{"id":17973,"date":"2012-03-19T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T12:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=17973"},"modified":"2012-03-17T13:48:58","modified_gmt":"2012-03-17T13:48:58","slug":"europe-bans-export-of-death-penalty-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/03\/europe-bans-export-of-death-penalty-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe Bans Export of Death Penalty Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The EU makes a bold move towards the abolition of executions everywhere. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In response to recommendations from a 2010 Amnesty International report, the European Commission has banned the export of drugs used for execution by lethal injection in the United States. \u201cThe decision today contributes to the wider EU efforts to abolish the death penalty worldwide,\u201d said Catherine Ashton, vice president of the commission, in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission added eight barbiturates to its list of goods subject to export control restrictions. Two of these, sodium thiopental and pentobarbital, are used in all the states that perform execution by lethal injection.<\/p>\n<p>The only U.S. manufacturer of sodium thiopental, Illinois-based Hospira, ceased production of the drug in January 2012.
