The U.S. is still aggressively tackling terrorism, Costs of War data shows \u2014 perhaps in farther reaches of the globe than many Americans realize.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

26 Feb 2021 – <\/em>Nearly 20 months after the Sept. 11 attacks, President George W. Bush stood on an aircraft carrier under a giant \u201cMission Accomplished\u201d banner and declared \u201cmajor combat operations in Iraq have ended.\u201d Nearly 18 years later, the U.S. is still entangled in military action in the Middle East and beyond.<\/p>\n

After the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq following 9\/11, much of the U.S. military activity has been focused on counterterrorism efforts, either in direct combat, through drone attacks, border patrols, intelligence gathering\u00a0or training other nations’ security forces.<\/p>\n

These globe-spanning operations have cost the U.S. in blood and treasure and had a massive impact on populations around the world. Newer nonmilitary threats from climate change to cyberattacks raise questions about the utility of holding on to hundreds of foreign bases<\/a> and deploying tens of thousands of troops overseas.<\/p>\n

The US\u00a0conducted counterterrorism operations in 85 countries from 2018-2020<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Though Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria were once top of mind for the American public, the footprint has been much larger \u2014 and more recent \u2014 for the American military.\u00a0New data from researcher Stephanie Savell for the Costs of War project<\/a> at Brown University’s Watson Institute shows that over the last three years the U.S. has been active in at least 85 countries.<\/p>\n
