{"id":180792,"date":"2021-03-15T12:01:26","date_gmt":"2021-03-15T12:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=180792"},"modified":"2021-03-14T08:25:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-14T08:25:02","slug":"china-and-russia-to-build-lunar-space-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2021\/03\/china-and-russia-to-build-lunar-space-station\/","title":{"rendered":"China and Russia to Build Lunar Space Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/moon.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-180793\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/moon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/moon.jpg 976w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/moon-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/moon-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">10 Mar 2021 &#8211; <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">China and Russia have announced plans to build a lunar space station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Russian space agency Roscosmos says it has signed an agreement with China\u2019s National Space Administration to develop research facilities on the surface of the moon, in orbit or both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">A statement from both countries\u2019 space agencies says it will be available for use by other nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">It comes as Russia prepares to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its first-ever manned space flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">The International Scientific Lunar Station will carry out a wide range of scientific research including exploration and utilisation of the moon, a statement from both agencies said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">\u201cChina and Russia will use their accumulated experience in space science, research and development and use of space equipment and space technology to jointly develop a road map for the construction of an international lunar scientific research station,\u201d the statement (in Mandarin) said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">It added that both Russia and China will collaborate in the planning, design, development and operation of the research station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Chen Lan, an analyst who specialises in China\u2019s space programme, told AFP news agency that the project was a \u201cbig deal\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">\u201cThis will be the largest international space cooperation project for China, so it\u2019s significant,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">China is a relatively late bloomer when it comes to the world of space exploration but last December its Chang\u2019e-5 probe successfully brought back rock and \u201csoil\u201d it picked up from the moon. At the time it was seen as another demonstration of the country\u2019s increasing capability in space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Russia, which pioneered space exploration, has been eclipsed by China and the United States in recent years. Last year it lost its monopoly on taking astronauts to the International Space station following SpaceX\u2019s successful launch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">The US has announced plans to return to the moon by 2024.
