{"id":182027,"date":"2021-04-05T12:00:43","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T11:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=182027"},"modified":"2021-03-31T07:44:09","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T06:44:09","slug":"canada-does-about-face-on-astrazeneca-vaccine-citing-blood-clot-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2021\/04\/canada-does-about-face-on-astrazeneca-vaccine-citing-blood-clot-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Does About Face on AstraZeneca Vaccine, Citing Blood Clot Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p class=\"post-excerpt\"><em>After previously defending AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID vaccine, Canadian health officials on Monday\u00a0 [29 Mar] suspended its use in people 55 and under, pending outcome of a detailed risk-benefit analysis.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/canada-astrazeneca-blood-clots-covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-182028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/canada-astrazeneca-blood-clots-covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/canada-astrazeneca-blood-clots-covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/canada-astrazeneca-blood-clots-covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/canada-astrazeneca-blood-clots-covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1-768x400.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>30 Mar 2021 &#8211; <\/em>Canadian health officials yesterday suspended use of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/who-approves-astrazeneca-vaccine-emergency-use\/\" >Oxford-AstraZeneca<\/a> COVID vaccine for people under age 55 following concerns the vaccine might be linked to rare blood clots, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/world\/articles\/2021-03-29\/canadian-panel-recommends-astrazeneca-pause-for-under-55\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p>\u201cThere is substantial uncertainty about the benefit of providing AstraZeneca <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/covid-19-vaccine-news\/\" >COVID-19 vaccines<\/a> to adults under 55 given the potential risks,\u201d said Dr. Shelley Deeks, vice chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/canadian-panel-recommends-astrazeneca-pause-55-76751765\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a>, Deeks said the committee updated its recommendations amid new data from Europe suggesting the risk of blood clots is now potentially one in 100,000 \u2014 much higher than the one-in-1-million risk stated before.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the patients in Europe who developed a rare blood clot after vaccination with AstraZeneca were women under age 55, and the fatality rate among those who developed clots is as high as 40%.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/canada\/canadian-press-newsalert-p-e-i-suspends-use-of-astrazeneca-vaccine-among-young\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Canadian Press<\/a>, Health Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/canada\/canadian-press-newsalert-p-e-i-suspends-use-of-astrazeneca-vaccine-among-young\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demanded<\/a> AstraZeneca conduct a detailed study on the risks and benefits of its COVID vaccine across multiple age groups. The Advisory committee recommended the shot be suspended for younger groups pending the outcome of that review.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Joss Reimer of Manitoba\u2019s Vaccine Implementation Task Force said despite the European Medicine Agency\u2019s (EMA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/eu-astrazeneca-vaccine-blood-clots-still-safe\/\" >findings<\/a> that there was no increased risk of blood clots overall related to AstraZeneca in Europe, a rare but very serious side effect has been seen primarily in young women in Europe between four and 20 days after getting the shot, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/canadian-panel-recommends-astrazeneca-pause-55-76751765\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we still believe the benefits for all ages outweigh the risks I\u2019m not comfortable with probably. I want to see more data coming out of Europe so I know exactly what this risk-benefit analysis is,\u201d Reimer said.<\/p>\n<p>On March 24, Health Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/news\/2021\/03\/health-canada-issues-label-change-and-guidance-on-the-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated<\/a> the product information for AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID vaccines to warn of the risk of rare blood clots associated with low levels of blood platelets following vaccinations \u2014 marking a stark change from Canada\u2019s former position.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the product information update, on March 15, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/trudeau-offers-reassurance-on-astrazeneca-safety-as-european-countries-suspend-use-1.5347727?cache=yes%3FclipId%3D104070%2F5-things-to-know-for-friday-september-6-2019-1.4580670\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered reassurances<\/a> to Canadians on the safety of AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine, even as numerous European countries paused the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth Canada regulators are constantly analyzing all the available information about vaccines and have guaranteed those approved in Canada are safe for use,\u201d Trudeau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/trudeau-offers-reassurance-on-astrazeneca-safety-as-european-countries-suspend-use-1.5347727?cache=yes%3FclipId%3D104070%2F5-things-to-know-for-friday-september-6-2019-1.4580670\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told reporters<\/a>. \u201cHealth Canada and our experts and scientists have spent an awful lot of time making sure every vaccine approved in Canada is both safe and effective. Therefore, the very best vaccine for you to take is the first one that is offered to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By March 16, more than 20 countries had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/20-countries-suspend-astrazeneca-vaccine\/\" >suspended use<\/a> of AstraZeneca\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/covid-19-vaccine-news\/\" >COVID vaccine<\/a> over concerns the vaccine was triggering rare blood clot disorders, some resulting in death, in healthy people who received the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>On March 18, EU regulators <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/eu-astrazeneca-vaccine-blood-clots-still-safe\/\" >determined<\/a> the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine \u201cmay be associated with very rare cases of blood clots, \u201dbut the vaccine is \u201csafe and effective\u201d and recommended that countries continue to use it. Canada said the vaccine was safe but was adding a warning to the label about rare blood clots, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-astrazeneca-usa\/astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-76-effective-in-updated-u-s-trial-results-idUSKBN2BH03H\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following that ruling, Health Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/news\/2021\/03\/health-canada-confirms-that-the-benefits-of-the-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-continue-to-outweigh-the-risks-for-use-in-canada.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweighed the risk of blood clots, that it was safe and effective per the EMA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-regulator-confirms-that-people-should-continue-to-receive-the-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency<\/a>, and encouraged Canadians to get immunized with any of the COVID vaccines authorized in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, there had been only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/news\/2021\/03\/health-canada-confirms-that-the-benefits-of-the-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-continue-to-outweigh-the-risks-for-use-in-canada.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one report<\/a> (as of March 18) in Canada of a stroke occurring in an individual following vaccination with COVISHIELD (the version of the AstraZeneca vaccine currently being distributed in Canada), health officials stood by the vaccine. That reported case was assessed by regulators and determined not to be related to the vaccine. However, only those 60 and above \u2014 the non-risk age group for rare blood clots\u2014 had received an <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/canadian-panel-recommends-astrazeneca-pause-55-76751765\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AstraZeneca vaccine<\/a> in the country\u2019s most populous province of Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Although many European countries resumed using the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/astrazeneca-vaccine-less-effective-no-safety-concerns\/\" >AstraZeneca vaccine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-norway\/norway-keeps-astrazeneca-vaccine-on-hold-for-another-three-weeks-idUSKBN2BI10B\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norway<\/a> has not lifted its restrictions on the vaccine\u2019s use after two independent research teams in Norway and Germany <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/link-astrazeneca-vaccine-blood-clots\/\" >identified antibodies<\/a> associated with the immune response that caused the type of blood clots experienced by some people who received the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>And today, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/germany-astrazeneca-blood-clots-deaths\/\" >The Defender reported<\/a>, Germany hit pause on the AstraZeneca vaccine for people under 60 following reports in that country of 31 blood clots and nine deaths in people who got the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-25\/astra-suspension-extended-in-denmark-amid-blood-clot-concerns\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Thursday it was extending its suspension of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/AZN:LN\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AstraZeneca\u2019s <\/a>vaccine for another three weeks, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-25\/astra-suspension-extended-in-denmark-amid-blood-clot-concerns\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a73d6bfd-662e-4055-b9b2-f2bf5d1d670d\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a> have cleared the vaccine for use in those over 65, but maintain suspension for all other age groups. France has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.fr\/20210319\/france-resumes-astrazeneca-vaccination-but-recommends-it-for-over-55s-only\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authorized<\/a> AstraZeneca only for those over age 55.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/who-approves-astrazeneca-vaccine-emergency-use\/\" >AstraZeneca shot<\/a> has been authorized in more than 70 countries and is the pillar of a Bill Gates\u2019 United Nations-backed project known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/covax-covid-19-vaccine-11613577473\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVAX<\/a> which aims to get COVID vaccines to poorer countries.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/canadian-panel-recommends-astrazeneca-pause-for-under-55\/2021\/03\/29\/cdf3f370-90b6-11eb-aadc-af78701a30ca_story.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>, the vaccine\u2019s rollout has been troubled by inconsistent study reports about its effectiveness, and more recently the scare about clots that had many countries temporarily pause inoculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis vaccine has had all the ups and downs. It looks like a rollercoaster,\u201d said Dr Caroline Quach-Thanh, chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, when asked if the latest news will lead to further vaccine hesitancy in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/astrazeneca-vaccine-less-effective-no-safety-concerns\/\" >AstraZeneca<\/a> was accused by U.S. health agencies and federal scientists of misrepresenting efficacy data of its American clinical trial and failing to identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazeneca.com\/content\/astraz\/media-centre\/press-releases\/2021\/azd1222-us-phase-iii-primary-analysis-confirms-safety-and-efficacy.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safety concerns<\/a> related to the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Although AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID vaccine is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/covid19-industry\/drugs-vaccines-treatments\/vaccines.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved vaccines<\/a> authorized for use in Canada, it has not yet received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework\/emergency-use-authorization\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emergency Use Authorization<\/a> (EUA) in the U.S. The company <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/22\/business\/astrazeneca-covid-vaccine.html\" >plans to apply<\/a> for EUA in the upcoming weeks.
