People seek truth, nonviolence and justice
\nOne person imbibing these qualities was Gandhi
\nA person born in a small Gujarati village
\nBecame a symbol of these values world over<\/p>\n

Protests against injustice was the hallmark of Gandhi
\nStruggled for a small commodity that we all need\u00a0\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Salt<\/em>
\nWhat a struggle it was\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 covering a distance of 400 km
\nA march\u00a0\u00a0that started from\u00a0\u00a0Sabarmati<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0and ended in\u00a0Dandi<\/em><\/p>\n

Why\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0salt<\/em>\u2014 because the British Empire in India imposed a tax
\nThe journey started on 12 March 1930, reaching Dandi on 6 April
\nGandhi and his fellow marchers tried to pick salt from the ocean
\nWhat they picked were baton blows by the British police<\/p>\n

Gandhi tried picking salt, he was hit and fell down
\nAnother man tried picking salt, was blown down
\nAs one man fell, another took his place
\nOne by one the sea was littered by men hit by baton<\/p>\n

The\u00a0\u00a0Salt Satyagraha\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0drew attention to the unjust\u00a0\u00a0British Rule
\nIt was followed by many demonstrations for an independent nation
\nGandhi was jailed but that added to the independence struggle
\nA struggle that continued till 1947 when India became a free nation<\/p>\n

Peaceful demonstrations or\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Satyagraha \u00a0in\u00a0<\/em>Dandi
\nFor independence and justice in countries of Asia, Africa
\nStruggles that produced\u00a0Ho Chi Minh<\/em>\u00a0 and \u00a0Nelson Mandela<\/em>
\nMartin Luther King Jr\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0in America, all inspired by Gandhi<\/p>\n

The <\/em>Salt March, also known as the <\/em>Salt Satyagraha, Dandi March and the<\/em> Dandi Satyagraha, was an act of nonviolent<\/a> civil disobedience<\/a> in colonial India led by Mahatma Gandhi<\/a>. The twenty four-day march lasted from 12 Mar to 6 Apr 1930 as a direct action campaign.
