Dear Friends,<\/p>\n

Although the world\u2019s media have given it scant attention, it is important for all of us to follow the nonviolent mass resistance movement against the nuclear power plant construction in Koodankulam village, Tamil Nadu, India. The grass roots struggle started in the 1980s. \u00a0It has built up steadily into a nonviolent mass action, with about 10,000 people resisting the imposition of the plant in their backyard.<\/p>\n

The Fukushima disaster in Japan, Mar 2011, provides unambiguous testimony of the dangers associated with nuclear power. But the struggle in Tamil Nadu is about something even greater than the collapse of a technological dream. It is about the collapse of democracy in a country that has long claimed to be the world\u2019s largest democracy. The violence exercised against the nonviolent protestors by Indian government officials tells us that this dream has collapsed as well. Gandhi weeps.<\/p>\n
