RIP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Haunani-Kay-Trask-300x157-1.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-188427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Haunani-Kay-Trask-300x157-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Haunani-Kay Trask, Hawaiian scholar and activist, died in the morning of 3 Jul 2021 on Oahu, Honolulu. She was 71. Tenured as a professor for more than 30 years at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Trask worked in co-founding the contemporary field of Hawaiian Studies.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">We send our sympathy and aloha to the Trask \u02bbohana, Ka L\u0101hui Hawai\u02bbi, the Kamakak\u016bokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, and the many other organizations and people that she inspired.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Trask wrote two poetry books \u2014 <em>Light in the Crevice Never Seen<\/em> and <em>Night is a Sharkskin Drum<\/em> \u2014 and a collection of politically provocative essays, <em>From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawaii<\/em>. She also co-wrote and co-produced the award-winning documentary <em>Act of War: The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation<\/em>, which premiered in 1994.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Haunani-Kay Delivers Powerful Speech at the University of Hawaii in 1991<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ltaYNSyhodo<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">And here is an excerpt of Haunani-Kay Trask\u2019s prophetic testimony in Hilo, April 20, 1978 at an EIS hearing on the Navy\u02bbs use of Kaho\u02bbolawe for target practice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhy does the military need Kaho\u02bbolawe? Please try and consider this as a broader issue. If the military loses Kaho\u02bbolawe, the struggle is gonna go on forever. They\u2019re gonna lose Makua valley. They\u2019re gonna lose Pohakuloa, they\u2019re gonna lose Kaneohe Marine Air base. This is the beginning of the struggle. This is not the end. That\u2019s why they need Kaho\u2019olawe\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTry and think about the fact that if the military loses Kaho\u02bbolawe, a precedent will be set for getting back all the military lands. 26% of O\u02bbahu is owned by the military. That\u2019s what the argument is. That\u2019s what the fight is. That\u2019s what we\u02bbre talking about. We\u2019re not talking about all this other stuff. Were talking about who\u02bbs going to get the land back, who it belongs to. It doesn\u2019t belong to the Navy. It doesn\u2019t belong to the Americans\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen you listen to all the testimony tonight, remember this is the main thing: We are talking about totally opposed cultural values. They\u2019re interested in war, they\u02bbre interested in destruction.
