{"id":189137,"date":"2021-07-19T12:00:37","date_gmt":"2021-07-19T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=189137"},"modified":"2025-01-10T15:08:37","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T15:08:37","slug":"germany-establishes-new-military-space-command","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2021\/07\/germany-establishes-new-military-space-command\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany Establishes New Military Space Command"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_189138\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/earth-from-space-europe.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189138\" class=\"wp-image-189138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/earth-from-space-europe-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/earth-from-space-europe-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/earth-from-space-europe-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/earth-from-space-europe-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/earth-from-space-europe.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-189138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(DKosig\/Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><em>13 Jul 2021 &#8211; <\/em>The German military has announced the creation of a separate command dedicated to space, becoming the latest of a handful of nations prioritizing more resources and missions among the stars.<\/p>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The Ministry of Defence introduced the new space command in a July 13 ceremony at the German Space Situational Awareness Centre in Uedem, located in the country\u2019s North Rhine-Westphalia region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer provided a keynote speech for the event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The military is \u201cresponding to the increasing significance of space for our state\u2019s ability to function, the prosperity of our population, and the increasing dependency of the armed forces on space-supported data, services and products,\u201d the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Since 2009, the German Air Force, or Luftwaffe, has used the center to monitor space assets, order maneuvering of systems and recommend evasion routes to commercial satellite operators, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlr.de\/rd\/en\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-8201\/14054_read-35657\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the German Aerospace Center<\/a>. In fall 2020, the Air and Space Operations Center, or ASOC, was inaugurated there in response to NATO\u2019s declaration of space as a new operational domain at the alliance\u2019s 2019 meeting in London, England.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">As with NATO, the emphasis for ASOC was more on space as a defensive domain, with the aim of protecting German systems and further investing in space situational awareness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/publication\/german-armed-forces-approaching-outer-space\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the German Institute for International and Security Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Berlin is not alone in its efforts to create a separate military space entity. The U.S. Space Force was established in late 2019 as a separate military branch under the Department of the Air Force, and now boasts a separate budget line from the Air Force and its own representation on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with Chief of Space Operations Gen. Jay Raymond. While initial Space Force personnel were transferred in from space-related units within the Air Force, the nascent service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/06\/30\/nearly-4000-soldiers-sailors-and-marines-applied-to-join-the-space-force-here-are-the-50-who-made-it\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will soon welcome<\/a> its first \u2014 and soon to be former \u2014 Marines, soldiers and sailors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The U.S. officially reestablished its Space Command on Aug. 29, 2019, which is technically the second iteration of an American space command. Established in 1985, the first Space Command was ultimately merged into U.S. Strategic Command in 2002 as part of the military reorganization following the Sept. 11 attacks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container signup newsletter\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-subscribe\">\n<form id=\"newsletterForm\" action=\"https:\/\/link.defensenews.com\/s\/Editorial+-+Military+Space+Report\" method=\"POST\" name=\"emailsignup\" target=\"subscribeFrame\"><\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">In fall 2020, France <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/09\/15\/french-air-force-changes-name-as-it-looks-to-the-stars\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renamed<\/a> its Air Force to become the Air and Space Force, after creating its new space command Commandement de l\u2019espace in 2019. The United Kingdom also established a separate space command in spring 2021 as a joint command staffed with personnel from the British Army, the Royal Navy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/05\/14\/british-royal-air-force-invests-in-space-capabilities\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Air Force<\/a> and the civil service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nato-priorities\/2021\/06\/14\/as-nato-rolls-out-2030-agenda-will-it-find-its-place-in-the-space-race\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NATO has named space<\/a> as one of its top seven priorities for emerging and disruptive technologies, or EDT.
