{"id":191419,"date":"2021-08-16T12:00:37","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=191419"},"modified":"2025-01-10T15:08:35","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T15:08:35","slug":"industrial-meat-producers-use-same-playbook-as-big-oil-pesticide-industry-to-deceive-consumers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2021\/08\/industrial-meat-producers-use-same-playbook-as-big-oil-pesticide-industry-to-deceive-consumers\/","title":{"rendered":"Industrial Meat Producers Use Same Playbook as Big Oil, Pesticide Industry to Deceive Consumers"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p class=\"post-excerpt\"><em>DeSmog analyzed the public relations and lobbying efforts of industrial meat producers and found the industry is stepping up its game in an effort to cast itself in a climate-friendly light.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_191423\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ2.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191423\" class=\"wp-image-191423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ2.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ2-300x241.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ2-768x617.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-191423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Peter Reynolds<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>23 Jul 2021 &#8211; <\/em>A new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2021\/08\/investigation-how-the-meat-industry-is-climate-washing-its-polluting-business-model\/\" > investigation by DeSmog<\/a> reveals how the global meat industry is using a playbook similar to that of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/big-energy\" >Big Oil<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/big-chemical\" >pesticide companies<\/a> to sway public opinion about the true environmental costs of industrially produced meat.<\/p>\n<p>DeSmog analyzed the public relations and lobbying efforts of the meat industry\u2019s key players \u2014 JBS, Tyson Foods, Vion and Danish Crown \u2014 reviewing hundreds of documents and statements by companies and trade associations.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation found that through \u201cclimate-friendly\u201d messaging, the meat industry is portraying itself as a \u201cclimate leader\u201d in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Downplaying the impact of livestock farming on the climate.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Casting doubt on the efficacy of alternatives to meat to combat climate change.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Promoting the health benefits of meat while overlooking the industry\u2019s environmental footprint.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Exaggerating the potential of agricultural innovations to reduce the livestock industry\u2019s ecological impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>DeSmog said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cMeat producers casting themselves in an environmentally friendly light isn\u2019t a new phenomenon. But increased public pressure for companies to act in a climate-conscious way has caused a step-change in the industry\u2019s PR efforts.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Demand for meat soars as the planet heats up\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meat production has <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/meat-production\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than quadrupled<\/a> in the last 60 years. And according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, demand is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/sites\/29248f46-en\/index.html?itemId=\/content\/component\/29248f46-en#chapter-d1e18737\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expected<\/a> to rise as incomes climb in developing nations.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a trend DeSmog says \u201csets the world on a collision course with the climate targets laid out in the Paris Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSmog reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cA <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/370\/6517\/705\" >study<\/a> published in Science last year found that even if emissions from fossil fuels ceased right away, projected eating habits would make it impossible to keep global average temperature rises to 1.5C.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-191420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/meat-industry-cattle-cows-environ-768x400.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The looming threat of climate change, coupled with the rising demand for climate action, has the meat industry terrified of regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Kristine Clement, campaign lead of agriculture and forests at Greenpeace Denmark, told DeSmog while the meat industry is hellbent on expanding, it\u2019s also afraid \u201cpoliticians will stand up and say, \u2018No, we can\u2019t continue this endless production of meat.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the industrial meat industry has ramped up its efforts, said DeSmog, to underreport emissions, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/industrial-agriculture-report-exposes-large-scale-deception\/\" >perpetuate the myth<\/a> that industrial meat is needed to feed the world and dismiss dietary changes (such as eating less meat).<\/p>\n<p>DeSmog said the meat industry is also focusing more on innovations, such as manure management and methane-capture technologies, that the industry says will drastically lower emissions.<\/p>\n<p>According to DeSmog:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSo far, the meat industry seems to be having considerable success with its climate-friendly communications strategy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis could be, in part, because it is benefitting from a general lack of media scrutiny.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>CLICK HERE<\/strong><strong> to read the full report on <\/strong><\/em><strong>TMS<\/strong><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/meat-industry-pr-campaign-deceive-consumers-climate-impact\/?utm_source=salsa&amp;eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=10a678ed-9e29-415f-a4ee-34bff075f11b\" >Go to Original &#8211;
