{"id":19260,"date":"2012-05-28T12:00:52","date_gmt":"2012-05-28T11:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=19260"},"modified":"2012-05-25T16:51:03","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T15:51:03","slug":"french-ban-of-monsanto-gm-maize-rejected-by-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/05\/french-ban-of-monsanto-gm-maize-rejected-by-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"French Ban of Monsanto GM Maize Rejected By EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The EU&#8217;s food safety body ruled there is &#8216;no specific scientific evidence&#8217; that the insect-resistant strain is harmful to health or the environment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s attempt to ban the planting of a Monsanto strain of genetically modified maize was rejected by the EU&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/food\" title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on Food\" >food<\/a> safety body on Monday [21 May 2012].<\/p>\n<p>In response to scientific evidence submitted by France backing its bid to ban the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/gm\" title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on GM\" >GM<\/a> maize, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/fr\/efsajournal\/pub\/2705.htm\" title=\"\" >European Food Safety Authority ruled that<\/a> &#8220;there is no specific scientific evidence, in terms of risk to human and animal health or the environment&#8221; to support a ban.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, France banned the the strain MON 810 following public protests against the GM maize, but this was overturned by a French court in 2011. However, in March <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5g35IMv82EiHUZTEBI7Yadp2y74CA\" title=\"\" >the French government reinstated the ban<\/a>, with the then agricultural minister Bruno Le Maire saying the move was &#8220;to protect the environment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Monsanto-owned strain, marketed as YieldGard by the US company, is an insect-resistant strain of maize that was introduced in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>In its verdict on Monday, Efsa said that much of the scientific evidence in France&#8217;s new submission in January had already been included in a previous 2008 submission to the agency, which concluded at the time &#8220;that no specific scientific evidence, in terms of risk to human and animal health or the environment, was provided that would justify the invocation of a safeguard clause [ban]&#8221;. It added that no new scientific work had been submitted that suggested there was risk to the environment, either.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/europe-news\" title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on Europe\" >Europe<\/a>&#8216;s health commissioner, John Dalli, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/articles\/eu_food_agency_rejects_france_ban_on_monsantos_yieldguard_gm_maize_27415.aspx?SectionID=2\" title=\"\" >told the AFP news agency<\/a> that the EU executive &#8220;will consider how to follow up on this ruling, though technically we could ask France to raise its ban [on the Monsanto strain]&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling follows a renewed focus on GM food in the UK, with researchers <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uk\/2012\/may\/01\/anti-gm-activists-wheat-rothamsted\" title=\"\" >making a plea to anti-GM activists not to rip up a test site of GM wheat<\/a>.
