It analysed the impact that Indigenous resistance had on proposed fossil fuel projects in the US and Canada, highlighting 20 that have been cancelled or delayed following protests from Native American groups.<\/p>\n<p>Combined, the shelved projects would have belched out the equivalent of 25 per cent of the US and Canada\u2019s annual emissions, the report\u2019s authors estimated.\u00a0Their findings are welcome news after it was revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-58508001\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a record number of environmental activists were killed in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndigenous communities resisting oil, gas, and coal projects across their territory are demonstrating true climate leadership,\u201d said Kyle Gracey of Oil Change International. \u201cRespecting and honouring the wisdom and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples is a key solution to the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/positive-news-logo.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-180266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/positive-news-logo-300x40.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/positive-news-logo-300x40.png 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/positive-news-logo.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">Generational divide over climate is a myth \u2013 study <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intro__paragraph pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>Older generations in the UK are just as worried about the climate crisis as younger people, and are equally willing to make sacrifices to protect the planet.<\/p>\n<p>So found a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/policy-institute\/assets\/who-cares-about-climate-change.pdf\" >study<\/a>, published this week, which debunks the myth that a generational war is playing out over the climate emergency. The research, by the Policy Institute at King\u2019s College London and New Scientist magazine, found that 68 per cent of baby boomers are willing to change their habits to save the environment, versus 70 per cent of generation Zs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many myths about the differences between generations \u2013 but none are more destructive than the claim that it\u2019s only the young who care about climate change,\u201d said Professor Bobby Duffy, director of the Policy Institute. \u201cIf we want a greener future, we need to act together, uniting the generations, rather than trying to drive an imagined wedge between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">A report suggested Britain is \u2018moving closer together\u2019 <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intro__paragraph pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>On the subject of shared values, another report this week concluded that people in Scotland, England and Wales are well aligned on many social issues, despite the politically fragile nature of the union and the divisive culture wars playing out in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening the NHS, reducing inequality, slashing emissions, improving pay and challenging racism are among the shared priorities for people living in the three nations, according to research by Our Scottish Future. The organisation was founded by the former UK prime minister, Gordon Brown, to make a positive case for the union.<\/p>\n<p>Brown said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ourscottishfuture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OSF-Scotland-Scotland-and-New-England-2021.pdf\" >the report<\/a> showed that the UK was \u201cmoving closer together, not further apart\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">California is set to launch a mental health hotline <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intro__paragraph pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>Californians experiencing a mental health crisis will soon be able to call a three-digit number for support, after the service secured funding last week.<\/p>\n<p>The 9-8-8 hotline is set to launch in July 2022, and will direct callers to a mental health response team. The $20m (\u00a314.5m) funding announced last week was less than some had hoped for, but was enough to get the service going.<\/p>\n<p>Darrell Steinberg, mayor of Sacramento, said the money was \u201ca first step towards creating an easier to access system for mental health care\u201d. He added: \u201cOur jails and emergency rooms can no longer be our primary treatment for people in crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">The end of coal is nigh, claimed a report <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intro__paragraph pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>Three-quarters of the world\u2019s planned coal-fired power plants have been scrapped since the 2015 Paris agreement, according to a report, whose authors suggest the end is nigh for coal.<\/p>\n<p>The climate groups behind <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/guest-post-how-worlds-coal-power-pipeline-has-shrunk-by-three-quarters\" >the report<\/a> \u2013 E3G, Global Energy Monitor and Ember \u2013 said the collapse in coal brings the world \u201ccloser to a pathway consistent with international climate goals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u2019s authors said that 44 nations have committed to eliminating the fossil fuel, with a further 33 in a position to make a formal \u201cno new coal\u201d pledge. Just six nations, they added, are responsible for four-fifths of proposed coal plants: China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Turkey and Bangladesh. Most have plans to reduce coal burning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">More edible playgrounds were announced for Wales <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intro__paragraph pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>More school children in Wales are to get access to edible playgrounds, it was announced this week.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental charity Trees For Cities said that it has started work on raised beds, greenhouses and wormeries for 10 schools in Cardiff, which is striving to become a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childfriendlycities.org\" >UNICEF Child Friendly City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative will allow pupils to benefit from greener spaces in their playgrounds, access more outdoor lessons and understand in greater depth about where their food comes from,\u201d said David Elliott, the chief executive of Trees For Cities.<\/p>\n<p>The charity has already installed edible gardens at 180 schools in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">UK cargo bike-sharing scheme prepared to launch<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intro__paragraph pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>Work has begun on the UK\u2019s first on-demand, cargo bike-sharing scheme, which is scheduled to launch in London this month.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the bikes will be available for public hire in Hackney.
