{"id":20233,"date":"2012-07-16T12:00:37","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=20233"},"modified":"2012-07-14T17:00:05","modified_gmt":"2012-07-14T16:00:05","slug":"brazil-set-to-unleash-genetically-modified-mosquitoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/07\/brazil-set-to-unleash-genetically-modified-mosquitoes\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil Set to Unleash Genetically Modified Mosquitoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Oxitec continues &#8220;dangerously misguided&#8221; plan to combat dengue fever.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brazil is readying a plan to unleash large numbers of genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes in an effort to combat dengue fever, a plan that environmentalists have previously called &#8220;dangerously misguided.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxitec.com\/press-release-moscamed-prepares-next-phase-development-oxitecs-transgenic-mosquitoes-brazil\/\" >factory inaugurated Saturday<\/a> [7 Jul 2012], Moscamed will continue its two-year long project which already saw gm mosquitoes released in Bahia state last year.<\/p>\n<p>The plan uses Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), which renders the modified insects sterile, thereby theoretically reducing the number of mosquitoes in the wild when they&#8217;re released.<\/p>\n<p>The GM mosquito plan may have met with little resistance, as Oxitec says in a statement that Brazil has &#8220;a long history of open releases of genetically modified plants in agriculture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brazil is not the only place to receive Oxitec&#8217;s transgenic bugs. <em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2012-05-03\/mosquitoes-shoot-blanks-in-scientist-s-air-war-on-dengue.html\" >reports<\/a> that they&#8217;ve also been released in Malaysia, the Cayman Islands and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>When the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2012\/03\/15-6\" >Florida Keys announced a possible plan to release Oxitec&#8217;s genetically modified mosquitoes<\/a> in order to control the population of <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> in March, it was met with resistance from community members.\u00a0 Environmentalists called the the plan &#8220;dangerously misguided&#8221; and said that the company has hidden the fact that the genetically modified mosquitoes could have high survival rate in wild and is not, as Oxitec claims, environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot stress strongly enough how dangerously misguided this application is. Oxitec hopes to use the neighborhoods and precious ecosystem of the Keys as their private, for-profit laboratory.
