That\u2019s according to Human Rights Watch (HRW), which this week published its annual assessment of human rights around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/world-report\/2022\" >The report<\/a> noted that autocrats faced a significant backlash in 2021, with millions of people taking to the streets in countries like Brazil, Hungary and Uganda. It also highlighted the trend for opposition parties to form coalitions to challenge autocrats, citing the Czech Republic and Israel as places where this has succeeded. Similar alliances have been formed in Hungary and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/world-report\/2022\/autocrats-on-defensive-can-democrats-rise-to-occasion\" >In an essay<\/a> introducing the report, HRW director Kenneth Roth acknowledged increasing repression in countries like China, Russia and Turkey. However, he suggested this was not evidence of rising autocratic power, but \u201can act of desperation by dictatorial leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roth underscored the need for strong leadership in democratic nations (many of which have flirted with populism) to counterbalance autocrats. \u201cThe defence of human rights requires not only curbing autocratic repression, but also improving democratic leadership,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">Child marriage was banned in the Philippines <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>The Philippines has passed a law prohibiting child marriage, according to the news agency Agence France-Presse. Many readers will wonder what took it so long.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated one in six girls in the Philippines enter wedlock before they are 18. However, the new law will make it a criminal offence to marry or cohabit with anyone under 18. Those found guilty will face up to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state views child marriage as a practice constituting child abuse because it debases, degrades, and demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of children,\u201d states the new legislation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">Conservationists celebrated the birth of a gorilla <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>A lowland gorilla has been born in the Democratic Republic of Congo\u2019s Virunga national park, boosting the population there to seven.<\/p>\n<p>The birth is a win for conservationists, who have worked during violent political unrest to protect the great apes in Africa\u2019s oldest national park. Seventeen mountain gorillas \u2013 a relative of the lowland gorilla \u2013 were born in the park last year.<\/p>\n<p>While the latest birth is positive news, the critically-endangered mountain gorilla remains in peril with the global population reportedly declining by around five per cent annually.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">Olive oil reduces risk of fatal diseases \u2013 study <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>A spoonful of olive oil a day could be enough to keep the doctor away, according to a study out this week.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Harvard University evaluated the diets of 92,000 health workers over 30 years. They found that people who consumed more than 7g of olive oil per day had a 19 per cent lower chance of dying from cardiovascular diseases, compared to those who ate none.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, their risk of dying from cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer\u2019s, was 17 per cent and 29 per cent lower respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Marta Guasch-Ferr\u00e9, who led <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2021.10.041\" >the study<\/a>, said: \u201cClinicians should be counselling patients to replace certain fats, such as margarine and butter, with olive oil to improve their health.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">A study revealed the climate benefits of a veggie diet <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>One hundred billion tonnes of carbon dioxide could be removed from the air by the end of the century, if high-income countries adopt a plant-based diet.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-021-00431-5\" >a study<\/a> by researchers at Leiden University, Netherlands. They calculated that switching to a veggie diet would reduce agricultural emissions by 61 per cent, while rewilding grazing sites would actively remove 98bn tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2100.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a remarkable opportunity for climate mitigation,\u201d said the university\u2019s Paul Behrens. \u201cIt would also have massive benefits for water quality, biodiversity, air pollution\u00a0and access to nature, to name just a few.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<h3 class=\"half-and-half__content\"><span class=\"half-and-half__title h5\">Sticking with plant protein\u2026<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-and-half half-and-half--alternate margin--flex pb--medium\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half--item\">\n<div class=\"half-and-half__content\">\n<p>An invasive shrub that colonised Scotland could produce enough protein to feed millions of people, according to the University of Aberdeen.<\/p>\n<p>The invasive gorse bush has long been considered a pest in Scotland, where it is regularly cleared from landscapes.
