Recession breaks in
\ngrey bar charts in a row fall down
\nas do computer monitors, file cabinets and screams
\nfrom window of sky-high building
\nlike someone threw up after ugly reality;
\nit is half-clothed, desperate and hopeless
\nmoney is expensive
\nlives and bodies seem to lose value
\nclad in gas canisters
\ndriven by emptiness and desperation
\nrecession breaks in;
\nWomen in high heels tear-open handbags
\nfor flip-flops,
\nwhile men run out and hold emergency doors
\nroads are cleared, firemen ready
\nto fight out burning cries in waiting
\ncries of horror, cries to live, cries to escape
\ntime ticks
\nas news channels flash red,
\nunemployed gather round pub TV screens
\npolice telephone lines engaged,
\nunder-25s hold tight strings of hope,
\na generation embattled!
\nday after the bar charts,
\nyears after bankruptcy
\nrecession breaks in.
\nbut then there are rains after draught
\nfloods on cracked lands
\ncherry trees in wild
\nOlympic rings on street corners;
\nlife, not desperation and despair
\neventually bursts forth.
\nwatch out, this 11-year-old
\nbehind quiet glass wall
\nof an old Windsor restaurant
\nas he continues to wave to strangers
\nwith explosive smile,
\nbored as he may be
\nin company of his father,
\nwaves of hope, waves of belief, waves of future,
\ncalling out for others to join him in.
