{"id":203580,"date":"2022-01-24T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T12:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=203580"},"modified":"2022-01-24T06:19:18","modified_gmt":"2022-01-24T06:19:18","slug":"nomination-of-dr-edward-horgan-for-the-2022-nobel-peace-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2022\/01\/nomination-of-dr-edward-horgan-for-the-2022-nobel-peace-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Nomination of Dr. Edward Horgan for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Press Release<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>12 Jan 2022 &#8211; <em>Ms. Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate, has today nominated Dr. Edward Horgan for the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In her nomination letter to Nobel Committee in Oslo Maguire wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2018My reason for nominating Edward Horgan, for the Nobel Peace Prize is because of his courageous, inspiring work for peace and disarmament and the upholding of international law and rights.\u00a0 His commitment to defending human rights, especially the most basic human right, the right not to be killed in war and instead to reject violence, in order to find peaceful solutions to our conflicts.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Edward Horgan said on 20 Mar 2003 that the Irish government ended Irish neutrality by participating in the war against Iraq and by allowing into the country USA troops on their way to fight NATO\/USA wars in Middle East. It has been complicit in the death of thousands of children in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The monthly protests at Shannon Airport organized by Dr. Horgan and friends recall the names of Iraqi children killed by sanctions and\/or weapons wars, call to stop using Shannon for USA\/military purposes, and the replacement of violence and enmity by dialogue and disarmament.<\/p>\n<p>In his Nobel Will, Alfred Nobel requested that his award for Peace should be given to Champions of Peace, i.e., those who would work for disarmament, peace and fraternity amongst nations.\u00a0 Dr. Horgan, most certainly a man of Peace who has spent his life working for the safety of peoples, particularly children, is a worthy candidate and a much needed voice rejecting violence and war, not only in Ireland but in the world.<\/p>\n<p><em>_________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/peace-people-logo.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-71186 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/peace-people-logo-300x71.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"71\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/peace-people-logo-300x71.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/peace-people-logo-768x182.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/peace-people-logo-1024x242.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/peace-people-logo.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Peace People<em> began in 1976 as a protest movement against the ongoing violence in Northern Ireland. Its three founders were Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown. Over 100,000 people were involved in the initial movement and two of the founders, Mairead and Betty, received the Nobel Peace Prize for that year.
