{"id":204076,"date":"2022-01-31T12:00:27","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T12:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=204076"},"modified":"2022-01-27T04:18:39","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T04:18:39","slug":"germany-blocks-nato-partners-from-supplying-their-weapons-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2022\/01\/germany-blocks-nato-partners-from-supplying-their-weapons-to-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany Blocks NATO Partners from Supplying Their Weapons to Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>21 Jan 2022 &#8211; <\/em>It was very noticeable when this week British military flights delivering weapons to Ukraine <strong>deliberately avoided German airspace<\/strong> &#8211; so much so that Berlin issued a statement clarifying that the German government had not demanded this ahead of time, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ukdefencejournal.org.uk\/british-aircraft-avoid-germany-on-ukraine-weapon-supply-run\/\" >saying<\/a> it has &#8220;not denied access to its airspace as the UK did not submit a request, there has been no dispute between the UK and Germany on this issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a lead NATO country and close US ally, it&#8217;s become clear Berlin has sought to avoid unnecessarily provoking\u00a0Moscow, also as the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is soon to come online pending the significant hurdle of regulatory approval. This week it became evident that <strong>Germany will not directly export weapons to Ukraine<\/strong>, even as allies like the UK and US have begun to. This also has a lot to do with a long-standing arms export control policy which <strong>prevents German arms from going into geopolitical hot zones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After on Thursday the Biden administration authorized US-made arms to be &#8220;rushed delivered&#8221; via third party countries to Kiev in order to deter any possible &#8216;Russian aggression&#8217; &#8211; namely from the Baltic allies of\u00a0Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia &#8211; this raised the question of whether German would allow for the same indirect weapons transfers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/globemaster.jpg?itok=Ire5GhJh\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"293\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"2cccc1a5-ed50-4017-ae6e-0250d2e78aa7\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>File image: US Army<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Friday afternoon <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported that Berlin has given its definitive answer, sticking by a strict interpretation of its arms transfer policy: &#8220;Germany is blocking North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally Estonia from giving military support to Ukraine by <strong>refusing to issue permits for German-origin weapons to be exported to Kyiv<\/strong> as it braces for a\u00a0potential Russian invasion,&#8221; the report say.<\/p>\n<p>Further, according to the WSJ, the German government is now prohibiting other countries from sending German-produced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/germany-blocks-nato-ally-from-transferring-weapons-to-ukraine-11642790772\" >weapons to Ukraine<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Unlike the U.S., Britain, Poland and other allies, the German government has declined to export lethal weapons directly to Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the case of Estonia, a small country on Russia\u2019s northern border, <strong>Berlin is also refusing to allow a third country to send artillery to Ukraine because the weaponry originated in Germany<\/strong>, according to Estonian and German officials.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov confirmed German&#8217;s &#8220;hesitation&#8221; to deliver arms. This also as German government spokesman reaffirmed &#8220;The principle governing arms exports&#8221; which\u00a0&#8220;is always the same\u2014whether they come directly from Germany or from third countries\u2014and no permission has been issued at this stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These are flights from U.K. delivering weapons, not diplomats, to Ukraine.
