Along this stretch, the killings have already begun. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm dropcap \"><em>17 Mar 2022 &#8211; <\/em>First<b> <\/b>the road was cragged and cracked. Then it was a thick slop of mud. Then a swirl of red dust. But now, after we<b> <\/b>had traveled hundreds of miles through the densest of jungle, the highway was finally good \u2014 paved and smooth \u2014 and<b> <\/b>it was here that the driver stopped the truck.<\/p>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm \">There was an unmarked dirt road branching off from the highway. It cut into the jungle and led out of sight. Lucas Ferrante,<b> <\/b>the environmental scientist leading this journey, wanted to go down the road and see what \u2014 and who \u2014 was hidden behind the trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm \">\u201cThis is illegal deforestation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm \">The driver, who lives on the highway, told him it would be too dangerous<b> <\/b>to proceed. These rough-hewn side roads are often the work of armed criminal groups. The groups, which dominate this stretch of the forest, had unleashed a wave of fire and destruction that was transforming<b> <\/b>much of southern Amazonas state into smoldering pastureland. The way they solve problems is with violence. People disappear. Their bodies are never found. Our driver feared the trouble that following this road would bring.<\/p>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm \">Ferrante, who has spent years detailing the region\u2019s lawlessness in academic journals, understood the highway\u2019s dangers and uncertainties better than most. He had been threatened in anonymous calls and messages \u2014 then abducted in November 2020 and told to keep quiet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidebar-note-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"sidebar-note-inner\">\n<div class=\"sidebar-note\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"$red-50 bold font-xs\"><em><strong>The Amazon, Undone&#8211;A series revealing how crime, corruption and greed are speeding the destruction of the world\u2019s largest rainforest.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm \">Another researcher documenting the destruction received this text: \u201cYou\u2019re going to burn in the fire. It will be a barbecue. Message delivered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\" font--article-body font-copy color-gray-darkest pb-md mw-md ma-auto pr-sm pl-sm \">But Ferrante, 33, believed traveling here was worth the risk. He had come to see this highway,<b> <\/b>a reddish gash scarring a quilt of green, as one of the Amazon\u2019s last stands.
