{"id":208286,"date":"2022-04-04T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T11:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=208286"},"modified":"2025-01-10T15:08:13","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T15:08:13","slug":"corporate-profits-soar-to-record-2-8-trillion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2022\/04\/corporate-profits-soar-to-record-2-8-trillion\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate Profits Soar to Record $2.8 Trillion"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>31 Mar 2022 &#8211; <em>Federal data released yesterday shows U.S. corporate profits jumped 25% to record highs in 2021, even as COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the nation&#8217;s economy and CEOs bragged on corporate earnings calls about jacking up consumer prices. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_208288\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/corporate-profits-inflation-capitalism-inequality.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-208288\" class=\"wp-image-208288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/corporate-profits-inflation-capitalism-inequality.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/corporate-profits-inflation-capitalism-inequality.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/corporate-profits-inflation-capitalism-inequality-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/corporate-profits-inflation-capitalism-inequality-768x400.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-208288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Defender<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"headline__body prose node__body\">\n<p><strong>Federal data released Wednesday<\/strong> shows that U.S. corporate profits jumped 25% to record highs in 2021 even as the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the nation&#8217;s economy, disrupting <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/economy\/how-we-broke-the-supply-chain-intro\/\" >supply chains<\/a>, hammering <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/blog\/the-unequal-toll-of-covid-19-on-workers\/\" >low-wage workers<\/a>, and helping to push inflation to levels not seen in decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;Megacorporations are cashing in and getting richer\u2014and consumers are paying the price.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-03\/gdp4q21_3rd.pdf\" >According to<\/a> the Commerce Department&#8217;s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), domestic corporate profits adjusted for inventory valuation and capital consumption reached $2.8 trillion last year, up from $2.2 trillion in 2020\u2014the largest increase <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/u-s-corporate-profits-jump-25-in-2021-as-economy-rebounds-from-pandemic-11648644379?mod=dist_amp_social&amp;link=sfmw_tw&amp;redirect=amp\" >since 1976<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Employee compensation also increased in 2021, just not at the pace of corporate profits. Citing the new BEA data, <em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-30\/2021-was-best-year-for-u-s-corporation-profits-since-1950\" >reported<\/a> that &#8220;employee compensation rose 11%, but the so-called labor share of national income\u2014essentially, the portion that&#8217;s paid out as wages and salaries\u2014fell back to pre-pandemic levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That tends to undermine the argument that soaring labor costs are what&#8217;s driving the current surge in inflation, a case the Federal Reserve is starting to make as it accelerates interest-rate increases,&#8221; <em>Bloomberg<\/em> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay Owens, executive director at the Groundwork Collaborative, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/groundworkcollaborative.org\/news\/groundwork-reacts-to-bea-report-detailing-record-corporate-profits\/\" >argued<\/a> in a statement that the new profit figures show that corporate America is successfully weathering inflationary pressures across the economy by pushing higher costs onto consumers\u2014a tactic some CEOs have openly touted during <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiYz6m8-u_2AhXxlIkEHSpuARcQFnoECA4QAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fbig-companies-keep-bragging-to-investors-about-price-hikes-2021-11&amp;usg=AOvVaw0PA1iSOwGND-E150OJZobN\" >recent calls<\/a> with investors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;CEOs can&#8217;t stop bragging on corporate earnings calls about jacking up prices on consumers to keep their profits soaring\u2014and today&#8217;s annual profit data shows just how well their inflation strategy is working,&#8221; Owens said. &#8220;These megacorporations are cashing in and getting richer\u2014and consumers are paying the price.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The American Economic Liberties Project expressed a similar view on Twitter:<\/p>\n<p>A number of major U.S. corporations, from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-60252907\" >Amazon<\/a> to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/02\/02\/starbucks-profits-soar-31-its-raising-prices-anyway\" >Starbucks<\/a> to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/11\/24\/dollar-tree-ceo-who-made-over-10-million-last-year-blames-inflation-price-hike-125\" >Dollar Tree<\/a>, have announced in recent months that they&#8217;re moving to hike prices on consumers, often blaming the broader &#8220;inflationary environment.&#8221; Outgoing Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson\u2014who saw his compensation soar by 39% to $20.4 million in 2021\u2014said during his company&#8217;s fourth-quarter earnings call that impending price increases are aimed at mitigating &#8220;cost pressures including inflation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;Pathetically, large corporations are using the war in Ukraine and the pandemic as an excuse to raise prices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But recent survey data indicates that Americans aren&#8217;t buying the companies&#8217; justifications for higher costs.
