What was it that they thought to own?
\nDecades, centuries kept intent intact.
\nAnd still it calls us, stone by stone,
\nTo eke out vision from mere fact.<\/p>\n

Observatory, temple, some Cheops\u2019 whim,
\nOr shaman\u2019s riddle in which power hid?
\nTo appease the gods\u2014or find them?
\nThey worshiped trees; dancing, they understood.<\/p>\n

We are mute questioners beguiled,
\nToken pilgrims–properly impressed.
\nSomeone sees the pagan truth defiled.
\n\u201cThey look like Rothkos!\u201d someone can\u2019t resist.<\/p>\n

Their shadows stretch behind the level sun,
\nShuttered in bus windows, one by one.<\/p>\n
