{"id":20887,"date":"2012-08-20T12:26:31","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T11:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=20887"},"modified":"2013-05-30T13:18:45","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T12:18:45","slug":"statement-on-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/08\/statement-on-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Statement on Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ominous signs of impending war with Syria escalate.\u00a0 NATO holds a special meeting to respond to the downing of a Turkish fighter plane and issues threats of future action.\u00a0 The U.S. government is supplying arms and logistical support to Syrian militias.\u00a0 The media bombards us with arguments that support foreign intervention.<\/p>\n<p>These are the facts that impel us to oppose any military, economic, diplomatic, or covert intervention aimed at controlling the internal affairs of Syria or any other country:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sanctions harm the people of Syria causing food shortages, power outages, and block the distribution of goods.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. is directly involved in arming and training Syrian militias. Supplying arms to opposition militias in Syria contributes to the escalation of violence, the possibility of civil war and\/or direct foreign military intervention, and total destabilization.\u00a0 The people who always suffer the most are the people not engaged in the armed struggle.<\/li>\n<li>We see the results of \u2018humanitarian\u2019 U.S. wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan today, where the people, especially women and children, are worse off than before, with millions dead, injured, and\/or displaced, an infrastructure and economy in shambles, and there is no peace.\u00a0 A country that has a river of Iraqi and Afghan blood on its hands has no right to tell other countries what to do.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. government\u2019s goals in Syria are to gain dominance in a part of the world that holds the vast majority of the known oil reserves and to gain strategic advantage as it seeks to isolate and contain competitors like Russia and China.\u00a0 The U.S. has no interest in democracy or the humanitarian well-being of a country\u2019s peoples anywhere in the world, especially in areas where the U.S. has economic or strategic interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While activists may hold different views of Syria\u2019s internal political system, we must all agree that the U.S. government has no right to impose its will on other countries, especially those formerly colonized and exploited by the West.\u00a0 In all cases, we must support the right of nations to self-determination \u2013 that is to be able to decide on and resolve internal conflicts free from any foreign intervention.<\/p>\n<p><em>The United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) demands:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No U.S. or NATO intervention in the internal affairs of Syria!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No War!\u00a0 No Sanctions!\u00a0 No Intervention!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Self-determination for the Syrian people!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hands off Syria and Iran!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 End the Drone Wars!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We Need Jobs, Education and Healthcare, Not Endless War!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/nepajac.org\/syria.htm\" >Go to Original \u2013 nepajac.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ominous signs of impending war with Syria escalate.
