Despite several rounds of\u00a0negotiations over the past seven weeks, the\u00a0war continues to intensify. Russian President Vladimir Putin remains defiant and has indicated that the brutal military campaign will continue unabated. On Tuesday,\u00a0Putin\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/12\/world\/europe\/putin-donbas-war-russia.html\" >said<\/a> negotiations had hit a \u201cdead end\u201d and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russia-will-not-pause-military-operation-ukraine-peace-talks-2022-04-11\/\" >warned<\/a>\u00a0that Russia will not pause its military operations during future peace talks. U.S. President Joe Biden announced this week yet another <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/13\/politics\/us-weapons-ukraine-war\/index.html?utm_term=link&amp;utm_content=2022-04-14T17%3A15%3A00&amp;utm_source=twCNN&amp;utm_medium=social\" >allocation<\/a> of $800 million dollars in \u201cmore sophisticated and heavier-duty weaponry\u201d than previous transfers to the Ukrainian side. Meanwhile, NATO appears set to expand further, with both Finland and Sweden indicating they are actively considering joining the alliance. Germany and other European countries are publicly committing to buying and selling more weapons and spending more on defense. NATO is raising the prospect of expanding its permanent military presence in Europe, and Washington is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/04\/01\/russia-ukraine-proxy-war-washington-diplomacy\/\" >reasserting<\/a> its political dominance over Europe on security matters.<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\"200\">\n<p>On Sunday, in an interview on NBC, national security adviser Jake Sullivan cast the war not just as a defense of Ukraine but also an opportunity to deliver significant blows to the stability of the Russian state. \u201cAt the end of the day, what we want to see is a free and independent Ukraine, a weakened and isolated Russia, and a stronger, more unified, more determined West,\u201d he said. \u201cWe believe that all three of those objectives are in sight, can be accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-reactid=\"211\">\n<p>As Ukraine and its Western allies accuse Russian forces of heinous war crimes and crimes against humanity, including massacres of large numbers of civilians, Putin\u2019s government and media apparatus is waging an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/03\/02\/russian-tv-ukraine-war-conspiracy\/\" >all-out campaign<\/a> to denounce the allegations as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/03\/17\/russia-ukraine-bioweapons-misinformation\/\" >lies<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/04\/12\/bucha-massacre-russia-tv-fake-ukraine-war\/\" >fake news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has officially accused Putin of war crimes and suggested he should face a \u201cwar crime trial.\u201d Russia, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/08\/23\/samantha-power-icc-sudan\/\" >like the U.S.<\/a>, has steadfastly refused to ratify the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court, so it is unclear how or where the administration believes such a trial would take place.<\/p>\n<p>This week, renowned dissident and linguist Noam Chomsky joined me for a wide-ranging discussion on\u00a0Russia\u2019s invasion of\u00a0Ukraine, holding the powerful accountable, the role of media and propaganda in war, and what Chomsky believes is necessary to end the bloodshed in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8Jr0PCU4m7M<br \/>\n<em><strong>Avram Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist,<\/strong> historian, logician, social critic, and political activist.
