{"id":21216,"date":"2012-09-03T12:00:16","date_gmt":"2012-09-03T11:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=21216"},"modified":"2012-09-01T18:03:01","modified_gmt":"2012-09-01T17:03:01","slug":"appeal-for-the-international-community-to-act-urgently-to-end-burmese-government-repression-against-rohingya-muslims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/09\/appeal-for-the-international-community-to-act-urgently-to-end-burmese-government-repression-against-rohingya-muslims\/","title":{"rendered":"Appeal for the International Community to Act Urgently To End Burmese Government Repression against Rohingya Muslims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>29 August 2012 &#8211; Nobel peace laureate Mairead Maguire said today that \u2018the\u00a0 stateless Rohingyas of Burma have suffered from persecution and discrimination for decades and are now facing inter-communal violence that has evolved into large scale state-sponsored violence against them.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In July 2012 the Burma campaign, U.K. received the following report:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Burmese police, security forces and soldiers are raping, looting, torturing and arbitrarily killing Rohingya people;<\/li>\n<li>There have been mass arrests with Rohingya people kept in detention camps without trial, without food or medical services;<\/li>\n<li>Around 100,000 internally displaced persons are in various locations, the vast majority without receiving proper assistance because they are ethnic Rohingya.\u00a0 Aid is mostly being blocked by the government; where allowed, Rohingya people have been excluded;<\/li>\n<li>Thousands of people fled to Bangladesh where they are getting no aid or protection, while thousands more have been turned back, literally at gunpoint, in violation of international law;<\/li>\n<li>Local authorities are refusing to allow ethnic Rohingyas back to some villages, shops and homes in a policy that appears designed to \u2018cleanse\u2019 these areas of them;<\/li>\n<li>The president of Burma has proposed a policy that amounts to ethnic cleansing asking the United Nations to arrange for Rohingya people to be removed from Burma and sent to third countries;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maguire said, <em>\u2018The UN and international community have a moral and\u00a0 legal responsibility to\u00a0 act now and step up\u00a0 diplomatic and nonviolent methods\u00a0\u00a0 to stop the persecution and suffering of the Rohingya people and to end the\u00a0 Burmese government-led abuse of human rights and repression against the Rohingyas.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>_____________________<\/p>\n<p><em>Mairead Corrigan Maguire is a member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment.
