Vis\u00e3o &#8211; Sapo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>9 Jul 2022 &#8211; <\/em>Angolans eulogized former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos who died yesterday in Spain as a patriot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content__text article-content__left-column js-responsive-iframes-container\">\n<p>Angolan President Joao Lourenco, who is seeking re-election in August, said the country had suffered a &#8220;big loss&#8221;. He declared five days of national mourning, starting Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is very sad news&#8230; He has done a lot for the country,&#8221; said Luanda resident Santos Camuenho, a 40-year-old mason.<\/p>\n<p>Dos Santos was admitted to a hospital in Spain and placed in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest on June 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-14\">Born on Aug. 28, 1942 to immigrant parents from the archipelago of S\u00e3o Tome, dos Santos was raised in the poor Luanda neighbourhood of Sambizanga. His father was a builder, his mother a maid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Giant tree has fallen&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Namibia&#8217;s President Hage Geingob called dos Santos an &#8220;outstanding revolutionary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another giant tree has fallen,&#8221; Geingob said.<\/p>\n<p>Portugal&#8217;s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa described him as a &#8220;decisive protagonist&#8221; in the relations with Angola&#8217;s former colonial power.<\/p>\n<p>Former Portuguese prime minister and ex-head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso recalled a leader of exceptional intelligence, who was able to guarantee Angolan national unity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For much of his time at the head of his MPLA party, dos Santos fought a civil war.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict was a Cold War hotspot, with dos Santos receiving Soviet and Cuban backing while UNITA rebels had Washington and apartheid South Africa on their side.<\/p>\n<p>When the 27-year conflict ended in 2002, dos Santos led Angola away from hardline Marxism and fostered a post-war oil boom and foreign investment surge that transformed central Luanda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My heart is bleeding,&#8221; Nsimba Adao, a 39-year-old street vendor in Luanda, told AFP. &#8220;He brought us peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/07\/09\/angola-mourns-ex-president-dos-santos\/\/\" >Go to Original &#8211; africanews.com<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>9 Jul 2022 &#8211; Angolans eulogized former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos who died yesterday in Spain.
