Credit: Maged Srour\/IPS<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked \u201cwhat about the people?,\u201d the young Greek economist took a long sip of wine and answered with a visibly sarcastic smile \u201cThe people were their servants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether this young man\u2019s interpretation of democracy was wrong or right, accurate or not, more controversial or less, is something too long to explain and anyway it is up to you to judge.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>The poisoned inheritance<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Anyway, the pressing question now is if today\u2019s 1.5 billion youth can bear the baleful load that they inherit from the previous generations.<\/p>\n<p>A swift answer would be \u201cyes.\u201d After all, previous and current generations coped with two European-manufactured Great Wars which soon attracted their decendents\u2013the United States, and other military powers like the \u2013also European\u2013 Soviet Union, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Not only, these generations had also to confront dictatorial regimes, civil wars, poverty, hunger, destruction, and a long list of hardships.<\/p>\n<p>Another question would be if the current and future generations will be able to fix up the so many horrifying wrongs made by the previous ones, such as the looming threat of a nuclear war, the voracious depletion of natural resources, the dominance of private corporations, the supplantation of human beings by robots\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 Let alone the never-ending game of the world\u2019s top guns \u2013the US, the UK, France, Russia and China, precisely those who hold the unexplainable and unjustifiable power to override, through their veto, the decisions made by the world\u2019s over 190 countries. They exercise such a power in their ironically called \u201cSecurity Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the future will be, reality shows that the world\u2019s youth now receive a very heavy inheritance, in a scenario already shaped by two George Orwell\u2019s masterpieces: \u201c1984\u201d and \u201cAnimal Farm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>See this dozen facts, selected among so many others, which have been provided on the occasion of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/youth\/iyd2022.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Youth Day<\/a>, marked 12 August.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>The figures<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Half of the people on Planet Earth are 30 or younger, and this is expected to reach 57% by the end of 2030.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">While you read this, 1.8 billion young people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/youth\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the largest generation of youth in history<\/a>, are transitioning to adulthood.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Today, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/youth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/08\/WYP2019_10-Key-Messages_GZ_8AUG19.pdf\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.2 billion youth aged 15 to 24<\/a>, accounting for 16% of the global population. By 2030 their number is projected to have grown by 7%, to nearly 1.3 billion. These two figures, combined with the previous one, make an average of 1.5 billion youth.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><strong>No voice?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>In spite of their high preparedness and growing consciousness and activism and their indisputable right to decide upon their present and future, today\u2019s youth voice is still far from being heard, let alone listened to.<\/p>\n<p>A UN Department of Economics and Social Affairs research shows that there are about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/youth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/08\/WYP2019_10-Key-Messages_GZ_8AUG19.pdf\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 1.2 billion youth aged 15 to 24<\/a>in the world today. \u201cThis is a huge percentage of the global population whose interests and voices have traditionally been overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, today\u2019s youth has practically nul participation in national legislative bodies. Globally, only 2.6% of parliamentarians are under 30 years old, and less than 1% of them are women.<\/p>\n<p>On this issue, a survey on the occasion of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/youth\/iyd2022.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Youth Day<\/a>, the United Nations specialised bodies revealed that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">76% of those under 30 years old think politicians don\u2019t listen to young people<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">8 in 10 people think that current political systems need drastic reforms to be fit for the future<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">69% of people think that more opportunities for younger people to have a say in policy development would make political systems better.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, the average age of those who decide upon the present and future of the world\u2019s youth is as high as 64 years.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>\u00a0No jobs?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/publications\/WCMS_853329\/lang--en\/index.htm\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Employment Trends for Youth 2022<\/a> reveals that those aged between 15 and 24 years have experienced a much higher percentage loss in employment than adults since early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Also that t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/publications\/WCMS_853329\/lang--en\/index.htm\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he total global number of unemployed youths is estimated to reach 73 million in 2022<\/a>, six million above the pre-pandemic level of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/newsroom\/news\/WCMS_181795\/lang--en\/index.htm\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60 million jobs that will be created by the green economy in 30 years do not even exist yet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>No education?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cUnless we take action, the share of children leaving school in developing countries who are unable to read could increase from 53 to 70 percent,\u201d warned UN Secretary General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, in his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/education-day\/messages\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> message<\/a> on the 2022<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/education-day\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Day of Education<\/a> on 24 January.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some 1.6 billion school and college students had their studies interrupted at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 and it\u2019s not over yet, said Guterres.<\/p>\n<p>Today, school closures continue to disrupt the lives of over 31 million students, \u201cexacerbating a global learning crisis.\u201d See: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2022\/01\/70-children-developing-countries-left-unable-read\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Up to 70% of Children in Developing Countries to Be Left Unable to Read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>The climate crunch<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Young people bear a disproportionate burden of the environmental crises the world faces today, which will impact their future, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/young-people-call-intergenerational-solidarity-climate-crisis\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminds<\/a> the UN Environment Programme (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNEP<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch shows that many young people feel frustrated and unheard, creating a sense of unfairness that has, in recent years, fueled a surge of climate activism led by youth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abi7339\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> study<\/a>, children born in 2020 will experience a \u201ctwo to seven-fold increase in extreme climate events,\u201d particularly heatwaves, compared to people born in 1960.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u201cRule of the People\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another question raises here: has the concept of democracy as the rule of people ever been really practised?<\/p>\n<p>Before you judge, please be reminded of the findings released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxfam International<\/a> in its May 2022 report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/research\/profiting-pain\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Profiting from Pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBillionaires have seen their fortunes increase as much in 24 months as they did in 23 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose in the food and energy sectors have seen their fortunes increase by a billion dollars every two days,\u201d adds the research carried out by this global movement of people working together with more than 4,100 partner organisations and communities in over 90 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, \u201cfood and energy prices have increased to their highest levels in decades.
