Historically, progressive critics have charged the military with a litany of sins, including discrimination against LGBTQ soldiers and a reliance on recruiting in poor communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen came Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine,\u201d writes Tierney. \u201cNo foreign conflict since the Spanish Civil War has so captured the imagination of the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian President Vladimir Putin is the antithesis of everything the left stands for,\u201d Tierney adds. \u201cNot only did he launch an unprovoked attack on a sovereign democratic nation, but he has also disparaged LGBTQ rights, multiculturalism, and immigration, and\u00a0claimed\u00a0that \u2018the liberal idea\u2019 has \u2018outlived its purpose.\u2019 Zelensky, in contrast, has built bridges with the global left. He addressed the Glastonbury music festival, in the U.K., where the revelers chanted his name to the tune of The White Stripes\u2019 \u2018Seven Nation Army.\u2019 In Germany, the Green Party led the charge to supply weapons to Kyiv, overturning decades of German wariness about intervening in foreign wars. LGBTQ protesters in Berlin also demanded that Germany step up arms shipments to Ukraine, so that a Pride parade can, one day, be held in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol. Ukrainian liberals\u2014artists, translators, teachers, filmmakers\u2014have joined the struggle. As one writer\u00a0put\u00a0it: \u2018All our hipsters in Ukraine fight.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My new article <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAtlantic?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@TheAtlantic<\/a> on why the left is learning to love the military. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nk0Pii4kel\" >https:\/\/t.co\/nk0Pii4kel<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dominic Tierney (@domtierney) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/domtierney\/status\/1566480788241219584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >September 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Tierney concedes that \u201cthere\u2019s a leftist fringe in the United States that still considers America the world\u2019s evil empire and remains deeply hostile to its military power,\u201d but says \u201cthe bulk of the left has shown remarkable solidarity with the Ukrainian cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiberals who once protested the Iraq War now urge Washington to dispatch more rocket launchers to defeat Russian imperialism,\u201d Tierney says. \u201cRepresentative Jamaal Bowman of New York, a member of the progressive caucus, tweeted: \u2018We unequivocally stand with the global Ukrainian community in the wake of Putin\u2019s attack.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, what makes Tierney\u2019s triumphant militarist smut so annoying isn\u2019t how he\u2019s wrong, it\u2019s how he\u2019s right. You can take issue all you like with his use of the word \u201cleft\u201d to describe liberal supporters of capitalism and empire who just want the empire to be a bit less embarrassing and maybe forgive their student loans, but that\u2019s the fault of the generations of psyops that have gone into <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=szVbrUxJVso\" >sabotaging the left<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/caitlinjohnstone.substack.com\/p\/they-demolished-the-left-and-burned\" >destroying its memory<\/a>, not Tierney\u2019s. What he is saying about liberals who once protested the Iraq invasion now supporting US proxy warfare in Ukraine is broadly true, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mate.substack.com\/p\/funding-the-ukraine-proxy-war-bernie\" >including<\/a> throughout the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mate.substack.com\/p\/on-ukraine-progressive-proxy-warriors?s=w\" >Bernie Sanders\/AOC \u201cprogressive\u201d wing<\/a> of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just a fact that in 2022, liberals are gaga for US interventionism. Because this war can be (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jncatron\/status\/1566961942752894985?s=20&amp;t=vqGUUzeZmojb4wSbTPE6Jw\" >falsely<\/a>) marketed as an \u201cunprovoked\u201d invasion by evil Bad Guys fighting against the virtuous Good Guys of the US\/NATO\/Ukraine partnership, and because it\u2019s not our sons and daughters getting thrown into the gears of war, people who would normally be more skeptical of militarism and interventionism have indeed jumped aboard the proxy war train.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Urging progressives to support the Ukraine proxy war, Bernie Sanders aide <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattduss?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@mattduss<\/a> whitewashes the US role, attacks dissenting voices, and advocates the dangerous militarism that he claims to oppose. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/J09BXxDtrK\" >https:\/\/t.co\/J09BXxDtrK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aaron Mat\u00e9 (@aaronjmate) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaronjmate\/status\/1534227229584105473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >June 7, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This war has in that sense become the Gulf War of the 2020s: a \u201cgood war\u201d that rehabilitates the image of US interventionism for a war-weary public. Just as the 1990 Gulf War was used to get Americans over what warmongers called \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1991\/03\/04\/kicking-the-vietnam-syndrome\/b6180288-4b9e-4d5f-b303-befa2275524d\/\" >Vietnam syndrome<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a healthy aversion to interventionism following the horrific disaster of the Vietnam War\u00a0\u2014 the war in Ukraine is being used to wear down the public\u2019s collective immune response to interventionism built up after the 2003 Iraq invasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a proud day for America, and by God, we\u2019ve kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all,\u201d the elder President Bush <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/PPP-1991-book1\/html\/PPP-1991-book1-doc-pg195-2.htm\" >said<\/a> after winning his war\/propaganda operation in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we all remember what happened after that, don\u2019t we? A decade later came 9\/11, and a public now re-warmed to the idea of beneficent military interventionism overwhelmingly consented to two full-scale ground invasions of two separate nations on the promise of swift victory where the troops will be greeted as liberators. What followed was some\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bylinetimes.com\/2021\/09\/15\/up-to-six-million-people-the-unrecorded-fatalities-of-the-war-on-terror\/\" >six million deaths<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 roughly two thousand times the number killed on 9\/11 \u2014 while trillions of dollars were siphoned from the American public to the war industry amid an unprecedented new era of military expansionism.<\/p>\n<p>The public has again been won back over to the idea of military interventionism, using an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/caitlinjohnstone.substack.com\/p\/three-illuminating-quotes-about-the\" >unprecedented<\/a> narrative management push which saw coverage of the foreign war in Ukraine <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/2022\/04\/08\/networks-covered-the-war-in-ukraine-more-than-the-us-invasion-of-iraq\/\" >eclipse even wars the US has directly participated in<\/a>.
