She beat out former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and is expected to be formally named prime minister by the Queen on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>As the British foreign secretary, Truss has delivered some of the most hawkish rhetoric against Russia in NATO\u2019s response to the invasion of Ukraine. When the war first broke out, Truss said that she supported<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-60544838\" > individuals from the UK who wanted to fight in Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While campaigning to become the prime minister, Truss said if she took the position, she would follow in Johnson\u2019s footsteps and be Ukraine\u2019s \u201cgreatest friend\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/volodymyr-zelensky-ukraine-boris-johnson-vladimir-gdp-b2133632.html\" >to ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin \u201cfails in Ukraine and suffers a strategic defeat.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a report from<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/GYPIb\" > <em>The Financial Times<\/em><\/a>, Truss and her team have been frustrated that the US hasn\u2019t taken a \u201charder line\u201d on Russia even as Washington has pledged over $13 billion in weapons for Ukraine, dwarfing the $2.8 billion in military aid London has committed.<\/p>\n<p>While the UK isn\u2019t contributing nearly as much money as the US, Britain is one of the leading NATO supporters of Ukraine. The British are currently training thousands of Ukrainian soldiers inside the UK, with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2022\/08\/15\/ukrainians-receiving-infantry-training-in-the-uk\/\" >the goal of training 10,000 within 120 days<\/a>. According to reports from <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2022\/04\/17\/british-sas-soldiers-are-training-troops-on-ukrainian-territory\/\" >The Times<\/a><\/em> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/X6JQb\" ><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, British special operations forces are on the ground in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Truss has also voiced her opposition to negotiations with Russia, saying <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/world-news\/russia-ukraine-crisis\/uk-foreign-secy-liz-truss-calls-for-negotiations-with-russia-after-its-defeat-in-ukraine-articleshow.html#:~:text=So%20my%20very%20strong%20message%20is%20we%20have%20to%20defeat%20Russia%20first%2C%20and%20negotiate%20later%2C\" >talks could only happen after Moscow is \u201cdefeated.\u201d<\/a> Johnson frequently discouraged negotiations and reportedly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2022\/08\/31\/report-russia-ukraine-tentatively-agreed-on-peace-deal-in-april\/\" >played an integral role<\/a> in the failure of earlier peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, a pattern that will likely continue under a Truss premiership.<\/p>\n<p>Truss has also been hawkish in her rhetoric against China <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/libertarianinstitute.org\/news-roundup\/uk-wants-global-nato-capable-of-defending-pacific\/\" >and has called for a \u201cglobal NATO\u201d<\/a> that\u2019s capable of defending Taiwan and the broader Asia Pacific region. She is expected to be confrontational with Beijing and will reportedly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/ezeyG\" >classify China as a \u201cthreat\u201d to British national security for the first time.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Liz Truss will be the next British prime minister.
