Let\u2019s hope they are right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who\u2019s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories,\u201d Patrick Freyne <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio-web\/harry-and-meghan-the-union-of-two-great-houses-the-windsors-and-the-celebrities-is-complete-1.4504502\"  rel=\"\">wrote<\/a> last year in The Irish Times. \u201cMore specifically, for the Irish, it\u2019s like having a neighbour who\u2019s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monarchy obscures the crimes of empire and wraps them in nostalgia. It exalts white supremacy and racial hierarchy. It justifies class rule. It buttresses an economic and social system that callously discards and often consigns to death those considered the lesser breeds, most of whom are people of color. The queen\u2019s husband Prince Phillip, who died in 2021, was notorious for making racist and sexist remarks, politely explained away in the British press as \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/prince-philip-long-history-racist-problematic-language-2021-4\"  rel=\"\">gaffes<\/a>.\u201d He described Beijing, for example, as \u201cghastly\u201d during a 1986 visit and told British students: \u201cIf you stay here much longer you&#8217;ll all be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1392413\/Prince-Philip-defends-infamous-slitty-eyed-gaffe.html\"  rel=\"\">slitty-eyed.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cries of the millions of victims of empire; the thousands <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-12997138.amp\"  rel=\"\">killed<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leighday.co.uk\/latest-updates\/cases-and-testimonials\/cases\/the-mau-mau-claims\/\"  rel=\"\">tortured, raped and imprisoned<\/a> during the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya; the 13 Irish civilians <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishcentral.com\/roots\/history\/what-happened-on-bloody-sunday-in-northern-ireland.amp\"  rel=\"\">gunned down<\/a> in \u201cBloody Sunday;\u201d the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/indigenous\/residential-school-children-deaths-numbers-1.6182456\"  rel=\"\">more than<\/a> 4,100 First Nations children who died or went missing in Canada\u2019s residential schools, government-sponsored institutions established to \u201cassimilate\u201d indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture, and the hundreds of thousands <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/watson.brown.edu\/costsofwar\/costs\/human\"  rel=\"\">killed<\/a> during the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan are drowned out by cheers for royal processions and the sacral aura an obsequious press weaves around the aristocracy. The coverage of the queen\u2019s death is so mind-numbingly vapid \u2014 the BBC sent out a news alert on Saturday when Prince Harry and Prince William, accompanied by their wives, surveyed the floral tributes to their grandmother displayed outside Windsor Castle \u2014 that the press might as well turn over the coverage to the mythmakers and publicists employed by the royal family.<\/p>\n<p>The royals are oligarchs. They are guardians of their class. The world\u2019s largest landowners <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritynetworth.com\/articles\/entertainment-articles\/the-worlds-10-largest-private-land-owners\/\"  rel=\"\">include<\/a> King Mohammed VI of Morocco with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritynetworth.com\/articles\/billionaire-news\/biggest-landowners-world\/\"  rel=\"\">176<\/a> million acres, the Holy Roman Catholic Church with 177 million acres, the heirs of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia with 531 million acres and now, King Charles III with 6.6 <em>billion<\/em> acres of land. British monarchs <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/stories\/celebrities\/inside-the-british-royal-familys-28-billion-money-machine\/\"  rel=\"\">are worth<\/a> almost $28 billion. The British public <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/uk-pay-27-3-million-151025983.html\"  rel=\"\">will provide<\/a> a $33 million subsidy to the Royal Family over the next two years, although the average household in the U.K. saw its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/uk-household-incomes-fall-ons-085118405.html\"  rel=\"\">income fall<\/a> for the longest period since records began in 1955 and 227,000 households <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crisis.org.uk\/about-us\/media-centre\/227-000-households-across-britain-are-experiencing-the-worst-forms-of-homelessness\/\"  rel=\"\">experience<\/a> homelessness in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Royals, to the ruling class, are worth the expense. They are effective tools of subjugation. British postal and rail workers <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/sep\/09\/royal-mail-and-rail-workers-cancel-strikes-after-the-queen-death\"  rel=\"\">canceled<\/a> planned strikes over pay and working conditions after the queen\u2019s death. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/queen-death-uk-rail-trade-union-b2163656.html\"  rel=\"\">postponed<\/a> its congress. Labour Party members <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/1568686435246686209\"  rel=\"\">poured out<\/a> heartfelt tributes. Even <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XC_euP_4bxM&amp;t=660s\"  rel=\"\">Extinction Rebellion<\/a>, which should know better, indefinitely <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/XRebellionUK\/status\/1567977328025964544\"  rel=\"\">canceled<\/a> its planned \u201cFestival of Resistance.\u201d The BBC\u2019s Clive Myrie <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bUUDCoidk4o\"  rel=\"\">dismissed<\/a> Britain\u2019s energy crisis \u2014 caused by the war in Ukraine \u2014 that has thrown millions of people into severe financial distress as \u201cinsignificant\u201d compared with concerns over the queen&#8217;s health. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chrishedges.substack.com\/p\/listen-to-this-article-the-dawn-of#details\"  rel=\"\">climate emergency<\/a>, pandemic, the deadly folly of the U.S. and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chrishedges.substack.com\/p\/nato-the-most-dangerous-military\"  rel=\"\">NATO\u2019s proxy war<\/a> in Ukraine, soaring inflation, the rise of neo-fascist movements and deepening social inequality will be ignored as the press spews florid encomiums to class rule. There will be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/governments-plan-10-day-mourning-27944035\"  rel=\"\">10 days<\/a> of official mourning.<\/p>\n<p>In 1953, Her Majesty\u2019s Government sent three warships, along with 700 troops, to its colony British Guiana, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/markcurtis.info\/2007\/02\/12\/the-intervention-in-british-guiana-1953\/\"  rel=\"\">suspended<\/a> the constitution and overthrew the democratically elected government of Cheddi Jagan. Her Majesty\u2019s Government <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/apartheid-made-in-britain-richard-dowden-explains-how-churchill-rhodes-and-smuts-caused-black-south-africans-to-lose-their-rights-1370856.html\"  rel=\"\">helped to build<\/a> and long supported the apartheid government in South Africa. Her Majesty\u2019s Government savagely <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2016\/aug\/18\/uncovering-truth-british-empire-caroline-elkins-mau-mau\"  rel=\"\">crushed<\/a> the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theelephant.info\/photos\/2021\/12\/01\/unhistories-kenyas-mau-mau-detention-camps-and-torture\/\"  rel=\"\">Mau Mau independence movement<\/a> in Kenya from 1952 to 1960, herding 1.5 million Kenyans into concentration camps where many were tortured. British soldiers castrated suspected rebels and sympathizers, often with pliers, and raped girls and women. By the time India won independence in 1947 after two centuries of British colonialism, Her Majesty\u2019s Government <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/therealnews.com\/ignorance-inspired-brexit-imperial-nostalgia\"  rel=\"\">had looted<\/a> $45 trillion from the country and violently crushed a series of uprisings, including the First War of Independence in 1857. Her Majesty\u2019s Government <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5954455\/British-colonial-forces-raped-teenager-tortured-civilians-1950s-Cyprus-uprising.html\"  rel=\"\">carried out<\/a> a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/2012\/jul\/27\/brutality-british-forces-1950s-cyprus\"  rel=\"\">dirty war<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/britain-waged-psychological-war-in-cyprus-l2gxfbnsv83\"  rel=\"\">to break<\/a> the Greek Cypriot War of Independence from 1955 to 1959 and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/markcurtis.info\/2007\/02\/13\/the-covert-war-in-yemen-1962-70\/\"  rel=\"\">later in<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/opinion\/uks-century-long-war-against-yemen\"  rel=\"\"> Yemen<\/a> from 1962 to 1969. Torture, extrajudicial assassinations, public hangings and mass executions by the British were routine. Following a protracted lawsuit, the British government agreed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leighday.co.uk\/latest-updates\/blog\/2017-blogs\/the-mau-mau-case-five-years-on\/\"  rel=\"\">to pay<\/a> nearly \u00a320 million in damages to over 5,000 victims of British abuse during war in Kenya, and in 2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-46978271\"  rel=\"\">another payout<\/a> was made to survivors of torture from the conflict in Cyprus. The British state attempts to obstruct lawsuits stemming from its colonial history. Its settlements are a tiny fraction of the compensation <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taxjustice.net\/2020\/06\/09\/slavery-compensation-uk-questions\/\"  rel=\"\">paid<\/a> to British slave owners in 1835, once it \u2014 at least formally \u2014 abolished slavery.<\/p>\n<p>During her 70-year reign, the queen never offered an apology or called for reparations.<\/p>\n<p>The point of social hierarchy and aristocracy is to sustain a class system that makes the rest of us feel inferior. Those at the top of the social hierarchy hand out tokens for loyal service, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE). The monarchy is the bedrock of hereditary rule and inherited wealth. This caste system <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/archives\/news\/55750\/their-royal-heilnesses\/\"  rel=\"\">filters down<\/a> from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/news\/edward-viii-wallis-simpson-nazi-sympathizers-hitler)\"  rel=\"\">Nazi-loving<\/a> House of Windsor to the organs of state security and the military. It regiments society and keeps people, especially the poor and the working class, in their \u201cproper\u201d place.<\/p>\n<p>The British ruling class clings to the mystique of royalty and fading cultural icons as James Bond, the Beatles and the BBC, along with television shows such as \u201cDownton Abbey\u201d \u2014 where in one episode the aristocrats and servants are convulsed in fevered anticipation when King George V and Queen Mary schedule a visit \u2014 to project a global presence. Winston Churchill\u2019s bust remains <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/white-house-churchill-bust-sculpture-b1790838.html\"  rel=\"\">on loan<\/a> to the White House. These myth machines sustain Great Britain\u2019s \u201cspecial\u201d relationship with the United States. Watch the satirical film <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Loop-Peter-Capaldi\/dp\/B0038BH3LC\"  rel=\"\">In the Loop<\/a> to get a sense of what this \u201cspecial\u201d relationship looks like on the inside.<\/p>\n<p>It was not until the 1960s that \u201ccoloured immigrants or foreigners\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/jun\/02\/buckingham-palace-banned-ethnic-minorities-from-office-roles-papers-reveal\"  rel=\"\">were permitted<\/a> to work in clerical roles in the royal household, although they had been hired as domestic servants. The royal household and its heads are legally exempt from laws that prevent race and sex discrimination, what Jonathan Cook calls \u201can apartheid system benefitting the Royal Family alone.\u201d Meghan Markle, who is of mixed race and who <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220603090125\/https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/mar\/08\/meghan-and-prince-harry-oprah-winfrey-interview-special-12-things-we-learned\"  rel=\"\">contemplated suicide<\/a> during her time as a working royal, said that an unnamed royal <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220604160808\/https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/mar\/08\/queen-prince-philip-oprah-winfrey-interview-archie-harry-meghan)\"  rel=\"\">expressed concern<\/a> about the skin color of her unborn son.<\/p>\n<p>I got a taste of this suffocating snobbery in 2014 when <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fYykQTZ55zg\"  rel=\"\">I participated<\/a> in an Oxford Union debate asking whether Edward Snowden was a hero or a traitor. I went a day early to be prepped for the debate by Julian Assange, then seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy and currently in His Majesty&#8217;s Prison Belmarsh. At a lugubrious black-tie dinner preceding the event, I sat next to a former MP who asked me two questions I had never been asked before in succession. \u201cWhen did your family come to America?\u201d he said, followed by \u201cWhat schools did you attend?\u201d My ancestors, on both sides of my family, arrived from England in the 1630s. My graduate degree is from Harvard. If I had failed to meet his litmus test, he would have acted as if I did not exist.<\/p>\n<p>Those who took part in the debate \u2013 my side arguing that Snowdon was a hero narrowly won \u2013 signed a leather-bound guest book. Taking the pen, I scrawled in large letters that filled an entire page: \u201cNever Forget that your greatest political philosopher, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/thomas-paine-our-contemporary\/\"  rel=\"\">Thomas Paine<\/a>, never went to Oxford or Cambridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paine, the author of the most widely read political essays of the 18th century, <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/rights-of-man-by-thomas-paine\"  rel=\"\">Rights of Man<\/a><\/em>, <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ycgkogD7Jw4\"  rel=\"\">The Age of Reason<\/a><\/em> and <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/billofrightsinstitute.org\/primary-sources\/common-sense\"  rel=\"\">Common Sense<\/a><\/em>, blasted the monarchy as a con. \u201cA French bastard landing with an armed banditti and establishing himself as King of England against the consent of the natives, is in plain terms a very paltry rascally original\u2026The plain truth is that the antiquity of the English monarchy will not bear looking into,\u201d he wrote of William the Conqueror. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/paine\/commonsense\/sense3.htm\"  rel=\"\">He ridiculed hereditary rule<\/a>. \u201cOf more worth is one honest man to society, and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.\u201d He went on: \u201cOne of the strangest natural proofs of the folly of hereditary right in kings is that nature disproves it, otherwise she would not so frequently turn it into ridicule, by giving\u00a0 mankind <em>an ass for a lion<\/em>.\u201d He called the monarch \u201cthe royal brute of England.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the British ruling class tried to arrest Paine, he fled to France where he was one of two foreigners elected to serve as a delegate in the National Convention set up after the French Revolution. He denounced the calls to execute Louis XVI. \u201cHe that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression,\u201d Paine said. \u201cFor if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.\u201d Unchecked legislatures, he warned, could be as despotic as unchecked monarchs. When he returned to America from France, he condemned slavery and the wealth and privilege accumulated by the new ruling class, including George Washington, who had become the richest man in the country. Even though Paine had done more than any single figure to rouse the country to overthrow the British monarchy, he was turned into a pariah, especially by the press, and forgotten. He had served his usefulness. White British friends often have stories about ancestors that tie them to some obscure aristocrat. Donald Trump, who <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-40097665\"  rel=\"\">fashioned<\/a> his own heraldic coat of arms, was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/trump-s-obsession-royals-their-golden-lifestyle-dates-back-decades-ncna1013911\"  rel=\"\">obsessed<\/a> with obtaining <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trump-royal-treatment-state-visit-united-kingdom\/story?id=63323425\"  rel=\"\">a state visit<\/a> with the queen.
