While pledging the bloc\u2019s support for Kiev, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated that joining would require the consensus of all 30 members.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<p>In a video address, Zelensky said Ukraine was already a <em>\u201cde facto NATO ally\u201d<\/em> and said he was applying to make it official, calling the ceremonial signing of the application a <em>\u201cdecisive step.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe trust each other, we help each other, and we protect each other,\u201d<\/em> the AP quoted him as saying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>NATO had announced an <em>\u201cunprecedented\u201d<\/em> address by Stoltenberg after Zelensky\u2019s video, but when the bloc\u2019s secretary general actually appeared he repeated previous talking points.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cNATO is not party to the conflict, but we provide support to Ukraine so it can uphold its right for self-defense enshrined in the UN charter,\u201d<\/em> Stoltenberg said. <em>\u201cOurs is a defensive alliance. We stand united and determined to defend and protect every NATO ally and every inch of allied territory.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"read-more large read-more__right\" right to apply\u201d<\/em> but getting accepted would require the consensus of all 30 members.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOur focus now is providing Ukraine immediate support,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Stoltenberg also repeated the rejection of Russia\u2019s <em>\u201cillegal annexation\u201d<\/em> of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf Russia stops fighting, there will be peace, if Ukraine stops fighting, it will cease to exist as an independent sovereign nation in Europe,\u201d<\/em> he added, using a variation on a talking point recently embraced by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Zelensky\u2019s wife.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Calling Kiev a <em>\u201cvictim of aggression,\u201d<\/em> Stoltenberg said the bloc must work to <em>\u201censure [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin doesn\u2019t win,\u201d<\/em> because anything else would tell the world that <em>\u201cauthoritarian countries like Russia can use force\u201d<\/em> to achieve their goals.<\/p>\n<p>Taking only four questions from the press, Stoltenberg concluded by repeating, <em>\u201cNATO is not party to the conflict, we support Ukraine but that does not make us party to the conflict.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\"
