Characterizing the protest as an attempt to \u201cstand up for press freedom everywhere,\u201d Corbyn <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremycorbyn\/status\/1578310093510086656\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warned<\/a>: \u201cIf they can silence Assange, they can silence anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian is a journalist,\u201d Corbyn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShadiaED\/status\/1578721862850183168\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in an interview. \u201cJournalism is not a crime. If he is extradited to the U.S.A., any other investigative journalist is at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That message was echoed by WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson. You\u2019ve taken enormous risks and made enormous sacrifices to do that. And you\u2019ve faced horrible personal abuse and attacks upon your life and your character as a result\u2026 But there are millions of people that support you all around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just some of those, and we\u2019ve completely surrounded parliament to show our support for you,\u201d Corbyn added. \u201cOur demand [for] the British government: Do not deport you; instead, free you so you can return to your passion, your skill, your genius of being a journalist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a last-ditch effort to avoid extradition to the U.S., Assange\u2019s legal team has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/07\/01\/assange-makes-final-appeal-against-us-extradition\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">filed an appeal<\/a>\u00a0at the U.K.\u2019s High Court to block the transfer, which was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/17\/chilling-message-journalists-world-over-uk-approves-assange-extradition-us\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">formally approved<\/a>\u00a0by U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel in June. The High Court is expected to announce whether it will hear the appeal in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Stella Assange\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/assange-supporters-form-human-chain-uk-parliament-2022-10-08\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>Reuters<\/em>\u00a0on Saturday that British government officials should try to convince their counterparts in the U.S. to withdraw the extradition bid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/04\/11\/dark-moment-press-freedom-snowden-leads-global-chorus-condemning-assange-arrest\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">launched<\/a>\u00a0in 2019 by then-President Donald Trump\u2019s administration and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/20\/journalism-not-crime-outrage-judge-approves-assange-extradition-us\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pursued<\/a>\u00a0relentlessly by President Joe Biden\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s already gone on for three-and-a-half years,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is a stain on the United Kingdom and is a stain on the Biden administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the Atlantic, Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben &amp; Jerry\u2019s Ice Cream, was among those who demonstrated outside the DOJ. \u201cIt\u2019s time to end the war on journalism and free Assange,\u201d the activist tweeted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yo \u2066<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@POTUS<\/a>\u2069, the US is trying to put Assange in jail for life for publishing the truth about war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. And there\u2019s no free press without a free Assange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given that he is being persecuted for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/21\/opinion\/laura-poitras-assange-espionage-act.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">common journalistic practice<\/a>\u00a0of publishing classified information to expose wrongdoing in service of the public good, press freedom and human rights advocates have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/02\/08\/press-freedom-groups-urge-biden-doj-drop-disastrous-charges-against-assange\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">denounced<\/a>\u00a0the indictment of Assange as a landmark attack on and threat to First Amendment protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian Assange exposed the crimes of the most powerful governments and corporations in the world today,\u201d Misty Winston, a leading organizer of the D.C. rally, said this week in a statement. \u201cHe should be praised, not prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last July that the U.S. \u201cwill always support the indispensable work of independent journalists around the world,\u201d critics were quick to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/07\/20\/critics-note-blinkens-vow-support-independent-journalists-does-not-apply-julian\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">point out<\/a>\u00a0that Washington\u2019s purported commitment to press freedom has never applied to Assange.<\/p>\n<p>Two years before Assange\u2019s 2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/04\/11\/wikileaks-founder-julian-assange-dragged-out-ecuadorian-embassy-arrested-uk-police\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arrest<\/a>, for example, the CIA under then-Director Mike Pompeo\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/09\/26\/trumps-cia-considered-kidnapping-or-assassinating-assange-report\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly<\/a>\u00a0plotted to kidnap\u2014and discussed plans to assassinate\u2014the WikiLeaks founder.<\/p>\n<p>In a message to Biden, Corbyn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremycorbyn\/status\/1578802217737678848\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Saturday: \u201cYou won a presidential election against an extremely intolerant right-wing president. You won that with the support of millions of Americans who want to live in a free, open, democratic society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you really wanting your administration to be the one that imprisons a journalist for telling the truth about wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, and the environmental destruction by big business and arms companies in so many parts of the world?\u201d he asked. \u201cThink of your place in history. Are you to go down in history as the president who put a journalist in prison on a triple life sentence? Or, will you get your place in history as the man who stood up for free speech?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Fuller, director of the Assange Defense Committee, said this week in a statement that \u201cthe Biden DOJ could end this travesty at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdministration officials have given speech after speech touting the principles of a free press abroad and the importance of journalism to a healthy democracy,\u201d said Fuller. \u201cIt\u2019s time they practice what they preach and drop these charges immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Solidarity events were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assangedefense.org\/press-release\/oct-8th-assange-rallies-across-the-u-s\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">held<\/a>\u00a0Saturday in cities across the U.S., including San Francisco, Denver, Tulsa, Seattle, and Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a march in Melbourne, where Assange\u2019s brother, Gabriel Shipton,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/rotting-in-jail-thousands-march-for-julian-assanges-release-as-his-brother-urges-anthony-albanese-to-act\/g3mo7a9zs\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">urged<\/a>\u00a0Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to \u201ccall Joe Biden and say, \u2018Hasn\u2019t Julian suffered enough?
