9 Oct 2022 – <\/em>Supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange held a massive transatlantic protest yesterday to demand freedom for the incarcerated journalist.<\/p>\n

In London, thousands of people formed a giant human chain around Britain\u2019s parliament and called for Assange\u2019s immediate release from the nearby maximum-security Belmarsh prison, where he has suffered for years under conditions that experts have\u00a0condemned<\/a>\u00a0as torture.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., people gathered outside the Department of Justice (DOJ) and implored Attorney General Merrick Garland to end the United States government\u2019s attempt to extradite Assange, who faces up to 175 years behind bars on espionage charges stemming from his publication of information that exposed\u00a0war crimes<\/a>\u00a0committed by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did it!\u201d tweeted Stella Assange, wife of the jailed Australian publisher. \u201cJulian will be so energized and thankful for the support that you have shown for him,\u201d she\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a recording thanking those who surrounded the Palace of Westminster\u2014home to the United Kingdom\u2019s House of Commons and House of Lords\u2014on\u00a0both sides<\/a>\u00a0of the River Thames.<\/p>\n
