{"id":222025,"date":"2022-10-17T12:00:40","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T11:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=222025"},"modified":"2022-10-14T05:56:36","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T04:56:36","slug":"prof-dietrich-fischer-co-founder-of-transcend-passed-away-on-18-oct-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2022\/10\/prof-dietrich-fischer-co-founder-of-transcend-passed-away-on-18-oct-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof. Dietrich Fischer, Co-Founder of TRANSCEND, Passed Away on 18 Oct 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dietrich-Dieter-Fischer-e1510135945622.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101253 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dietrich-Dieter-Fischer-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Dear friends, Members of TRANSCEND,<\/p>\n<p>My dear friend, co-founder of TRANSCEND in 1993 with myself and Fumiko Nishimura left us on this date after a short hospital stay in coma, basically due to his diabetes for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Very competent in mathematics, modeling and economics he was for many years a professor in New York, till early retirement and full dedication to TRANSCEND, first from Basel, in Switzerland, then in Germany; particularly responsible for TRANSCEND University Press and as\u00a0board member for TRANSCEND as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>He was deeply committed to peace and expressed very often his happiness at working for peace rather than for the economic growth built into economics.\u00a0 But he also found a very important in-between\u00a0field of specialization:\u00a0 the economics of disarmament.\u00a0 His basic work, however, was on Karl Menger and strength as being strong in oneself, not in the sense of over others.\u00a0 He applied this to military power, contrasting the Swiss strategy from 1971 of very high defensive strength with neither intent nor capability to attack others, nor as reaction to attack.\u00a0 Swiss history goes far to illustrate\u00a0the validity of this thesis.<\/p>\n<p>Dear, dear Dieter&#8211;you are deeply missed.\u00a0 But my mind turns from sadness to gratitude to you for our wonderful friendship&#8211;40 good years of cooperation with no quarrel!\u00a0 You often referred to yourself as phlegmatic, unperturbed by the ups and downs of reality&#8211;including our little TRANSCEND part of it&#8211;taking problems as they came, having the long term perspective, as we gained in experience.\u00a0 Countless were the dialogues between us, mutual questioning and learning, never debates to prove oneself right.<\/p>\n<p>Let us celebrate your life while deploring that you are no longer among us, in deep gratitude for all you did to inspire and help&#8211;and for peace in general. <span class=\"st\"><em>Rest in peace.<\/em><em> Requiescat in pace.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>_______________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Dietrich-Fischer-e1477398742690.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-54505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Dietrich-Fischer-e1477398742690.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a> Dietrich Fischer (1941-2015) from M\u00fcnsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. Fischer was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University 1986-88, has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities, and been a consultant to the United Nations. He was co-founder, with Johan Galtung, of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment<\/a> <em>in 1993<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/johan-galtung-300x300-1.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-155267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/johan-galtung-300x300-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/johan-galtung-300x300-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/johan-galtung-300x300-1.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a> Johan Galtung, a professor of peace studies, dr hc mult, is founder of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND International<\/a><em> and rector of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tpu\/\" >TRANSCEND Peace University<\/a><em>. <\/em><em>He was awarded among others the 1987 Right Livelihood Award, known as the Alternative Nobel Peace Prize.<\/em> <em>Galtung\u00a0has mediated in\u00a0over 150 conflicts in more than 150 countries, and written more than 170 books on peace and related issues<\/em>,<em> 96 as the sole author. More than 40 have been translated to other languages, including <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tup\/index.php?book=1\" >50 Years-100 Peace and Conflict Perspectives<\/a><em> published by <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tup\/\" >TRANSCEND University Press<\/a><em>.
