[File: Hannah McKay\/Reuters]<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>25 Oct 2022 &#8211; <\/em>For the first time in the United Kingdom\u2019s history, the country is being led by a non-white person as prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>At 42, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2022\/10\/25\/live-news-rishi-sunak-to-become-uk-prime-minister\" >Rishi Sunak<\/a>, who is Hindu, is also the youngest prime minister in more than 200 years.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in Southampton to ethnic Indian immigrant parents.<\/p>\n<p>And on Monday, he was elected by his Conservative Party to take over from Liz Truss, who broke an unenviable record as the shortest-serving prime minister. She held Britain\u2019s top job for 44 days, failing to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/10\/21\/lettuce-outlasts-uk-liz-truss-in-salad-days-for-social-media\" >outlast a head of lettuce<\/a> that a British tabloid livestreamed for about a week as it strove to answer the question: \u201cWhich wet lettuce will last longer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But is Sunak\u2019s appointment <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/10\/24\/a-diwali-gift-indians-celebrate-rishi-sunaks-rise-to-uk-pm\" >a win for representation<\/a>, or mere cosmetic change that will plough the country into further austerity measures while promising tax breaks for the rich?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-1901227 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/INTERACTIVE-RISHI-SUNAK-TO-BECOME-UKS-NEXT-PM.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C769\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE - RISHI SUNAK TO BECOME UK'S NEXT PM\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to Nayaz Qazi, director of the Conservative Friends of India organisation, Sunak\u2019s elevation is \u201ca very proud moment for British Indians and all ethnic minority communities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRishi\u2019s appointment is a testament to how the Conservative Party promotes talent and meritocracy,\u201d Qazi told Al Jazeera. \u201cThis will inspire all communities, particularly the British Indian and ethnic minority communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for others, reaching the highest rank in Westminster \u2013 while a feat in itself as a member of an ethnic minority \u2013 is less about British multiculturalism and more about embodying the Conservative Party\u2019s increasingly right-wing policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the recent records of both Priti Patel and Suella Braverman [who also have Indian origins] in the Home Office, there is little reason to assume a politician coming from an ethnic minority will mean they have a progressive policy agenda,\u201d said Michael Walker, a contributing editor to Novara Media.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-newsletter-slot\">\n<div class=\"sib-newsletter-form general-style\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup Widget\">\n<div class=\"sib-form-container\">\n<div class=\"sib-container--large sib-container--horizontal\">\n<div class=\"sign-up-for-al-jazeera-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, in his previous contest with Truss, Sunak pledged to put a cap on refugee numbers \u2013 an appalling policy that would clearly be against international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RishiSunak?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#RishiSunak<\/a> All \u201cPOC\u201d are not the same + it demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding not only of this, but also of history + reality,to interpret todays events  as some sort of win 4 \u201crepresentation\u201d, using language + frameworks appropriated from black American experience<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Emma Dabiri (@EmmaDabiri) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmmaDabiri\/status\/1584642600170311680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >October 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A previous finance minister under Boris Johnson\u2019s cabinet, Sunak was a fierce advocate for Brexit and has promised to implement harsher measures against asylum seekers and immigration.<\/p>\n<p>His policy includes a\u00a010-point plan to fix the \u201cbroken\u201d asylum system and end what he called the \u201cfarce\u201d of housing asylum seekers in hotels.<\/p>\n<p>Priyamvada Gopal, a professor\u00a0of postcolonial studies at Cambridge University, said Sunak\u2019s position cannot be celebrated as a win for diversity, given that the Tory party\u2019s policies are not known for empowering racial and other minorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSunak has himself consistently played on the \u2018anti-woke\u2019 side of the culture wars the party likes to stoke, adopting the role of a racial minority who is happy to enable white majoritarianism,\u201d Gopal told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<h2>For the rich<\/h2>\n<p>There is also the class factor. The multimillionaire Oxford-educated former hedge fund boss is married to an Indian billionaire\u2019s daughter and has in the past boasted about not having friends from the \u201cworking class\u201d and more recently, about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LiamThorpECHO\/status\/1584287848194142208\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diverting<\/a> money from poorer areas to more affluent neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the Tories are promising further cuts to our already collapsing public services, it might be Sunak\u2019s extraordinary wealth that is the more relevant factor to the public than his ethnicity,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n<p>He inherits a job plagued by the economic turmoil that his predecessor Truss put in motion with her fiscal policies, resulting in the British pound tumbling to record lows as markets collapsed and leading to a rare rebuke from the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations to PM Rishi Sunak. <\/p>\n<p>No this is not a historic moment.
