{"id":224883,"date":"2022-12-05T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T12:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=224883"},"modified":"2022-12-02T03:44:21","modified_gmt":"2022-12-02T03:44:21","slug":"cryptome-founder-asks-to-be-indicted-with-assange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2022\/12\/cryptome-founder-asks-to-be-indicted-with-assange\/","title":{"rendered":"Cryptome Founder Asks to Be Indicted with Assange"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<div class=\"entry-summary hentry-wrapper th-highlighted-summary th-text-primary-dark th-text-xl th-w-single-view md:th-px-4xl sm:th-px-lg th-px-base\">30 Nov 2022 &#8211; John<em> Young, the founder of the Cryptome website, has asked the U.S. Justice Department to also indict him as he published un-redacted State Dept. files before WikiLeaks did.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cryptome-logo-whistleblowing-assange.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-224884 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cryptome-logo-whistleblowing-assange-e1669952148177.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cryptome-logo-whistleblowing-assange-e1669952148177.png 600w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cryptome-logo-whistleblowing-assange-e1669952148177-300x90.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The founder of a U.S.-based website that earlier published the same un-redacted documents that <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> publisher Julian Assange was later indicted for has invited the U.S. Department of Justice to make him a co-defendant with Assange.<\/div>\n<div>\n<article id=\"post-87343\" class=\"post-87343 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-assange-extradition category-biden-administration category-intelligence-2 category-julian-assange category-legal category-media category-u-s category-u-s-justice-dept category-wikileaks tag-joe-lauria tag-john-young tag-julian-assange tag-laura-poitras\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>\u201cCryptome published the decrypted unredacted State Department Cables on September 1, 2011 prior to publication of the cables by WikiLeaks,\u201d\u00a0 John Young wrote in a Justice Department submission form, which Young posted on Twitter on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo US official has contacted me about publishing the unredacted cables since cryptome published them,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI respectfully request that the Department of Justice add me as a co-defendant in the prosecution of Mr. Assange under the Espionage Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assange has been charged with possession and dissemination of classified information, some of the same material that Young possesses and disseminated.<\/p>\n<p>Young founded Cryptome, which he calls a \u201cfree public library\u201d in 1996. It was a precursor of <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> in publishing raw, classified and unclassified government documents on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Young testified at Assange\u2019s extradition hearing in London in September 2020. Gen. Robert Carr,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20130731\/15572324025\/us-military-admits-no-one-died-because-mannings-leaks.shtml\" >testified under oath<\/a> that no one was actually harmed by the <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> releases. Then Defense Secretary Robert Gates <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/30\/gates-on-leaks-wiki-and-otherwise\/?_r=0&amp;mtrref=undefined&amp;gwh=DEDAAF74E4DC59CA6CDF37C82CFD73CC&amp;gwt=pay&amp;assetType=REGIWALL\" >called the leaks<\/a> \u201cawkward\u201d and \u201cembarrassing\u201d but said they did only \u201cfairly modest\u201d damage to U.S. foreign interests.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/wikileaks-damage\/us-officials-privately-say-wikileaks-damage-limited-idUSN1816319120110118\" >reported<\/a> in January 2011:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cInternal U.S. government reviews have determined that a mass leak of diplomatic cables caused only limited damage to U.S. interests abroad, despite the Obama administration\u2019s public statements to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>A congressional official briefed on the reviews said the administration felt compelled to say publicly that the revelations had seriously damaged American interests in order to bolster legal efforts to shut down the WikiLeaks website and bring charges against the leakers.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Assange was actually more concerned about redactions than the editors of his mainstream media partners who worked with him on publishing the releases.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Davis, an Australian television journalist who documented Assange\u2019s activities during the weekend in London before publication, said that while the other editors went home, Assange pulled all nighters to redact informants names.<\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uZkyLoaMvRg&amp;feature=emb_imp_woyt<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guardian Journalists &amp; the Password<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two days before publication Assange <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Letter-to-US-Ambassador-from-Julian-Assange-26-November-2010.pdf\" >wrote<\/a> to the U.S. ambassador in London seeking help from \u201cthe United States Government to privately nominate any specific instances (record numbers or names) where it considers the publication of information would put individual persons at significant risk of harm that has not already been addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-wikileaks-usa-letter\/text-of-state-department-letter-to-wikileaks-idUSTRE6AR1E420101128\" >responded<\/a> by demanding that <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> stop publication of the cables and return those in its possession.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, only a redacted version of the State Department Cables was published in November 2010 by <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> and its mainstream partners, <em>The New York Times, The Guardian, El Pais, Le Monde <\/em>and<em> DER SPEIGEL.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This remained the case until a book was published by two <em>Guardian<\/em> journalists in February 2011, in which the password to the unredacted files mysteriously appears as part of a chapter heading. This went unnoticed, as <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> tried to keep it quiet, until a German publication named <em>Freitag<\/em> said it had the password in August 2011.<\/p>\n<p>When Assange learned this he contacted the State Department to try to warn them about the impending publication of informants\u2019 names.\u00a0 He was rebuffed. This is shown in a scene in Laura Poitras\u2019 film <em>Risk<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrapper\">\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HQA4vwynYhY<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>PirateBay published the unredacted files first and then Cryptome did on Sept. 1, 2011. It was the next day that Assange decided to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/09\/02\/wikileaks_28\/\" >publish<\/a> the unredacted files so that informants could search for their names and try to get to safety.
