This sudden jolt of mainstream support comes as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2022\/nov\/30\/australian-prime-minister-anthony-albanese-us-government-julian-assange-wikileaks\" >news breaks<\/a> that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been personally pushing the US government to bring the Assange case to a close.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Guardian<\/em>\u2019s participation in this letter is particularly noteworthy, given the leading role that publication has played in manufacturing public support for his persecution in the first place. If <em>The Guardian<\/em> really wants to help end the persecution of the heroic <em>WikiLeaks<\/em> founder, the best way to do that would be to retract those many smears, spin jobs and outright lies, and to formally apologize for publishing them.<\/p>\n<p>This is after all the same\u00a0Guardian\u00a0which published the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/gqKSv\" >transparently ridiculous<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1118944500259414016?s=20\" >completely invalidated<\/a>\u00a02018 report that Trump lackey Paul Manafort had met secretly with Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy, not once but multiple times. Not one shred of evidence has ever been produced to substantiate this claim despite the embassy being one of the most heavily surveilled buildings on the planet at the time, and the Robert Mueller investigation, whose expansive scope would obviously have included such meetings, reported absolutely nothing to corroborate it. It was a bogus story which all accused\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trump-russia-manafort\/ex-trump-campaign-head-manafort-denies-ever-meeting-with-wikileaks-assange-idUSKCN1NW2C2\" >parties<\/a>\u00a0have\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/418756-wikileaks-launches-legal-fund-in-effort-to-sue-guardian-over\" >forcefully denied<\/a>\u00a0and no serious person believes is true, yet to this day it still <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/nov\/27\/manafort-held-secret-talks-with-assange-in-ecuadorian-embassy\" >sits on The Guardian\u2019s website<\/a> without retraction of any kind.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/guardian?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@guardian<\/a> truly wants the charges dropped against Julian Assange, a good way to facilitate that would be to retract and apologize for all the many smears and outright lies they&#39;ve published about him to help manufacture consent for those charges.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kUE6vlmbLl\" >https:\/\/t.co\/kUE6vlmbLl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Caitlin Johnstone (@caitoz) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/caitoz\/status\/1597538045330620416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >November 29, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This is the same\u00a0Guardian\u00a0which\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/jan\/10\/julian-assange-ecuador-embassy-wikileaks-us-sweden\" >ran an article in 2018<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cThe only barrier to Julian Assange leaving Ecuador\u2019s embassy is pride\u201d, arguing that Assange looked ridiculous for continuing his political asylum in the embassy because \u201cThe WikiLeaks founder is unlikely to face prosecution in the US.\u201d The article was authored by the odious James Ball, whose\u00a0article begins: \u201cAccording to Debrett\u2019s, the arbiters of etiquette since 1769: \u2018Visitors, like fish, stink in three days.\u2019 Given this, it\u2019s difficult to imagine what Ecuador\u2019s London embassy smells like, more than five-and-a-half years after\u00a0Julian Assange\u00a0moved himself into the confines of the small flat in Knightsbridge, just across the road from Harrods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the same\u00a0Guardian\u00a0which\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2012\/jun\/24\/nick-cohen-julian-assange-paranoia\" >published an article<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cDefinition of paranoia: supporters of Julian Assange\u201d, arguing that Assange defenders are crazy conspiracy theorists for believing the US would try to extradite Assange because \u201cBritain has a notoriously lax extradition treaty with the United States,\u201d because \u201cwhy would they bother to imprison him when he is making such a good job of discrediting himself?\u201d, and \u201cbecause there is no extradition request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the same\u00a0Guardian\u00a0which\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2017\/apr\/23\/when-nigel-farage-met-julian-assange\" >published<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@caityjohnstone\/assange-smear-29-he-conspired-with-nigel-farage-444edd59956f\" >ludicrous report<\/a>\u00a0about Assange potentially receiving documents as part of a strange Nigel Farage\/Donald Trump\/Russia conspiracy, a claim based primarily on vague analysis by a single anonymous source described as a \u201chighly placed contact with links to US intelligence\u201d. The same\u00a0Guardian\u00a0which has flushed standard journalistic protocol down the toilet by reporting on Assange\u2019s \u201cties to the Kremlin\u201d (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@caityjohnstone\/assange-smear-4-hes-a-russian-agent-24e21be98087\" >not a thing<\/a>) without even bothering to use the word \u201calleged\u201d on\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/sep\/21\/julian-assange-russia-ecuador-embassy-london-secret-escape-plan\" >more<\/a>\u00a0than\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2018\/sep\/26\/ecuador-gave-julian-assange-diplomatic-role-at-its-moscow-embassy-says-mp\" >one occasion<\/a>. The same\u00a0Guardian\u00a0which advanced many more virulent smears as documented in\u00a0a 2018 article by\u00a0<em>The Canary<\/em>\u00a0titled \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/global\/world-analysis\/2018\/12\/20\/guilty-by-innuendo-the-guardian-campaign-against-julian-assange-that-breaks-all-the-rules\/\" >Guilty by innuendo: the Guardian campaign against Julian Assange that breaks all the rules<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1118944500259414016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1118944500259414016%7Ctwgr%5Eff17d1f3b9b146d81db019092091a8dd05ae8b7f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcaitlinjohnstone.com%2F2022%2F11%2F30%2Fthe-guardian-could-help-assange-by-retracting-all-the-lies-it-published-about-him%2F<\/p>\n<p>Even the wording of the joint letter itself is dishonest when coming from The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis group of editors and publishers, all of whom had worked with Assange, felt the need to publicly criticise his conduct in 2011 when unredacted copies of the cables were released, and some of us are concerned about the allegations in the indictment that he attempted to aid in computer intrusion of a classified database,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2022\/nov\/28\/media-groups-urge-us-drop-julian-assange-charges\" >the letter<\/a> reads. \u201cBut we come together now to express our grave concerns about the continued prosecution of Julian Assange for obtaining and publishing classified materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2020\/02\/27\/assange-extradition-debunking-the-smear-about-assange-recklessly-publishing-unredacted-documents\/\" >discussed previously<\/a>, the narrative that Assange recklessly published unredacted documents in 2011 is itself a dishonest smear,\u00a0and the unredacted files were actually published elsewhere as the result of a real password being recklessly published in a book by Guardian journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding (the same Luke Harding who co-authored the bogus Manafort-Assange story). Assange took extraordinary measures to try and minimize the damage that was done by those Guardian reporters, but wound up getting thrown under the bus and blamed for their actions anyway.<\/p>\n<p>If The Guardian is sincere in its stated desire to see the end of the persecution of Julian Assange, the single most effective thing it could do to help advance that goal would be to publicly acknowledge that it helped to deceive the world about him, and work to correct the record.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Guardian ran a campaign to demonise J.Assange in 2018, well-documented here. This is not just normal false reporting we expect from ultra-establishment media -it helped prepare the ground for Assange\u2019s prosecution. The Guardian easily played a larger role in manufacturing that collective misconception than any other single news outlet in the world, and as such it could do tremendous good by retracting and apologizing for its publications which fed into it.<\/p>\n<p>This is the sort of thing a publication would do if it was really interested in truth, justice, and journalistic ethics. Is it what the people who run The Guardian will choose to do?
