{"id":22627,"date":"2012-11-05T12:00:05","date_gmt":"2012-11-05T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=22627"},"modified":"2012-11-02T18:55:52","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T18:55:52","slug":"who-and-what-gains-from-myanmars-genocide-of-the-rohingya-and-other-muslims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/11\/who-and-what-gains-from-myanmars-genocide-of-the-rohingya-and-other-muslims\/","title":{"rendered":"Who and What Gains from Myanmar&#8217;s Genocide of the Rohingya and Other Muslims?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The site of massive violence and arson of Rohingya and other Muslim neighborhood in Kyauk Hpyu happened to be the site where <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?a=v&amp;pid=gmail&amp;attid=0.1&amp;thid=13aba88ecd361a19&amp;mt=image\/tiff&amp;url=https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/0\/?ui%3D2%26ik%3D8500097afb%26view%3Datt%26th%3D13aba88ecd361a19%26attid%3D0.1%26disp%3Dsafe%26realattid%3D832f5dcbae077b00_0.1%26zw&amp;sig=AHIEtbTYIxIIBh_ftZOkZWdDBaBa0zOstw\"  target=\"_blank\">China is planning a Special Econ and Technological Zone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why bother with mass eviction and typical Myanmar land grab when you have locally produced<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrweb.org\/legal\/genocide.html\"  target=\"_blank\"> Genocide <\/a>against the Rohingya and other Muslim inhabitants as a tool of &#8216;developmental policy&#8217;?<\/p>\n<p>It serves many purposes:<\/p>\n<p>1) it makes the local Rakhine Kular-haters happy;<\/p>\n<p>2) it rallies the majority &#8220;Buddhist&#8221; behind &#8220;Buddhism&#8221; and Naypyidaw&#8217;s sociopaths in reformist guise;<\/p>\n<p>3) it further chips away the Lady&#8217;s popularity abroad (beyond her new role as &#8220;business cover&#8221;);<\/p>\n<p>4) it serves as a mass psycho-therapy for the oppressed of Burma who have 50-years&#8217; worth of pent-up hate, bitterness, anger and powerlessness;<\/p>\n<p>5) it afforded the military strategists to play &#8220;political and historical anesthesiologist&#8221; with the &#8220;Buddhist&#8221; masses, most importantly the monks themselves who now rally behind the very army that slaughtered their Saffron monks only 5 years ago;<\/p>\n<p>6) it gave again the regime in Naypyidaw a chance to frame the issue as &#8220;preemptive strike against &#8216;radical Islam&#8217;, which is the language of Washington; and<\/p>\n<p>7) it allows space for political manipulations by disgruntled elements who have an ax to grind against Than Shwe who left them marginalized in the new power-wealth set-up.<\/p>\n<p>__________________________<\/p>\n<p><em>Dr. Maung Zarni is <\/em><em>member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment,<em> founder and director of the Free Burma Coalition (1995-2004), and a visiting fellow (2011-13) at the Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit, Department of International Development, London School of Economics.
