During the war, units of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B) took part in the Holocaust, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Massacres_of_Poles_in_Volhynia_and_Eastern_Galicia\" >killing<\/a> at least 100,000 Jews and Poles.\u00a0 Mykola Lebed, a top aide to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the fascist OUN-B, was recruited by the C.I.A. after the war, according to a 2010 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/iwg\/reports\/hitlers-shadow.pdf\" >study<\/a> by the U.S. National Archives.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The government study said, \u201cBandera\u2019s wing (OUN\/B) was a militant fascist organization.\u201d Bandera\u2019s closest deputy, Yaroslav Stetsko, said: \u201c\u201cI\u2026fully appreciate the undeniably harmful and hostile role of the Jews, who are helping Moscow to enslave Ukraine\u2026. I therefore support the destruction of the Jews and the expedience of bringing German methods of exterminating Jewry to Ukraine\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The study says: \u201cAt a July 6, 1941, meeting in Lw\u00f3w, Bandera loyalists determined that Jews \u2018have to be treated harshly\u2026. We must finish them off\u2026. Regarding the Jews, we will adopt any methods that lead to their destruction.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Lebed himself <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/iwg\/reports\/hitlers-shadow.pdf\" >proposed<\/a> to \u201c\u2019cleanse the entire revolutionary territory of the Polish population,\u2019 so that a resurgent Polish state would not claim the region as in 1918.\u201d Lebed was the \u201cforeign minister\u201d of a Banderite government in exile, but he later broke with Bandera for acting as a dictator. The U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps termed Bandera \u201cextremely dangerous\u201d yet said he was \u201clooked upon as the spiritual and national hero of all Ukrainians\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The C.I.A. was not interested in working with Bandera, pages 81-82 of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/iwg\/reports\/hitlers-shadow.pdf\" >report<\/a> say, but the British MI6 was. \u201cMI6 argued, Bandera\u2019s group was \u2018the strongest Ukrainian organization abroad, is deemed competent to train party cadres, [and] build a morally and politically healthy organization\u2026.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 An early 1954 MI6 summary noted that, \u201cthe operational aspect of this [British] collaboration [with Bandera] was developing satisfactorily. West German intelligence, under former Nazi intelligence chief Reinhard Gehlen, then worked with Bandera, who was eventually assassinated with cyanide dust by the KGB in Munich in 1959.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Instead of Bandera, the C.I.A. was interested in Lebed, despite his fascist background. They set him up in an office in New York City from which he directed sabotage and propaganda operations on the agency\u2019s behalf inside Ukraine against the Soviet Union.\u00a0 The U.S. government study says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cCIA operations with these Ukrainians began in 1948 under the cryptonym CARTEL, soon changed to AERODYNAMIC. \u2026 Lebed relocated to New York and acquired permanent resident status, then U.S. citizenship. It kept him safe from assassination, allowed him to speak to Ukrainian \u00e9migr\u00e9 groups, and permitted him to return to the United States after operational trips to Europe. Once in the United States, Lebed was the CIA\u2019s chief contact for AERODYNAMIC. CIA handlers pointed to his \u2018cunning character,\u2019 his \u2018relations with the Gestapo and \u2026 Gestapo training,\u2019 [and] the fact that he was \u2018a very ruthless operator.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The C.I.A. worked with Lebed on sabotage and pro-Ukrainian nationalist propaganda operations inside Ukraine until Ukraine\u2019s independence in 1991. \u201cMykola Lebed\u2019s relationship with the CIA lasted the entire length of the Cold War,\u201d the study says. \u201cWhile most CIA operations involving wartime perpetrators backfired, Lebed\u2019s operations augmented the fundamental instability of the Soviet Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong>Bandera Revival<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79967\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Bandera-monument-Lvov.jpeg\" class=\"image-anchor\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79967\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Bandera-monument-Lvov.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Bandera-monument-Lvov.jpeg 387w, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Bandera-monument-Lvov-160x186.jpeg 160w\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"450\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79967\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-79967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bandera monument in Lvov. (wikimapia.org)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The U.S. thus covertly kept Ukrainian fascist ideas alive inside Ukraine until at least Ukrainian independence was achieved. \u201cMykola Lebed, Bandera\u2019s wartime chief in Ukraine, died in 1998. He is buried in New Jersey, and his papers are located at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University,\u201d the U.S. National Archives study says.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The successor organization to the OUN-B in the United States did not die with him, however. \u00a0It had been renamed the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), according to <em>IBT.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the mid-1980s, the Reagan administration was honeycombed with UCCA members. Reagan personally welcomed [Yaroslav] Stetsko, the Banderist leader who oversaw the massacre of 7,000 Jews in Lviv, in the White House in 1983,\u201d<em> IBT<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/america-backing-neo-nazis-euromaidan-1437848\" >reported.<\/a> \u00a0\u201cFollowing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/ukrainian-parliament-impeaches-president-yanukovich-1437539\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demise of Yanukovich\u2019s regime<\/a>, the UCCA\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MaidanUSA\" >helped organise<\/a>\u00a0rallies in cities across the US in support of the EuroMaidan protests,\u201d it reported.<\/p>\n<p>That is a direct link between Maidan and WWII-era Ukrainian fascism.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Despite the U.S. favoring the less extreme Lebed over Bandera, the latter has remained the more inspiring figure in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">In 1991, the first year of Ukraine\u2019s independence, the neo-fascist Social National Party, later <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Svoboda_(political_party)\" >Svoboda Party<\/a>, was formed, tracing its provenance directly to Bandera. It had a street <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/america-backing-neo-nazis-euromaidan-1437848\" >named<\/a> after Bandera in Liviv, and tried to name the city\u2019s airport after him. (Svoboda won 10 percent of the Rada\u2019s seats in 2012 before the coup and before McCain and Nuland appeared with its leader the following year.)<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">In 2010, pro-Western Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/Yushchenko_Grants_Hero_Status_To_Controversial_Ukrainian_Nationalist\/1937123.html\" >declared<\/a> Bandera a Hero of Ukraine, a status reversed by Yanukovych, who was overthrown.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">More than 50 monuments, busts and museums commemorating Bandera have been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/The-map-of-the-monuments-busts-plaques-and-museums-to-Bandera-Source-Designed-by-O_fig1_265341805\" >erected<\/a> in Ukraine, two-thirds of which have been built since 2005, the year the pro-American Yuschenko was elected. A Swiss academic <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/265341805_Bandera_memorialization_and_commemoration\" >study<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cOn January 13, 2011, the L\u2019vivs\u2019ka Oblast\u2019 Council, meeting at an extraordinary session next to the Bandera monument in L\u2019viv, reacted to the abrogation [skasuvannya] of Viktor Yushchenko\u2019s order about naming Stepan Bandera a \u2018Hero of Ukraine\u2019 by affirming that \u2018for millions of Ukrainians Bandera was and remains a Ukrainian Hero notwithstanding pitiable and worthless decisions of the courts\u2019 and declaring its intention to rename \u2018Stepan Bandera Street\u2019 as \u2018Hero of Ukraine Stepan Bandera Street.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Torchlit parades behind Bandera\u2019s portrait are common in Ukrainian cities, particularly on Jan. 1, his birthday, including this<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/ukraine-march-stepan-bandera\/31635671.html\" > year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong>Mainstream on Neo-Nazis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">From the start of the 2013-2014 events in Ukraine, <strong><em>Consortium News<\/em><\/strong> founder Robert Parry and other writers began providing the evidence NewsGuard says doesn\u2019t exist, reporting extensively on the coup and the influential role of Ukraine\u2019s neo-Nazis. At the time, corporate media also reported on the essential part neo-Nazis played in the coup.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">As <em>The New York Times<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/22\/world\/europe\/ukraine.html\" >reported,<\/a> the neo-Nazi group, Right Sector, had the key role in the violent ouster of Yanukovych. The role of neo-fascist groups in the uprising and its influence on Ukrainian society was well reported by mainstream media outlets at the time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-30414955\" >BBC<\/a>, the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/10\/world\/europe\/ukraine.html?ref=world&amp;_r=0\" >NYT,<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/ukraine\/11025137\/Ukraine-crisis-the-neo-Nazi-brigade-fighting-pro-Russian-separatists.html\" ><em>Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/06\/opinion\/speedie-ukraine-far-right\/index.html?fbclid=IwAR16ypncOvWs-NAN8iFC008JOJVWY5KXx9DIje1oHoo0ZtUpVaJOENNSEAY\" >\u00a0CNN<\/a> all reported on Right Sector, C14 and other extremists\u2019 role in the overthrow of Yanukovych. The BBC ran this report a week after his ouster:<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"rvw814971\" title=\"Neo-Nazi threat in new Ukraine: NEWSNIGHT\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5SBo0akeDMY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">And this one in July 2015:<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"rvw148964\" title=\"The far-right group threatening to overthrow Ukraine's government - Newsnight\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sEKQsnRGv7s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">After the coup a number of ministers in the new government came from neo-fascist parties. \u00a0NBC News (green check) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/ukraine-crisis\/analysis-u-s-cozies-kiev-government-including-far-right-n66061\" >reported<\/a> in March 2014: \u201cSvoboda, which means \u2018Freedom,\u2019 was given almost a quarter of the Cabinet positions in the interim government formed after the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Svoboda\u2019s leader, Tyahnybok, whom McCain and Nuland stood on stage with, once <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-20824693\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for<\/a>\u00a0the liberation of Ukraine from the \u201cMuscovite-Jewish mafia.\u201d <em>The International Business Times<\/em>\u00a0(green check) reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cIn 2005 Tyahnybok signed an open letter to then Ukrainain president Viktor Yushchenko urging him to ban all Jewish organisations, including the Anti-Defamation League, which he claimed carried out \u2018criminal activities [of] organised Jewry\u2019, ultimately aimed at the genocide of the Ukrainian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Before McCain and Nuland embraced Tyahnybok and his social national party, it was condemned by the European Parliament, which said in 2012:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c[Parliament] recalls that racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views go against the EU\u2019s fundamental values and principles and therefore appeals to pro-democratic parties in the Verkhovna Rada [Ukraine\u2019s legislature] not to associate with, endorse, or form coalitions with this party.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Such mainstream reports on Banderism have stopped as the neo-fascist role in Ukraine was suppressed in Western media <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2022\/04\/ukraine-russia-putin-azov-neo-nazis-western-media\" >once<\/a> Putin made \u201cde-nazification\u201d a goal of the invasion.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The Azov Battalion, which arose during the coup, became a significant force in the war against the Russian-speaking people of the Donbass, who resisted the coup. Its commander, Andriy Biletsky, infamously <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/international\/359609-the-reality-of-neo-nazis-in-the-ukraine-is-far-from-kremlin-propaganda\/\" >said<\/a> Ukraine\u2019s mission is to\u00a0\u201clead the White Races of the world in a final crusade for their survival \u2026 against the Semite-led Untermenschen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">In 2014 the now Azov Regiment was officially incorporated into Ukraine\u2019s National Guard under the control of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It is further integrated into the state by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/how-many-neo-nazis-is-the-us-backing-in-ukraine\" >working closely<\/a> with the SBU intelligence service. Azov is the only known neo-fascist component in a nation\u2019s military anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">As part of the Ukraine military, Azov members have still sported yellow arm bands (until this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2022\/06\/02\/caitlin-johnstone-ukraine-solves-nazi-problem-with-new-logo\/\" >week<\/a>) with the Wolfsangel once worn by German SS troops in World War II. Including the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mronline.org\/2022\/03\/28\/mariupol-civilians-denounce-the-crimes-of-the-fighters-of-the-neo-nazi-azov-regiment\/\" >atrocities<\/a> it has continued to commit, Azov shows the world that integration into the state has not denazified them. On the contrary, it may have increased its influence on the state.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The U.S. and NATO have also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/multipolarista.com\/2022\/03\/10\/nato-arming-training-nazis-ukraine-azov\/\" >trained<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mronline.org\/2022\/03\/23\/u-s-and-nato-allies-arm-neo-nazi-units-in-ukraine-as-foreign-policy-elites-yearn-for-afghan-style-insurgency\/\" >armed<\/a>\u00a0Azov since Barack Obama had denied lethal aid to Ukraine. One reason Obama declined sending arms to Ukraine was because he was afraid they may fall\u00a0into these right-wing extremists\u2019 hands.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/11\/us\/politics\/obama-said-to-resist-growing-pressure-from-all-sides-to-arm-ukraine.html\" >According<\/a> to the green-checked <em>New York Times<\/em>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cMr. Obama continues to pose questions indicating his doubts. \u2018O.K., what happens if we send in equipment \u2014 do we have to send in trainers?\u2019 said one person paraphrasing the discussion on the condition of anonymity. \u2018What if it ends up in the hands of thugs? This ignores the stark fact that these groups engage instead in extra-parliamentary extremism.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">In its charge against <em><strong>Consortium News<\/strong> <\/em>for publishing \u201cfalse content\u201d about neo-fascism in Ukraine, NewsGuard\u2019s Zack Fishman wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t evidence that Nazism has a substantial influence in Ukraine. Radical far-right groups in Ukraine do represent a \u2018threat to the democratic development of Ukraine,\u2019 according to <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/report\/analytical-brief\/2018\/far-right-extremism-threat-ukrainian-democracy\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 Freedom House report<\/a>. But it also stated that far-right extremists have poor political representation in Ukraine and no plausible path to power \u2014 for example, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.ua\/ukr\/news\/rezultaty-parlamentskih-vyborov-ukraine-1558364994.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 parliamentary elections<\/a>, the far-right nationalist party Svoboda won 2.2 percent of the vote, while the Svoboda candidate, Ruslan Koshulynskyy, won just 1.6 percent of the vote in the presidential election<i>.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">But this argument of focusing on elections results has been dismissed by a number of mainstream sources, not least of which is the Atlantic Council, probably the most anti-Russian think tank in the world. \u00a0In a 2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/ukrainealert\/ukraine-s-got-a-real-problem-with-far-right-violence-and-no-rt-didn-t-write-this-headline\/\" >article<\/a>, a writer for the Atlantic Council said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cTo be clear, far-right parties like Svoboda perform poorly in Ukraine\u2019s polls and elections, and Ukrainians evince no desire to be ruled by them. But this argument is a bit of \u2018red herring.\u2019 It\u2019s not extremists\u2019 electoral prospects that should concern Ukraine\u2019s friends, <em>but rather the state\u2019s unwillingness or inability to confront violent groups and end their impunity.<\/em> Whether this is due to a continuing sense of indebtedness to some of these groups for fighting the Russians or fear they might turn on the state itself, it\u2019s a real problem and we do no service to Ukraine by sweeping it under the rug.\u201d [Emphasis added.]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cFear that they might turn on the state itself,\u201d acknowledges the powerful leverage these groups have over the government. The Atlantic Council piece then underscores how influential these groups are:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt sounds like the stuff of Kremlin propaganda, but it\u2019s not. Last week Hromadske Radio\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.hromadske.ua\/posts\/far-right-group-c14-wins-funding-from-ukrainian-government\" >revealed<\/a>\u00a0that Ukraine\u2019s Ministry of Youth and Sports is funding the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/khpg.org\/en\/index.php?id=1528928862&amp;w=C14\" >neo-Nazi group C14\u00a0<\/a>to promote \u2018national patriotic education projects\u2019 in the country. On June 8, the Ministry announced that it will award C14 a little less than $17,000 for a children\u2019s camp. It also awarded funds to Holosiyiv Hideout and Educational Assembly, both of which have links to the far-right. The revelation represents a dangerous example of law enforcement tacitly accepting or even encouraging the increasing lawlessness of far-right groups willing to use violence against those they don\u2019t like.<span id=\"more-110668\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of 2018, C14 and other far-right groups such as the Azov-affiliated National Militia,\u00a0Right Sector,\u00a0<em>Karpatska Sich<\/em>, and others have attacked Roma groups\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/khpg.org\/en\/index.php?id=1528928862&amp;w=C14\" >several<\/a>\u00a0times, as well as\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/ukraine-politics\/brothers-in-arms.html\" >anti-fascist<\/a>\u00a0demonstrations,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/korrespondent.net\/ukraine\/3857149-byletskyi-budem-shturmovat-oblsovety-po-vsei-ukrayne\" >city council<\/a>\u00a0meetings, an event\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2018\/05\/ukraine-attack-on-lgbti-event-highlights-police-failure-to-confront-far-right-violence\/\" >hosted\u00a0<\/a>by Amnesty International,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/politicalcritique.org\/cee\/ukraine\/2017\/vcrc-exhibition-art-attack\/\" >art exhibitions<\/a>, LGBT<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/ukraine-lgbt-event-disrupted-azov-chernivtsi\/28062749.html\" >\u00a0events<\/a>,\u00a0and environmental\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=372733363213812&amp;id=285537115266771\" >activists<\/a>. On March 8, violent groups launched attacks against\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/article\/ukraine-authorities-should-respond-attacks-targeting-peaceful-demonstrations\" >International Women\u2019s Day marchers<\/a>\u00a0in cities across Ukraine. In only a few of these cases did police do anything to prevent the attacks, and in some they even\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.criticatac.ro\/lefteast\/a-story-of-one-banner\/\" >arrested<\/a>\u00a0peaceful demonstrators\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/khpg.org\/en\/index.php?id=1516458710\" >rather than the actual perpetrators<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">The Atlantic Council is not the only anti-Russian outfit that recognizes the dangerous power of the neo-fascist groups in Ukraine. \u00a0Bellingcat <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellingcat.com\/news\/uk-and-europe\/2018\/08\/30\/ukrainian-far-right-fighters-white-supremacists-trained-major-european-security-firm\/comment-page-1\/\" >published<\/a>\u00a0an alarming 2018 article headlined,\u00a0\u201cUkrainian Far-Right Fighters, White Supremacists Trained by Major European Security Firm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">NATO has also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mronline.org\/2022\/03\/23\/u-s-and-nato-allies-arm-neo-nazi-units-in-ukraine-as-foreign-policy-elites-yearn-for-afghan-style-insurgency\/\" >trained <\/a>the Azov Regiment, directly linking the U.S. with far-right Ukrainian extremists.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><em>The Hill <\/em>reported in 2017 in an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/international\/359609-the-reality-of-neo-nazis-in-the-ukraine-is-far-from-kremlin-propaganda\/\" >article<\/a> headlined, \u201cThe reality of neo-Nazis in Ukraine is far from Kremlin propaganda,\u201d that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSome\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/national-security\/357735-in-the-new-cold-war-putin-is-employing-lenins-counsel\" >Western observers<\/a>\u00a0claim that there are no neo-Nazi elements in Ukraine, chalking the assertion up to propaganda\u00a0from\u00a0Moscow.\u00a0Unfortunately, they are sadly mistaken.<\/p>\n<p>There are indeed neo-Nazi formations in Ukraine. This has been overwhelmingly confirmed by nearly every major Western outlet. The fact that analysts are able to dismiss it as propaganda disseminated by Moscow is profoundly disturbing.<\/p>\n<p>Azov\u2019s logo is composed of two emblems \u2014 the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/references\/hate-symbols\/wolfsangel\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wolfsangel<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/references\/hate-symbols\/sonnenrad\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sonnenrad<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 identified as neo-Nazi symbols by the Anti-Defamation League. The wolfsangel is used by the U.S. hate group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/references\/hate-symbols\/aryan-nations\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aryan Nations<\/a>, while the Sonnenrad was among the neo-Nazi symbols at this summer\u2019s deadly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2017\/local\/charlottesville-videos\/?utm_term=.aedc35149f4f\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">march<\/a>\u00a0in Charlottesville.<\/p>\n<p>Azov\u2019s neo-Nazi character has been covered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/08\/world\/europe\/islamic-battalions-stocked-with-chechens-aid-ukraine-in-war-with-rebels.html?referrer=\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/sep\/10\/azov-far-right-fighters-ukraine-neo-nazis\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guardian<\/a>, the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-28329329\" >BBC<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/ukraine\/11025137\/Ukraine-crisis-the-neo-Nazi-brigade-fighting-pro-Russian-separatists.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/great-debate\/2015\/05\/05\/in-the-battle-between-ukraine-and-russian-separatists-shady-private-armies-take-the-field\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>,\u00a0among others. On-the-ground journalists from established Western media outlets have written of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/how-many-neo-nazis-is-the-us-backing-in-ukraine\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">witnessing<\/a>\u00a0SS runes, swastikas, torchlight marches, and Nazi salutes. They\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/ukraine\/11025137\/Ukraine-crisis-the-neo-Nazi-brigade-fighting-pro-Russian-separatists.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interviewed<\/a>\u00a0Azov soldiers who readily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2015\/03\/10\/ukraine-azov-brigade-nazis-abuses-separatists\/24664937\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acknowledged<\/a>\u00a0being neo-Nazis. They filed these reports under unambiguous headlines such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/how-many-neo-nazis-is-the-us-backing-in-ukraine\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How many neo-Nazis is the U.S. backing in Ukraine?<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2015\/03\/10\/ukraine-azov-brigade-nazis-abuses-separatists\/24664937\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volunteer Ukrainian unit includes Nazis<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How is this Russian propaganda?<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/Documents\/Countries\/UA\/Ukraine_13th_HRMMU_Report_3March2016.pdf\" >U.N<\/a>. and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2016\/07\/21\/you-dont-exist\/arbitrary-detentions-enforced-disappearances-and-torture-eastern\" >Human Rights Watch<\/a>\u00a0have accused Azov, as well as\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/democracy-post\/wp\/2017\/06\/15\/ukraines-ultra-right-militias-are-challenging-the-government-to-a-showdown\/?utm_term=.2afe53bce27b\" >other<\/a>\u00a0Kiev battalions, of a litany of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/evidence-war-crimes-committed-ukrainian-nationalist-volunteers-grows-269604\" >human rights abuses<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Neo-facism has infected Ukrainian popular culture as well. A half-dozen neo-Nazi music groups held a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/world-news\/europe\/2019-06-18\/ty-article\/.premium\/the-upcoming-neo-nazi-concert-in-ukraine-that-no-one-is-talking-about\/0000017f-e310-d804-ad7f-f3fabfc70000\" >concert<\/a>\u00a0in 2019 commemorating \u00a0the day Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Amnesty International in 2019\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amnesty.org.ua\/nws\/derzhava-vtrachaye-kontrol-nad-radikalnimi-ugrupuvannyami-shho-aktivizuvalisya-u-niztsi-mist-ukrayini\/\" >warned\u00a0<\/a>that \u201cUkraine is sinking into a chaos of uncontrolled violence posed by radical groups and their total impunity. (Greek Parliament TV)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">One of Ukraine\u2019s most powerful oligarchs from the early 1990s,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ihor_Kolomoyskyi\" >Ihor Kolomoisky,<\/a> was an early financial backer of the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion. According to a 2015 Reuters (green-checked) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150505160927\/http:\/blogs.reuters.com\/great-debate\/2015\/05\/05\/in-the-battle-between-ukraine-and-russian-separatists-shady-private-armies-take-the-field\/\" >report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMany of these paramilitary groups are accused of abusing the citizens they are charged with protecting. Amnesty International has reported that the Aidar battalion \u2014 also partially funded by Kolomoisky \u2014 committed war crimes, including illegal abductions, unlawful detention, robbery, extortion and even possible executions.<\/p>\n<p>Other pro-Kiev private battalions have starved civilians as a form of warfare, preventing aid convoys from reaching separatist-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine, according to the Amnesty report.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Ukraine\u2019s private battalions have blackened the country\u2019s international reputation with their extremist views. The Azov battalion, partially funded by Taruta and Kolomoisky, uses the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol as its logo, and many of its members openly espouse neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic views. The battalion members have spoken about \u2018bringing the war to Kiev,\u2019 and said that Ukraine needs \u2018a strong dictator to come to power who could shed plenty of blood but unite the nation in the process.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">In April 2019, the F.B.I. began investigating Kolomoisky for alleged financial crimes in connection with his steel holdings in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Virginia\" title=\"West Virginia\" >West Virginia<\/a> and northern <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio\" title=\"Ohio\" >Ohio.<\/a>\u00a0In August 2020 the U.S. Department of Justice filed civil forfeiture <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-seeks-forfeiture-two-commercial-properties-purchased-funds-misappropriated\" >complaints<\/a> against him and a partner:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cThe complaints allege that Ihor Kolomoisky and Gennadiy Boholiubov, who owned PrivatBank, one of the largest banks in Ukraine, embezzled and defrauded the bank of billions of dollars.\u00a0 The two obtained fraudulent loans and lines of credit from approximately 2008 through 2016, when the scheme was uncovered, and the bank was nationalized by the National Bank of Ukraine.\u00a0 The complaints allege that they laundered a portion of the criminal proceeds using an array of shell companies\u2019 bank accounts, primarily at PrivatBank\u2019s Cyprus branch, before they transferred the funds to the United States.\u00a0 As alleged in the complaint, the loans were rarely repaid except with more fraudulently obtained loan proceeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Meanwhile, the Azov backer\u2019s television channel had by this time aired the hit TV show <em>Servant of the People\u00a0<\/em>(2015-2019), which catapulted Volodymyr Zelensky to fame and ultimately into the presidency under the new Servant of the People Party. The former actor and comedian\u2019s presidential campaign was bankrolled by Kolomoisky, according to multiple reports, including this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2022\/03\/26\/flashback_2019_radio_free_europe_reports_on_zelenskys_oligarch_connection_to_igor_kolomoysky.html#\" >one<\/a> by Radio Free Europe (not rated).<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">During the presidential campaign, <em>Politico<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201cKolomoisky\u2019s media outlet also provides security and logistical backup for the comedian\u2019s campaign, and it has recently emerged that Zelenskiy\u2019s legal counsel, Andrii Bohdan, was the oligarch\u2019s personal lawyer. Investigative journalists have also reported that Zelenskiy traveled 14 times in the past two years to Geneva and Tel Aviv, where Kolomoisky is based in exile.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Before their run-off election, Petro Poroshenko <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2022\/03\/26\/flashback_2019_radio_free_europe_reports_on_zelenskys_oligarch_connection_to_igor_kolomoysky.html#\" >called<\/a> Zelensky \u201cKolomoisky\u2019s puppet.\u201d According to the Pandora Papers, Zelensky<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/ukraine-politics\/reactions-in-ukraine-to-pandora-papers-revelations.html\" > stashed<\/a> funds he received from Kolomoisky off shore.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">During the campaign Zelensky was asked about Bandera. About seven months into his term he traveled to the front line in Donbass to tell Ukrainian troops, where Azov is well-represented, to lay down their arms. Instead he was sent packing. <em>The Kyiv Post<\/em> (green check) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/ukraine-politics\/im-not-a-loser-zelensky-clashes-with-veterans-over-donbas-disengagement.html?__cf_chl_tk=SbolmTBS6QnjMnPJLiQEsivGNnuW6T4od28tzMOrEM0-1646110945-0-gaNycGzNCJE\" >reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen one veteran, Denys Yantar, said they had no arms and wanted instead to discuss protests against the planned disengagement that had taken place across Ukraine, Zelensky became furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Listen, Denys, I\u2019m the president of this country. I\u2019m 41 years old. I\u2019m not a loser. I came to you and told you: remove the weapons. Don\u2019t shift the conversation to some protests,\u2019 Zelensky said, videos of the exchange show. As he said this, Zelensky aggressively approached Yantar, who heads the National Corps, a political offshoot of the far-right Azov volunteer battalion, in Mykolaiv city.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But we\u2019ve discussed that,\u2019 Yantar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I wanted to see understanding in your eyes. But, instead, I saw a guy who\u2019s decided that this is some loser standing in front of him,\u2019 Zelensky said.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">It was a demonstration of the power of the military, including the Azov Regiment, over the civilian president.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">After the Russian invasion, Zelensky was asked in April by Fox News about Azov, which was later defeated in Mariupol. \u201cThey are what they are,\u201d he responded. \u201cThey were defending our country.\u201d He then tries to say because they are part of the military they are somehow no longer neo-Nazis, though they still wear Nazi insignia (until Tuesday). (Fox\u2019s YouTube post removed that question from the interview, but it is preserved here:)<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"rvw930477\" title=\"Fox news Zelensky interviewcut piece from the interview Azov battalion\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bltsSD8QtU4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong>Outrages Greek Officials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Also in April, Zelensky <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2022\/04\/08\/outrage-as-azov-nazi-addresses-greek-parliament\/\" >infuriated<\/a> two former Greek prime ministers and other officials by inviting a member of the Azov Regiment to address the Greek Parliament. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greekreporter.com\/tag\/Tsipras\/\" >Alexis Tsipras<\/a>, a former premier and leader of the main opposition party, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, blasted the appearance of the Azov fighters before parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cSolidarity with the Ukrainian people is a given. But nazis cannot be allowed to speak in parliament,\u201d Tsipras<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atsipras\/status\/1512023668662190082?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1512023668662190082%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgreekreporter.com%2F2022%2F04%2F07%2Fgreek-azov-fighter-zelensky-speech-greek-parliament%2F\" > said<\/a> on social media.\u00a0\u201cThe speech was a provocation.\u201d He said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis\u00a0\u201cbears full responsibility. \u2026 He talked about a historic day but it is a historical shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras called the Azov video being played in parliament a \u201cbig mistake.\u201d\u00a0Former Foreign Affairs Minist<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/bandera-grave.jpg\" class=\"image-anchor\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-80018\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/bandera-grave-500x420.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a>er Nikos Kotzias said: \u201cThe Greek government irresponsibly undermined the struggle of the Ukrainian people, by giving the floor to a Nazi. The responsibilities are heavy. The government should publish a detailed report of preparation and contacts for the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MeRA25\" title=\"MeRA25\" >MeRA25<\/a> party <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mera25_gr\/status\/1512038588355166211\" >said<\/a>\u00a0 Zelenky\u2019s appearance turned into a \u201cNazi fiesta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Zelensky has also not rebuked his ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, for visiting Bandera\u2019s grave in Munich, which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azerbaycan24.com\/en\/german-mp-urges-expulsion-of-ukrainian-ambassador\/\" >provoked<\/a> this reaction from a German MP: \u201cAnyone like Melnik who describes the Nazi collaborator Bandera as \u2018our hero\u2019 and makes a pilgrimage to his grave or defends the right-wing Azov Battalion as \u2018brave\u2019 is actually still benevolently described as a \u2018Nazi sympathizer.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky has closed media outlets and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/20\/ukraine-suspends-11-political-parties-with-links-to-russia\" >outlawed<\/a> 11 political parties, including the largest one, Eurosceptic Opposition Platform for Life (OPZZh) and arrested its leader. None of the 11 shut down \u00a0are far-right parties.<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">Donald Trump was rightly castigated for remarks he made about white supremacists in Charlottesville.
