(Photo: Buda Mendes\/Getty Images)\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Brazil on Sunday faced \u201cits own January 6,\u201d one progressive journalist <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kenklippenstein\/status\/1612154500277755904\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0as thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the presidential offices and the nation\u2019s Congress in Brasilia a week after President Luiz In\u00e1cio\u00a0Lula\u00a0da Silva, commonly known as Lula,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/lula-inauguration\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was sworn in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lula\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/01\/08\/world\/brazil-congress-protests-bolsonaro\/two-months-after-bolsonaros-loss-his-supporters-are-staging-a-major-protest?smid=url-share\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was in<\/a>\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo at the time of the attack and Congress was not in session.<\/p>\n<p>The attack followed months of protests by Bolsonaro supporters, who claim the election Lula won in October was stolen. Bolsonaro spent much of his presidential campaign\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/10\/28\/warnings-right-wing-violence-mount-bolsonaros-son-claims-biggest-electoral-fraud\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">making false claims<\/a>\u00a0about the integrity of the country\u2019s electoral system. The former right-wing president\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2022\/11\/02\/brazil-jair-bolsonaro-reportedly-concedes-election-defeat-amid-severe-unrest\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reluctantly accepted defeat\u00a0<\/a>days after the election, but in late November he\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/22\/straight-donald-trumps-playbook-brazils-bolsonaro-contests-validated-election-loss\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">officially contested<\/a> Lula\u2019s victory, citing an issue with the software used in the voting system, despite independent experts\u2019 reports that it had no effect on the election\u2019s outcome.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All eyes need to be on Brazil right now.
