Love is
\nin her dough as she
\nkneads it with both hands,
\nmixes za’atar spice;
\nin the voice of her silence
\nas she picks up her landline
\none late night, and hears me weep;
\nin her needle as she sews
\na banner for some burning forest,
\nand another for the displaced families
\nof the Danezaa people.<\/p>\n

Love is
\nin her old legs as she
\nwalks by the Salish Sea,
\nfeeds a flock of seagulls, sips
\ntea from a thermos cup, and photos
\nclear waters for our
\nchildren to come.<\/p>\n

Love is
\nin her fingers as she strokes
\nthe trunk of a London plane tree,
\nborn long before she was,
\non fertile soil of Tavistock Square;
\nin her alphabets as she writes
\nanother letter, urging men who
\nread speeches before cameras
\nto stop selling death
\nfor Yemeni mothers.<\/p>\n

Love is
\nwhen I read her poems, recall her verses
\nbut I never tell her;
\nwhen I think of all she has ever said,
\nthings my mother never,
\nbut I never tell her;<\/p>\n

Love is
\nin her filtered coffee on the breakfast table,
\nas she plans a new courtyard of peace
\nin her lover’s home: a man she met when
\nfor the final time
\nshe wanted to be in love.
