The US Air Force later spent $2 million using missiles to blow up what appeared to be a $12 hobbyist balloon.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>19 Feb 2023 &#8211; <\/em>A Chinese balloon that the US military shot down had likely been pushed off course by unexpected weather conditions, according to multiple officials in Washington.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zox-post-body left zoxrel zox100\">\n<p>This is according to numerous reports in major US media outlets, including the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2023\/02\/14\/china-spy-balloon-path-tracking-weather\/\" >Washington Post<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/15\/politics\/us-intel-china-balloon\/index.html\" >CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">In response to hysteria surrounding the Chinese rubber object, the US Air Force subsequently spent roughly $2 million to destroy what appears to have been a hobby group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/feb\/17\/object-us-military-shot-down-amateur-hobbyists-balloon\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">$12 balloon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mL9Jz-Qruho<\/p>\n<p>On February 1, a large Chinese balloon was first seen over the US state Montana.<\/p>\n<p>On February 4, US military fighter jets shot down the rubber object, off the coast of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Washington accused Beijing of using the balloon to spy on US territory.<\/p>\n<p>China adamantly denied that the rubber object was a surveillance device, instead maintaining that it was used for weather research.<\/p>\n<p>There are legitimate reasons to take Beijing at its word. The Washington Post had acknowledged on February 3, \u201cExperts in national security and aerospace said the craft appears to share characteristics with high-altitude balloons used by developed countries around the world <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/5lsuM\" >for weather forecasting<\/a>, telecommunications and scientific research\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" data-twitter-extracted-i1676950515892808946=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><em>The Pentagon itself said that \u201cthe payload wouldn\u2019t offer much in the way of surveillance that China couldn\u2019t collect through spy satellites\u201d and that \u201cthe balloon posed no serious physical or intelligence threat\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Arnaud Bertrand (@RnaudBertrand) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RnaudBertrand\/status\/1621753872040726537?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >February 4, 2023<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The newspaper quoted an anonymous US \u201csenior defense official\u201d who \u201csaid the payload wouldn\u2019t offer much in the way of surveillance that China couldn\u2019t collect through spy satellites\u201d, stating, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t characterize it as revolutionary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Even the bellicose right-wing think tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) \u2013 which is funded by the US government and weapons industry and is notorious for its anti-China bias \u2013 called for caution early on, conceding in a February 3 article: \u201cChina has not used balloons for spying before, and using a balloon would be a step back. The most likely explanation is that this is an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/chinese-spy-balloons-skys-limit\" >errant weather balloon that went astray<\/a>\u2014lost weather balloons are the basis of many \u2018UFO sightings&#8217;\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The neoconservative, US government-funded think tank CSIS is very anti-China, but even it admits:<\/p>\n<p>&quot;China has not used balloons for spying before&#8230; The most likely explanation is that this is an errant weather balloon that went astray&quot;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WN2Wzil3Zs\" >https:\/\/t.co\/WN2Wzil3Zs<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dG99WtDM9y\" >pic.twitter.com\/dG99WtDM9y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ben Norton (@BenjaminNorton) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenjaminNorton\/status\/1622579200455499777?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >February 6, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It was clear from the beginning that the Chinese balloon was part of a manufactured crisis, and its significance, like the rubber object itself, was being blown out of control.<\/p>\n<p>But the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/us-chinese-military-likely-at-center-of-balloon-spying-operation-\/6955611.html\" >media\u2019s hot air<\/a> had the effect of ratcheting up tensions with China, creating fear among the US public, and leading Secretary of State Antony Blinken to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/02\/04\/china-response-blinken-canceled-trip-00081201\" >cancel a diplomatic trip to Beijing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkish US politicians from both the Republican and Democratic Parties, along with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/homeland-security\/commentary\/chinas-spy-balloon-proves-the-us-homeland-vulnerable\" >neoconservative think tanks<\/a>, capitalized on the bubble to portray China as a dangerous threat.<\/p>\n<p>Slate reported that Republican Congressman James Comer, who chairs the US House Oversight Committee, warned that the balloon could have <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2023\/02\/spy-balloon-china-national-security.html\" >\u201cbio-weapons\u201d made in Wuhan<\/a>, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich insisted it \u201ccould be trial runs for low-visibility deliver[y] of devastating EMP weapons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>CNBC declared that the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/08\/spy-balloon-confirms-pattern-of-chinese-behavior-that-poses-threat-to-nato-members-stoltenberg-says.html\" >balloon \u201cthreatens NATO members\u201d<\/a>, citing the Western military alliance\u2019s bellicose Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who denounced the rubber object as a sign of a dangerous \u201cpattern of Chinese behavior\u201d, insisting, \u201cWe need to be aware of the constant risk of Chinese intelligence and step up what we do to protect ourselves\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Spy balloon confirms &#39;pattern of Chinese behavior&#39; that threatens NATO members, Stoltenberg says <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zaih1xmjGp\" >https:\/\/t.co\/zaih1xmjGp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CNBC (@CNBC) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNBC\/status\/1623431846292758528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >February 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>US Air Force spent $2 million to shoot down hobbyists\u2019 $12 balloon<\/h3>\n<p>From February 10 to 12, Air Force fighter jets shot down three objects. At first, US government officials and Western media outlets implied that Washington had targeted more Chinese surveillance devices, but they actually appeared to have been civilian balloons.<\/p>\n<p>The website Aviation Week reported that an amateur balloon belonging to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/defense-space\/aircraft-propulsion\/hobby-clubs-missing-balloon-feared-shot-down-usaf\" >hobbyist group called the Northern Illinois Bottlecap Balloon Brigade<\/a> went missing in the same place at the same time as one of these Air Force bombings.<\/p>\n<p>Aviation Week noted: \u201cThe descriptions of all three unidentified objects shot down Feb. 10-12 match the shapes, altitudes and payloads of the small pico balloons, which can usually be purchased for $12-180 each, depending on the type\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The founder of a company that makes pico balloons for hobbyists told Aviation Week, \u201cI tried contacting our military and the FBI\u2014and just got the runaround\u2014to try to enlighten them on what a lot of these things probably are. And they\u2019re going to look not too intelligent to be shooting them down\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>British newspaper The Guardian followed up on this report, in its own article amusingly titled \u201cObject downed by US missile may have been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/feb\/17\/object-us-military-shot-down-amateur-hobbyists-balloon\" >amateur hobbyists\u2019 $12 balloon<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9096\" src=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Guardian-balloon-12-hobbyist-1024x468.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Guardian-balloon-12-hobbyist-1024x468.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Guardian-balloon-12-hobbyist-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Guardian-balloon-12-hobbyist-768x351.jpg 768w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Guardian-balloon-12-hobbyist.jpg 1261w\" alt=\"Guardian balloon $12 hobbyist\" width=\"880\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Researcher Stephen Semler estimated that the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stephensemler.substack.com\/p\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-shoot-down\" >Pentagon spent around $2 million<\/a> in this operation to shoot down the hobbyists\u2019 balloon over Lake Huron.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force used two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles in the attack, which cost more than $440,000 each and are manufactured by the arms corporation Raytheon.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">How much did it cost to shoot down what was most likely a balloon over Lake Huron?
