{"id":23155,"date":"2012-11-19T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T12:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=23155"},"modified":"2023-05-22T08:59:16","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T07:59:16","slug":"people-come-into-our-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/11\/people-come-into-our-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"People Come Into Our Lives . . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I.<br \/>\nPeople enter our lives at unexpected times<br \/>\nChanging us in profound ways . . .<br \/>\nA glance, a smile or frown,<br \/>\nA word &#8212; spoken or written &#8212;<br \/>\nAn act of kindness or harm.<\/p>\n<p>Some remain in our lives for a lifetime,<br \/>\n\u201cOthers\u201d for a moment.<br \/>\nWhatever it may be,<br \/>\nThe entry of \u201cothers\u201d into our lives<br \/>\nIs always an encounter of consequence,<br \/>\nNot to be treated lightly,<br \/>\nNor dismissed as chance.<\/p>\n<p>The entry into our lives of \u201cothers\u201d<br \/>\nIs to be pursued &#8212; explored, understood,<br \/>\nFor it is more than it seems,<br \/>\nIt is a sealing of minds, lives, and spirits.<br \/>\nIt is a connection.<\/p>\n<p>II.<br \/>\nI was blessed yesterday to meet a man<br \/>\n&#8212; A person of color \u2013<br \/>\nA man of quiet dignity,<br \/>\nHis years honed by life lived amidst<br \/>\nDoubts and uncertainties,<br \/>\nUnanwered questions,<br \/>\nA man &#8212; humble and sincere.<\/p>\n<p>I listened as he spoke of his life.<br \/>\nNot a frozen written narrative,<br \/>\nBut an unfolding of his heart.<br \/>\nGraceful words,<br \/>\nMagnified in meaning<br \/>\nBy the deliberate meter of his speech.<br \/>\nA sacred moment.<\/p>\n<p>The man spoke of his lifetime search &#8212; his longing<br \/>\nFor a home &#8212; not a house &#8212; but a home &#8212;<br \/>\nA place, anchor, refuge . . . \u00a0for his soul.<br \/>\nA grounded piece of earth,<br \/>\nUpon which he could stand,<br \/>\nPlant roots, grow, and become.<br \/>\nA place where he could say:<br \/>\n\u201cI am home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>III.<br \/>\nI was changed by his words.<br \/>\nHe may never know this<br \/>\nUnless along the way,<br \/>\nHe finds this poem.<br \/>\nBut no more needs to be said.<\/p>\n<p>I will remember his lined face,<br \/>\nGentle voice,<br \/>\nDeep set eyes,<br \/>\nPeaceful countenance . . .<br \/>\nAll shaping the moment,<br \/>\nAffirming &#8212; forever &#8212;<br \/>\nThere is no \u201cother.\u201d<br \/>\nThank you, Clive.<\/p>\n<p><em>October 29, 2012<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>____________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Anthony Marsella, Ph.D., a \u00a0member of the TRANSCEND Network, is a past president of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii, and past director of the World Health Organization Psychiatric Research Center in Honolulu.
