The 2023 theme of its 75th anniversary focuses on the urgency of combating racism and racial discrimination.<span id=\"more-179929\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>More: nearly a quarter of a century ago, the world adopted in South Africa the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/background\/durban-declaration-and-programme-of-action\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Durban Declaration<\/a> to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, distrust, intolerance, and hate, globally.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, these \u201ccontagious killers\u201d not only continued unabated but are now more spread than ever in all societies, in particular in those under the dominance of the so-called \u2018white supremacy.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"metasingle\"><span class=\"meta\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"featimg\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-storypage_img  wp-post-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/Library\/2023\/03\/indigenouspeoples-629x427.jpg\" alt=\"A family from Sachac, a Quechua farming community in the Andes highlands region of Cuzco in southeastern Peru. CREDIT: Mariela Jara\/IPS<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><em><strong>Centuries of colonialism, enslavement<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Such a \u201cPernicious Evil\u201d as rightfully described by the United Nations Chief, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, takes many forms and impacts all aspects of life. \u201cMuch of today\u2019s racism is \u201cdeeply entrenched in centuries of colonialism and enslavement,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/03\/1087812\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> already two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Chief then painted a picture of \u201cpervasive discrimination and exclusion\u201d suffered by people of African descent, injustices and oppression endured by indigenous peoples, antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred \u2013 and the latest abhorrence of violence against people of Asian descent who are bring targeted unjustly for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>The \u201crepugnant\u201d views of white supremacists<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe also see it in the biases built into the codes for facial recognition and artificial intelligence\u201d as well as the \u201crepugnant views of white supremacists and other extremist groups\u201d, added the top UN Official.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, racism harms not just the lives of those who endure it but also society as a whole. It deepens mistrust, casting suspicion on all sides and tearing apart the social fabric, warns the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Impacts could include the ability to find a job, get an education, have equal access to healthcare, housing, food, water or get fair treatment in a court of law, explains the world body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all lose in a society characterised by discrimination, division, distrust, intolerance, and hate,\u201d as stated on the occasion of the 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/end-racism-day\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Contagious killers<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cLike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/coronavirus\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>, racism and xenophobia are contagious killers,\u201d the UN emphasises.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/background\/durban-declaration-and-programme-of-actio\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DDPA<\/a>) was adopted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/conferences\/racism\/durban2001\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Conference against Racism in Durban<\/a>, South Africa. As the UN\u2019s blueprint to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance globally.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/decade-people-african-descent\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024<\/a>, the implementation of the Durban Declaration should represent a top priority in the world\u2019s agenda. But is it?<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Hatred spreading everywhere<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Evidently it is not. Reality shows that the narratives of separatism, discrimination, division and fear and hatred of the other continue to be widespread in the streets, in schools, at work, in public transport; in the voting booth, on social media, at home and on the sports field.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, hate speech\u2019 <span id=\"m_3153892573400441843m_4328875030639686415m_2060132439503293892m_385607853943220144m_6837239321638544559gmail-docs-internal-guid-75c92c92-7fff-b993-fef5-408fc4cd2759\"><span id=\"m_3153892573400441843m_4328875030639686415m_2060132439503293892m_385607853943220144m_6837239321638544559gmail-docs-internal-guid-90b44861-7fff-3d9b-7765-b63cd3f943f2\">scale and impact are now amplified by new communications technologies. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>The major victims<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/end-racism-day\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/a> lists the following communities among the major victims of abhorrent racism, discrimination and hatred:<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong><b><span id=\"m_-1694444022659520228gmail-docs-internal-guid-843d005c-7fff-c223-dfbf-b46ae9976627\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/people-of-african-descent\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People of African Descent<\/a> <\/span><\/b><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The descendants of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade or more recent migrants, frequently face racial discrimination and prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>Discriminatory structures and institutions, legacies of the injustices of enslavement and colonialism result in people of African descent being among the poorest and most marginalised groups in society who also face \u201calarmingly high rates of police violence, and racial profiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/people-of-african-descent\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People of African Descent<\/a> and the descendants of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade, racism directly impacts the lives of many other communities and groups, including:<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/indigenous-peoples\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Peoples<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Systematically discriminated against, robbed of their basic rights, lands and cultures, there are nowadays over 476 million indigenous people living in 90 countries across the world, accounting for 6.2% of the global population.<\/p>\n<p>Of those, there are more than 5.000 distinct groups. Indigenous people speak an overwhelming majority of the world\u2019s estimated 7.000 languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNevertheless, they are nearly three times as likely to be living in extreme poverty compared to their non-indigenous counterparts.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/migrants\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Migrants<\/a>, r<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/refugees-asylum-seekers-internally-displaced\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">efugees, asylum-seekers, Internally Displaced People<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>There were 82.4 million people forcibly displaced world-wide at the end of 2020 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order.<\/p>\n<p>There are also millions of stateless people, who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 82.4 million forcibly displaced: 26.4 million are refugees, around half of whom are under the age of 18; 20.7 million refugees under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNHCR<\/a>\u2018s mandate, and 5.7 million Palestine refugees under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNRWA<\/a>\u2018s mandate.<\/p>\n<p>There were also 48 million internally displaced people, 4.1 million asylum seekers, and 3.9 million Venezuelans displaced abroad (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/figures-at-a-glance.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNHCR<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/people-living-in-poverty\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People Living in Extreme Poverty<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Its manifestations include \u201chunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, as well as the lack of participation in decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poverty \u2014 a cause and a product of human rights violations<\/p>\n<p>Many people who live in extreme poverty are often also victims of racial discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/conferences\/racism\/durban2001\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Conference against Racism in Durban<\/a> emphasised that poverty, underdevelopment, marginalisation, social exclusion and economic disparities are closely associated with racism, and contribute to the persistence of racist attitudes and practices, which in turn, generate more poverty.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>A vicious circle<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The UN often refers to poverty as a \u2019vicious circle,\u2019 made up of a wide range of factors, which are interlinked and hard to overcome. Deprivation of resources, capability and opportunities makes it impossible for anyone to satisfy the most basic human needs or to enjoy human rights.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/fight-racism\/vulnerable-groups\/women\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Racial discrimination does not affect all members of victim groups in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, being the entire half of the world population, women and girls are often among the most vulnerable members of society, and are at greater risk of economic hardship, exclusion and violence; discrimination against them is often compounded.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/Documents\/Publications\/Durban_text_en.pdf\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Durban Declaration and Programme of Action<\/a> focused attention on the issue of multiple, or aggravated, forms of discrimination, which are most significantly experienced by female members of discriminated groups, but which are also suffered by persons with disabilities, persons affected by HIV\/AIDS, children and the elderly, among others.<\/p>\n<p>These are often among the most vulnerable members of society, and are at greater risk of economic hardship, exclusion and violence; discrimination against them is often compounded.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/holocaustremembrance\/observance\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anti-Semitism <\/a><\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/anti-islamophobia-day\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Islamophobia<\/a><\/strong> subject members of these religious communities to discrimination and violent movements based on racism and discriminatory ideas.<\/p>\n<p>There are many other groups and many more millions of human beings who every day, every minute, fall prey to racism, discrimination, hatred, and the consequence of shocking inequalities that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2022\/02\/inequality-kills-one-person-every-four-seconds\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kill one person every four seconds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why don\u2019t you take a look at what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/about-us\/universal-declaration-of-human-rights\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a> says?<\/p>\n<p><em>_____________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/baher-kamal-e1508574091525.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-100598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/baher-kamal-e1508574091525.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a> Baher Kamal, <\/em><em>a member of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment<\/a><em>, <\/em><em>is an Egyptian-born, Spanish national, secular journalist, with over 45 years of professional experience \u2014 from reporter to special envoy to chief editor of national dailies and an international news agency.
