{"id":2328,"date":"2009-05-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wordpress\/2009\/05\/400-weeks-ago-today-on-september-12-200l%e2%80%a6\/"},"modified":"2009-05-15T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-15T00:00:00","slug":"400-weeks-ago-today-on-september-12-200l%e2%80%a6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2009\/05\/400-weeks-ago-today-on-september-12-200l%e2%80%a6\/","title":{"rendered":"400 WEEKS AGO TODAY, ON SEPTEMBER 12, 200l\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; we began our <em>HILO FRIDAY PEACE VIGIL<\/em>, with a new leaflet prepared each week for local and international circulation.&nbsp; Four hundred leaflets later, the five points at the bottom of the page remain the same.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hilo Peace Vigil leaflet (May l5, 2009 &#8211; 400th week) &#8211; Friday 3:30-5:00 p.m. downtown Hilo Post Office<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Following the terrible loss of life on 9-ll &#8212; and expecting a knee-jerk reaction that would call for revenge even before we learned who was allegedly behind the attacks &#8212; we chose &quot;RESTRAINT &#8230; NOT VENGEANCE&quot; as our vigil theme.&nbsp; We were mindful of Gandhi&#8217;s admonition that &quot;an eye-for-an-eye will only make the whole world blind.&quot;&nbsp; The past 400 weeks of escalating war in Afghanistan, Iraq &#8212; and now Pakistan &#8212; have resulted in a nation and world gone blind with violent retaliation.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The fallout from our blindness has been staggering: thousands of Americans killed, tens of thousands wounded, far more killed and injured than the casualties of 9-ll. Millions of people in Afghanistan and Iraq have been killed, wounded and\/or displaced from their homes.&nbsp; In addition to the shattered lives in a growing number of countries, billions of dollars that might have been used for peaceful purposes have been squandered in pursuit of conquest and destruction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When will the escalating violence and killing stop?&nbsp; Help us end the wars and occupations and the reasons for this vigil.&nbsp; Almost eight years of continuous war should be more than enough time to teach us that war is not a solution to anything.&nbsp; Let us today rededicate our lives toward building a world of lasting peace on a foundation of justice among all nations and peoples.<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><em><strong>NEVER GIVE UP&#8230;.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; RESIST!<\/strong><\/em><br \/><em><strong>STOP THE WARS!&nbsp; END U.S. OCCUPATIONS!<\/strong><\/em><br \/><em><strong>BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1.&nbsp; Mourn all victims of violence. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>2. Reject war as a solution. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>3. Defend civil liberties. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, etc. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>5.
