They originated in South India during the tenth century, a time of social upheaval, and took the side of poor against the rich, of spontaneous free expression against established orthodoxy, of passion against propriety. Hathaway<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Holding my kite, I run \u2018til I\u2019ve stirred a breeze,<br \/>\nthen swing my arm, toss the kite, give it string.<br \/>\nIt lofts into the air, catches a gust and soars.<br \/>\nI laugh in glee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Holding the tiller, I steer my boat to open water<br \/>\nwhere the wind lives.<br \/>\nI rev the motor, shut it off, hoist the sail.<br \/>\nThe canvas flaps listlessly \u2018til I swing the boom,<br \/>\nthen it catches wind and swells taut.<br \/>\nThe boat surges forward, slapping and skimming the waves.<br \/>\nI shout exultant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a050<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Kite and boat no longer needed,<br \/>\nI fly by the grace of Guru Dev.<br \/>\nHis forcefield flows above me,<br \/>\nand I stretch up to reach it \u2013<br \/>\nmeditation, asanas, devotion.<br \/>\nWith a leap of faith<br \/>\nI vault into the flow<br \/>\nand don\u2019t fall.<br \/>\nHe holds me aloft,<br \/>\nfills me with divine prana,<br \/>\nand sends me flying exalted through the heavens.<br \/>\nLeaving behind gravity, the grave and the crave,<br \/>\nhis Zepher Express sails me all the way to Shiva.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Depths &#8211; <\/strong>by William T.
