The military arrested him, and he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, without due process.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2022\/12\/14\/coup-us-ambassador-peru-cia\/\" >US ambassador in Peru, Lisa Kenna, is a CIA veteran<\/a> who strongly supported the coup against Castillo, and has collaborated closely with Boluarte.<\/p>\n<p>Boluarte\u2019s heavily militarized regime has violently cracked down on widespread demonstrations, killing more than 60 protesters.<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream think tank the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iep.org.pe\/\" >Institute of Peruvian Studies<\/a> (IEP) has conducted regular opinion surveys.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iep.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Informe-IEP-OP-Marzo-2023.pdf\" >IEP\u2019s March poll<\/a> showed that the unelected coup regime is extremely unpopular among all parts of society.<\/p>\n<p>In January, February, and March, Peru\u2019s congress had 89%, 90%, and 91% disapproval ratings, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10163\" src=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Congress-approval-rating-poll-1024x410.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Congress-approval-rating-poll-1024x410.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Congress-approval-rating-poll-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Congress-approval-rating-poll-768x307.jpg 768w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Congress-approval-rating-poll.jpg 1442w\" alt=\"Peru Congress approval rating poll\" width=\"880\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The IEP study found no differences between urban and rural areas; in every part of the country, on average, at least 90% of Peruvians oppose the congress, while just 6% support it.<\/p>\n<p>Peru\u2019s unicameral congress is notoriously corrupt, and dominated by the country\u2019s right-wing oligarchs. Recent controversies like the 2018 Mamanivideos scandal exposed how common it is for members of congress to accept bribes to vote in a particular way.<\/p>\n<p>Among Peruvians who identify as left wing, only 4% support the congress and 93% oppose it, whereas among right-wingers, 10% support the congress and 88% oppose it.<\/p>\n<p>Peru\u2019s unelected president, Boluarte, faced 76%, 77%, and 78% disapproval in January, February, and March, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10164\" src=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dina-Boluarte-approval-Peru-poll-1024x434.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dina-Boluarte-approval-Peru-poll-1024x434.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dina-Boluarte-approval-Peru-poll-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dina-Boluarte-approval-Peru-poll-768x325.jpg 768w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dina-Boluarte-approval-Peru-poll.jpg 1318w\" alt=\"Dina Boluarte approval Peru poll\" width=\"880\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Boluarte has slightly more support among Peruvians in the capital Lima, who tend to be much wealthier. But even in the Lima metropolitan area, she still only has 18% support, with 72% disapproval.<\/p>\n<p>In other cities in Peru, Boluarte has 14% support and 80% disapproval. In rural areas, she has mere 11% support and 81% disapproval.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, although some of the very few people who back Boluarte have cynically exploited feminist rhetoric to justify her unelected rule, the same study found that only 11% of women support her, while 79% of women oppose her.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Boluarte is slightly more popular among men, although just 18% support her, while 76% of men oppose her.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10162\" src=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Boluarte-approval-poll-1024x407.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Boluarte-approval-poll-1024x407.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Boluarte-approval-poll-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Boluarte-approval-poll-768x305.jpg 768w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Peru-Boluarte-approval-poll.jpg 1410w\" alt=\"Peru Boluarte approval poll\" width=\"880\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Institute for Peruvian Studies think tank that conducted this survey is in no way sympathetic to Castillo. In fact, it had been quite antagonistic to him when he was in power.<\/p>\n<p>The Lima-based organization represents the country\u2019s economic elites. Ironically, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iep.org.pe\/quienes-somos\/financiamiento\/\" >IEP is funded<\/a> by many of the same Western governments and CIA-linked organizations that have supported the coup, including the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), British embassy, World Bank, Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the sources of its finances, IEP\u2019s polling could not ignore the reality of Peru, which is that opposition to the unelected coup regime is so widespread it is nearly universal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7736\" src=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup-1024x576.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/map-Latin-America-Pedro-Castillo-Peru-coup.jpg 1920w\" alt=\"map Latin America Pedro Castillo Peru coup\" width=\"880\" height=\"495\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Latin America condemns the coup against Castillo, while US, Canada, and foreign mining corporations support it<\/h3>\n<p>At least <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2022\/12\/20\/latin-america-rejects-coup-peru\/\" >14 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have condemned the coup in Peru<\/a>, expressing support for President Castillo, including some of the most populous countries in the region, such as Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, despite the overwhelming lack of democratic legitimacy for Peru\u2019s coup regime, it has the full backing of the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>A day before Castillo was overthrown, in fact, CIA agent turned US Ambassador Lisa Kenna met with Peru\u2019s defense minister, who ordered the military to disobey Castillo\u2019s orders when the democratically elected president cited <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.congreso.gob.pe\/sicr\/RelatAgenda\/constitucion.nsf\/NumArticulos\/134?openDocument\" >article 134 of Peru\u2019s constitution<\/a> to temporarily dissolve the coup-plotting congress and hold new elections and a constituent assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo wanted to organize a democratic process to rewrite Peru\u2019s constitution, which was drafted by the far-right <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2023\/01\/24\/bush-dictator-fujimori-peru\/\" >US-backed dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori<\/a>. The United States had a significant influence on the creation of Peru\u2019s current, Fujimorista constitution, which incorporated neoliberal economic policies into the country\u2019s legal fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Today,\u00a0US, Canadian, Swiss, and Australia corporations have significant mining interests in Peru, and great influence over the country\u2019s politics.<\/p>\n<p>Since the parliamentary putsch, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2023\/01\/19\/peru-resources-mining-gas-investment\/\" >US ambassador has met with Peru\u2019s mining and energy ministers<\/a> to discuss foreign corporate \u201cinvestments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo had proposed increasing taxation on foreign mining corporations, and wanted to use the proceeds to fund healthcare, education, and social programs.
