In reality, Mayan elders say something <em>very different<\/em> from what you might have heard.<\/p>\n<p>For example,\u00a0Wakatel Utiw \u2013 leader of the National Council of Elders Mayas, Xinca and Garifuna (the Xinca and Garifuna are non-Mayan tribes in Central America), Day Keeper of the Mayan Calendar, and 13th generation Quiche Mayan Spiritual Leader &#8211;\u00a0 says that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/2012-not-end-world-say-maya-elders-285191\" title=\"the end of the Maya calendar has nothing to do with the end of the world\"  target=\"_blank\">the end of the Maya calendar has nothing to do with the end of the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also explains that December 21, 2012 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiftoftheages.com\/maya-message-2012\" title=\"might not even be the end of this cycle of the calendar\"  target=\"_blank\">might not even be the end of this cycle of the calendar<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief the living elders of the Maya do not agree that December 21, 2012 is the end of their calendar. A new \u201cSun\u201d represents the beginning of a new Long Count cycle in the calendar system of approximately 5,200 years, which they say may not happen for many years.<\/p>\n<p>And see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UJfJqct5AGI\" title=\"this\"  target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(A brand new film called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiftoftheages.com\/\" title=\"\u201cShift of the Ages\u201d\"  target=\"_blank\">\u201cShift of the Ages\u201d<\/a> tells the Mayans\u2019 beliefs in detail \u2026 and gives their true warnings.)<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Tz\u2019utujil Mayan elder Tata Pedro Cruz says that the world will <em>not<\/em> end in 2012:<\/p>\n<p>Mayan elder and priest Carlos Barrios \u2013 who has extensively studied the Mayan calendars \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indigenous.youth-leader.org\/?p=3712\" title=\"says\"  target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Anthropologists visit the temple sites and read the inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It\u2019s just their imagination. Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonzo Barreno \u2013 a Guatemalan native who was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/offbeat\/story\/2011\/12\/29\/sk-mayan-calendar-1229.html\" title=\"trained by Mayan elders\"  target=\"_blank\">trained by Mayan elders<\/a> to read the ancient calendars \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2080941\/Mayan-calendar-December-21-2012-wont-end-world-says-Leonzo-Barreno.html\" title=\"says\"  target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> says the \u2018apocalypse\u2019 concept is a false interpretation of the Long Count calendar, that the Mayan elders taught him that December 21 this year simply marks the start of a new calendar:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There are two sides to the story,\u2019 he told CBC. \u2018The one that we know is this apocalyptic meaning that has been given to the Long Count.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The other side of the story is the Mayan side, which you rarely see on media articles, because they never interview my own people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For them it\u2019s a joyous event, not an apocalyptic event. What is coming is the end of a calendar and the beginning of a new one.<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo Cajas \u2013 president of the Collective of Native Organizations of Colectivo de Organizaciones Ind\u00edgenas de Guatemala \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/prensalibre.com\/noticias\/controversia-detras-profecia_0_191380911.html\" title=\"said\"  target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the date did <em>not<\/em> represent an end of humanity or fulfillment of the catastrophic prophecies, but that the new cycle \u201csupposes changes in human consciousness.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http:\/\/prensalibre.com\/noticias\/controversia-detras-profecia_0_191380911.html\" title=\"Translation\"  target=\"_blank\">Translation<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Pedro Celestino Yac Noj \u2013 a Mayan sage living in Cuba \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/northamerica\/usa\/9730618\/Mayan-apocalypse-panic-spreads-as-December-21-nears.html\" title=\"says\"  target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The 21st is for giving thanks and gratitude and the 22nd welcomes the new cycle, a new dawn.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than being the end of the world, Mayan priest Jose Manrique Esquive <a href=\"http:\/\/intercontinentalcry.org\/maya-banned-from-performing-ceremonies-at-ancestral-temples-in-mexico\/\" title=\"believes\"  target=\"_blank\">believes<\/a> that 2012 may bring a transition to a <em>better<\/em> time for humankind.<\/p>\n<p>And AP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2009\/10\/12\/ap\/strange\/main5378465.shtml\" title=\"noted\"  target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> in 2009:<\/p>\n<p>Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly \u201crunning out\u201d on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it\u2019s not the end of the world.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Definitely not, the Mayan Indian elder insists.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Chile Pixtun, a Guatemalan, says <strong>the doomsday theories spring from Western, not Mayan ideas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And if you don\u2019t believe what the current Mayan leaders say, please remember that archaeologists recently found a cache of ancient Mayan calendars which goes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2012\/05\/archeologists-discover-mayan-hieroglyphs-showing-the-world-continuing-for-thousands-of-years-past-2012.html\" title=\"thousands of years past 2012\" >thousands of years <em>past<\/em> 2012<\/a>. And see <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2012\/01\/no-mayan-apocalypse-in-2012-but-theres-alot-of-other-amazing-stuff-happening.html\" title=\"this\" >this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: The Mayan elders do make prophetic warnings, but it has nothing to do with 2012.
