Their dispossession from ancestral lands, and the militarization of their territories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said they had described the negative impact of the climate crisis on their communities and \u201cthe scope of systemic discrimination and exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that these violations must stop\u201d, he told the meeting.<\/p>\n<h2>Poverty imbalance<\/h2>\n<p>The UN rights chief noted that Indigenous Peoples make up just over six per cent of the world\u2019s population but account for almost a fifth of the world\u2019s poor, according to the International Labour Organization (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\" >ILO<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Indigenous Peoples are among first &amp; worst affected by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ClimateCrisis?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#ClimateCrisis<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And yet with tremendous resilience drawn from generations of wisdom, they survive &amp; thrive<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time they lead the way as indispensable partners to resolve our\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TriplePlanetary?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#TriplePlanetary<\/a>\u00a0crisis &amp; its human rights harms <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rTv3Ft2Not\" >pic.twitter.com\/rTv3Ft2Not<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Volker T\u00fcrk (@volker_turk) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/volker_turk\/status\/1680970619448442880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >July 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He insisted their voices need to be heard \u201cin every relevant national, regional and global conversation\u201d and stressed the need to protect Indigenous human rights defenders from violence and reprisals.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. T\u00fcrk recalled the \u201cprofoundly moving\u201d story of survival by four Huitoto children whose mother died when they were all in a plane crash in the Colombian rainforest last month. They were found alive after 40 days, including a one-year-old baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe older children were able to hark back to the lessons of their mother and grandmother. They knew it was possible to understand the rainforest and to co-exist with its animals and plants, despite the risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said Indigenous people were most likely to carry the chain of culture forward: \u201cWe see this very clearly in the context of climate change\u201d, with its unequal impact, often leaving those closest to the land, to experience the worst effects.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_239613\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/indigenous-peru-un-human-rights.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-239613\" class=\"wp-image-239613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/indigenous-peru-un-human-rights-1024x464.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/indigenous-peru-un-human-rights-1024x464.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/indigenous-peru-un-human-rights-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/indigenous-peru-un-human-rights-768x348.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/indigenous-peru-un-human-rights.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-239613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indigenous communities in Peru are growing organic coffee to boost their livelihoods.<br \/>\u00a9 UNDP Peru<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is especially true for Indigenous women, he reminded, hit disproportionately by \u201cclimate damage and the unprincipled development of megaprojects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meeting 45 Indigenous leaders from 30 countries just last week, the rights chief said climate change was referenced often. \u201cAs the ice melts, our culture and the way of living dies\u201d, one participant from Greenland told him.<\/p>\n<p>He said he hoped there would be increasing opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to participate at the UN, including in the Geneva-based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/Home.aspx\" >Human Rights Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you have a right to make your voices heard.
