In 1931he became a member of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_party\" title=\"Nazi party\" >Nazi party<\/a> and a sponsoring member (&#8220;F\u00f6rderndes Mitglied&#8221;) of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schutzstaffel\" title=\"Schutzstaffel\" >Schutzstaffel<\/a> (SS). He later stated himself that he had joined the party because of their promise to end unemployment and because he felt &#8220;temporarily&#8221; withdrawn from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lutheran\" title=\"Lutheran\" >Lutheran<\/a> church. He joined the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_Labour_Front\" title=\"German Labour Front\" >German Labour Front<\/a> in 1936, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reichsluftschutzbund\" title=\"Reichsluftschutzbund\" >Reich Air Protection Association<\/a> in 1939, and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Socialist_People%27s_Welfare\" title=\"National Socialist People's Welfare\" >National Socialist People&#8217;s Welfare<\/a> in 1941.
