Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said: \u201cWe don\u2019t have to wait for the end of the month to know this. Short of a mini-Ice Age over the next days, July 2023 will shatter records across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll this is entirely consistent with predictions and repeated warnings,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe only surprise is the speed of the change. Climate change is here, it is terrifying, and it is just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe era of global warming has ended and the era of global boiling has arrived,\u201d Guterres asserted. \u201cHumanity is in the hot seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor vast parts of North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe, it is a cruel summer. For the entire planet, it is a disaster,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd for scientists, it is unequivocal\u2014humans are to blame.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">July 2023 is set to be the hottest month ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The consequences are tragic:<\/p>\n<p>Children swept away by monsoon rains.<\/p>\n<p>Families running from the flames.<\/p>\n<p>Workers collapsing in scorching heat.<\/p>\n<p>No more hesitancy or excuses.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ClimateAction?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#ClimateAction<\/a> &#8211; now.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yQhWo26Uom\" >https:\/\/t.co\/yQhWo26Uom<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ant\u00f3nio Guterres (@antonioguterres) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1684561167245795328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >July 27, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Petteri Taalas, who heads the U.N.\u2019s World Meteorological Organization (WMO), <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/press-release\/july-2023-set-be-hottest-month-record\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that \u201cthe extreme weather which has affected many millions of people in July is unfortunately the harsh reality of climate change and a foretaste of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is more urgent than ever before,\u201d Taalas added. \u201cClimate action is not a luxury but a must.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exacerbating the crisis, the WMO and C3S said that \u201ccontributing to the exceptionally warm July for the globe as a whole is a long period of unusually high sea surface temperatures\u201d dating back to April.<\/p>\n<p>Underscoring the severity of the situation, scientists were stunned this week by what may be the highest ocean temperature ever recorded on Earth as a thermometer buoy in Florida\u2019s Manatee Bay near Key Largo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/florida-ocean-temperature\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registered<\/a> a surface reading of 101.1\u00b0F, or 38.4\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ocean-temperatures-environ-global-warm-climate.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-240632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ocean-temperatures-environ-global-warm-climate.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ocean-temperatures-environ-global-warm-climate.webp 680w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ocean-temperatures-environ-global-warm-climate-300x195.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climate scientists around the world expressed alarm over the temperature records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarring a major asteroid impact today, it is virtually certain that July 2023 will be the warmest month on record by a large margin,\u201d Zeke Hausfeather of the California-based nonprofit Berkeley Earth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2023\/jul\/27\/scientists-july-world-hottest-month-record-climate-temperatures\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a><em>The Guardian<\/em>. \u201cI personally find the magnitude of this record a bit stunning. We don\u2019t see anything analogous in the historical record for the month of July.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University of Arizona climate scientist Katharine Jacobs <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hottest-record-climate-change-july-65e13c9c3d88932b50de935c7977ee70\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a><em>The Associated Press<\/em> that \u201cevents like this are signposts along a highway we don\u2019t want to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time to stop playing political games and get serious in order to protect ourselves and future generations,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Guterres reiterated a call for world leaders\u2014especially those from the rich nations most responsible for creating the planetary emergency\u2014to \u201cstep up for climate action and climate justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more greenwashing,\u201d he said. \u201cNo more deception. We can still stop the worst.
