Baby Boomers and older will remember it fondly.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>6 Aug 2023 &#8211;<\/em> On August 2, Code Pink gathered before the State Department to demand they \u201cFree Assange.\u201d \u00a0Thinking that a superior resolution to Julian&#8217;s nightmare would be sending him back to his native country Australia, the chorus to \u201cHello Muddah, Hello Faddah\u201d kept popping in my head. I kept singing \u201cSend him home\u201d in my mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-241092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange-1024x463.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange-1024x463.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange-300x136.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange-768x347.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange.webp 1319w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was curious about the urge to extradite him to the US, where he is <em>not <\/em>a citizen, for more harsh punishment. Anticipating extradition, activists are discussing plans for massive protests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange2.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-241094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange2-1024x832.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange2-1024x832.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange2-300x244.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange2-768x624.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/assange2.webp 1243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It occurred to me that \u201cSend Julian Home\u201d is a stronger message than \u201cFree Assange.\u201d It is less provocative, more specific, and is constructive. It doesn\u2019t require one to like or agree with him.<\/p>\n<p>The song below came to me. Below it are some facts about Julian.<\/p>\n<p>Its words embody the principles of creative problem solving and conflict transformation. I believe that sending Julian home is the best-case scenario:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It offers a resolution to an ongoing conflict, an end to his suffering and prevents escalation of more conflict.<\/li>\n<li>It allows a graceful way out of this painful episode and doesn\u2019t back anyone into a corner<\/li>\n<li>It doesn\u2019t offend people who disagree with what he did.<\/li>\n<li>It warns of consequences of extradition, desired by some, which may not be worth the aggravation.<\/li>\n<li>It is as close to a win-win as I can imagine \u2013 but I welcome your ideas in the comments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SEND HIM HOME <\/strong>is to the tune of Allan Sherman\u2019s \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" Department please don\u2019t disregard this letter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Australian citizen Julian Assange is suffering in the UK&#8217;s Belmarsh Prison and fighting attempts to extradite him to the US.<\/li>\n<li>Australian Labor MP Julian Hill, a member of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/may\/09\/julian-assange-australian-mps-urge-us-ambassador-to-end-extradition-bid\"  rel=\"\">Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group<\/a>, asked the United States \u201cat the very least, take Julian Assange\u2019s health issues seriously and go into court in the United Kingdom and get him the hell out of a maximum security prison where he\u2019s at risk of dying without medical care if he has another stroke.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Caroline Kennedy, the US Ambassador to Australia, met with members of the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/may\/09\/julian-assange-australian-mps-urge-us-ambassador-to-end-extradition-bid\"  rel=\"\">Australian Photograph: Supplied by Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Liberal Australian MP Bridget Archer claimed that Assange had been \u201cincarcerated overseas for a protracted period of time.\u201d \u201cHe continues to suffer mentally and physically, as does his family, and the government should redouble their efforts to secure his release and return to Australia.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Penny Wong, Australian foreign affairs minister, stated that the Australian government had \u201cmade clear our view that Mr. Assange\u2019s case has dragged for too long, and our desire that it be brought to a conclusion.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Some Assange supporters see him accepting a plea deal as an achievable way to bring him back to Australia, where he could serve out a suspended sentence. Other supporters believe that he should not plead guilty and must fight the extradition.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/biden-doj-julian-assange-wikileaks-case-pressuring-journalists-1234782793\/\"  rel=\"\">Biden\u2019s DOJ is Pressuring Journalists to Help Build its Case Against Assange<\/a>. A coercive campaign to get journalists to testify against Assange is a threat to free media and First Amendment protections.<\/li>\n<li>The prosecution of Julian Assange is a threat to the freedom of the media. Law enforcement coercing journalists into aiding Assange&#8217;s prosecution is far worse<\/li>\n<li>In 2010, former Defense Secretary, Bob Gates, believed that the Wikileaks disclosures, while embarrassing to some, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/04\/12\/712659290\/how-much-did-wikileaks-damage-u-s-national-security\"  rel=\"\">did not cause serious harm to US National Security<\/a>. He said, &#8220;The fact is, governments deal with the United States because it&#8217;s in their interest. Not because they like us, not because they trust us and not because they believe we can keep secrets,&#8221; Gates said. &#8220;Is this embarrassing? Yes. Is it awkward? Yes. Consequences for U.S. foreign policy?
