{"id":241338,"date":"2023-08-14T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T11:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=241338"},"modified":"2023-08-09T05:11:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T04:11:47","slug":"nothing-new-in-new-gmos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2023\/08\/nothing-new-in-new-gmos\/","title":{"rendered":"Nothing New in New GMOs"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>A new report exposes the corporate interest behind the gene editing business.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>7 Aug 2023 &#8211; <\/em>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/navdanyainternational.org\/publications\/nothing-new-in-new-gmos\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new report by Navdanya International<\/a><\/strong> investigates the strategies of the agribusiness industry behind a new generation of GMOs, created through gene editing. On July 5, 2023, the European Commission released<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_23_3565\" > a proposal<\/a> to exclude a large part of organisms genetically modified through new genetic editing techniques, from existing GMO regulations that require traceability, labeling, and risk assessment for genetic engineering products.<\/p>\n<p>What is really at stake? Why is agribusiness investing billions in this sector and lobbying European politicians? Are \u201cNew GMOs\u201d really new and as safe as the industry claims or should an independent investigation be undertaken following the European precautionary principle? What will happen to the growing organic market and to our biodiversity after this irreversible choice? Is our food and seed sovereignty under threat?<\/p>\n<p>The Navdanya International report \u201cNothing New in New GMOs\u201d reveals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The so-called gene technologies are nothing more than second generation GMOs.<\/b> Policy makers and corporations are using terms like \u201cscience-driven policy\u201d, and \u201cscientifically-based technical decision making\u201d, which attempts to give a scientific and moral high ground to highly risky technologies, by elevating these technologies above nature, ecosystem functions and the purview of farmer\u2019s contributions. The advent of these new technologies are only<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.testbiotech.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Patents_on%20new%20GE.pdf\" \"> allowing companies to widen patentable material<\/a>. Biotech enthusiasts see this new economic sector as the panacea that could solve all our ecological, climate, biodiversity, health and economic crises.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schmidtfutures.com\/perspective\/biomade\/\" > Thanks to gene editing technology<\/a> they can now mobilize a previously inaccessible part of nature to produce economic output for their benefit.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limited and controlled lab-based data<\/b> is chosen as<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/SPG-Coalition-science-solutions.pdf\" > evidence of success and innovation<\/a> that are then proposed as solutions to global threats. Establishing all knowledge, except the industry-funded scientific knowledge, as irrelevant for the promotion of sustainable agriculture enables the industry to control the narrative of the \u201cright and appropriate\u201d solution.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lobby groups <\/b>have started to<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/publication\/protecting-consumers-by-reforming-food-labeling-regulations\/\" > move to change overall regulations on labeling<\/a> GMOs. Labels such as \u201cOrganic\u201d and \u201cGMO-free labeling\u201d would disappear in favor of \u2018healthy\u2019 or \u2018sustainable\u2019 labels, regardless of the process used to create the product. In the wake of several countries now having legislation to label the presence of GMO ingredients in foods, interest groups are seeking ways to by-pass or change these labels to better market their biotech products.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lack of traceability of gene edited organisms<\/b>, and the roping off of genetic material, puts into direct threat the survival of organic and agroecological agriculture, along with traditional and native agrodiversity. This represents a further attack on food sovereignty, understood as the fundamental right of peoples to healthy and safe food produced by ecological methods and to adequate information on the origin and production methods of food.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cross contamination<\/b> could be potentially unknown. Any genetic mayhem, or destruction that could happen due to an altered organism could quickly pass on to a wild or conventional counterpart. Leading to a domino effect of possible consequences.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The<\/b> <b>same narratives that were used in the 1990s for the imposition of the first generation of GMOs <\/b>are now being used to execute this deregulation<b>.<\/b> It is a series of false promises: the promise of increased climate sustainability, increased yield for greater food security, pest resistance, greater health and so on, that have all, with time, been proven completely false.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Considering the <b>devastating consequences <\/b>already caused by the industrial food system, pushed through the same false promises of food security, sustainability, and climate adaptation, there is little reason to believe this new era of gene edited organisms will be any different.<\/p>\n<p>Food systems are deeply intertwined with natural systems, as well as with culture and local economies. The attempt to erase the ways in which food is produced, is a play to erase the consequences of this industrial paradigm. In order to <b>maintain business as usual and not lose profit by allowing the real solutions to come to the forefront<\/b>, a new iteration of the same failed technologies are being pushed globally.<\/p>\n<p>New gene editing technologies continue to shift attention away from these real alternatives that can drive ecological regeneration. Now it is more important than ever to protect our food and seed sovereignty. To demand that our democratic governments actually listen to the will of the people, and <b>protect farmers and citizens from the risks of these new technologies, as well as hold corporations responsible <\/b>for the destruction they\u2019ve caused. Navdanya pioneered the\u00a0movement of <strong>seed saving and seed freedom<\/strong>, which began in response to\u00a0the crisis of erosion of agricultural\u00a0 biodiversity and introduction of GMOs and patents on seeds through intellectual property rights (IPRs) and so-called \u2018free trade\u2019 agreements. It aims at regaining the common good as a foundation for a renewed sense of community, solidarity and culture of peace.
