Putin of Russia and disadvantage Ukraine in a war of attrition. But Ukrainian commanders decided the pivot reduced casualties and preserved their frontline fighting force.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cAmerican officials say they fear that Ukraine has become casualty averse, one reason it has been cautious about pressing ahead with the counteroffensive. Almost any big push against dug-in Russian defenders protected by minefields would result in huge numbers of losses.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry, US officials \u201cfear\u201d that Ukraine is becoming \u201ccasualty averse\u201d? Because safer battlefield tactics that burn through a lot of ammunition don\u2019t chew through lives like charging through a minefield under heavy artillery fire?<\/p>\n<p>What are the Ukrainians supposed to be? Casualty amenable? If Ukraine was more casualty amenable, would it be more willing to throw young bodies into the gears of this proxy war that the US empire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/opinion\/russia-ukraine-us-invasion-paved-how\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">actively<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/the-war-in-ukraine-was-provoked-and-why-that-matters-if-we-want-peace\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provoked<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1686510247844904962.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed peace deals<\/a> to maintain?<\/p>\n<p>Something tells me that the US officials speaking to The New York Times about their \u201cfear\u201d of Ukrainian casualty aversiveness do not know what real fear is. Something tells me that if you marched these US officials through Russian minefields under constant fire from artillery and helicopter gunships, <em>then<\/em> they would understand fear.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What do they mean, &quot;fear&quot;? They worry that Ukraine cares too much about the lives of its people? As if the US has any right whatsoever to pronounce judgment on what an &quot;acceptable&quot; level of Ukrainian casualties is. They\u2019ve been decrying Ukrainian cowardice to the press under cover of anonymity, from behind the safety of their office desks.<\/p>\n<p>In an article published Thursday titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/GmW5m\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. intelligence says Ukraine will fail to meet offensive\u2019s key goal<\/a>,\u201d The Washington Post cited anonymous \u201cU.S. and Western officials\u201d to report that the massive losses Ukraine has been suffering in this counteroffensive had been \u201canticipated\u201d in war games ahead of time, but that they had \u201cenvisioned Kyiv accepting the casualties as the cost of piercing through Russia\u2019s main defensive line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same article quotes Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba telling critics of the counteroffensive to \u201cgo and join the foreign legion\u201d if they don\u2019t like the results so far, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s easy to say that you want everything to be faster when you are not there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an article published last month titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/NeUam\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Cluster Munitions Arrive in Ukraine, but Impact on Battlefield Remains Unclear<\/a>,\u201d The New York Times reported unnamed senior US officials had \u201cprivately expressed frustration\u201d that Ukrainian commanders \u201cfearing increased casualties among their ranks\u201d were switching to artillery barrages, \u201crather than sticking with the Western tactics and pressing harder to breach the Russian defenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t they come and do it themselves?\u201d a former Ukrainian defense minister told The New York Times in response to the American criticism.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NYT: &quot;Senior U.S. officials&quot; have &quot;privately expressed frustration&quot; that Ukraine&#39;s military, &quot;fearing increased casualties&quot;, is not &quot;pressing harder to breach the Russian defenses.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>So frustrating when the Ukrainians won&#39;t sacrifice their soldiers for our proxy war. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CL2qVi3Oxn\" >pic.twitter.com\/CL2qVi3Oxn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aaron Mat\u00e9 (@aaronjmate) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaronjmate\/status\/1681077948370001921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >July 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In an article last month titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/D6CQZ\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ukraine\u2019s Lack of Weaponry and Training Risks Stalemate in Fight With Russia<\/a>,\u201d The Wall Street Journal reported that unnamed western military officials \u201cknew Kyiv didn\u2019t have all the training or weapons\u201d needed to dislodge Russia, but that they had \u201choped Ukrainian courage and resourcefulness would carry the day\u201d anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t,\u201d Wall Street Journal added.<\/p>\n<p>In the same article, The Wall Street Journal cited a US Army War College professor named John Nagle admitting that the US itself would never attempt the kind of counteroffensive it\u2019s been pushing Ukrainians into attempting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica would never attempt to defeat a prepared defense without air superiority, but they [Ukrainians] don\u2019t have air superiority,\u201d Nagl said, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s impossible to overstate how important air superiority is for fighting a ground fight at a reasonable cost in casualties.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;While the U.S. still backs Ukraine\u2019s fight, the US official said, \u201cWe may have missed a window to push for earlier talks.\u201d&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, perhaps it wasn&#39;t such a brilliant idea to slam and discredit any talk about diplomacy earlier on&#8230;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Etw24amcKy\" >https:\/\/t.co\/Etw24amcKy<\/a> via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/politico?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@politico<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Trita Parsi (@tparsi) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tparsi\/status\/1692639089634296018?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >August 18, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>And now we\u2019re seeing reports in the mass media that US officials\u200a\u2014\u200astill under cover of anonymity of course\u200a\u2014\u200aare beginning to wonder if perhaps it might have been better to try to negotiate peace instead of launching this counteroffensive that they <a href=\"https:\/\/mate.substack.com\/p\/unlocked-us-admits-to-pushing-ukraine\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">knew was doomed<\/a> from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>In an article titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/national-security-daily\/2023\/08\/18\/milley-had-a-point-00111878\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milley had a point<\/a>,\u201d Politico cites multiple anonymous US officials saying that as \u201cthe realities of the counteroffensive are sinking in around Washington,\u201d empire managers are beginning to wonder if they should have heeded outgoing Joint Chiefs chair Mark Milley\u2019s suggestion back in November that it was a good time to consider peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may have missed a window to push for earlier talks,\u201d one anonymous official says, adding, \u201cMilley had a point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oops. Oops they made a little oopsie poopsie. Oh well, it\u2019s only Ukrainian lives.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine reading through all this as a Ukrainian, especially a Ukrainian who\u2019s lost a home or a loved one to this war. I imagine white hot tears pouring down my face. It could have been stopped in the early weeks of the conflict back when a tentative peace agreement had been struck. It could have been stopped back in November before this catastrophic counteroffensive.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t. The US had an agenda to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Pm2rU#selection-533.28-533.128\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lock Moscow into a costly military quagmire<\/a> with the goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/25\/politics\/biden-administration-russia-strategy\/index.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weakening Russia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaronjmate\/status\/1689731357511917569\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to this day<\/a> US officials <a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2022\/12\/28\/caitlin-johnstone-us-interests-in-unprovoked-war\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">openly boast<\/a> about all this war is doing to advance US interests. So they\u2019ve kept it going, using Ukrainian bodies as a giant sponge to soak up as many expensive military explosives as possible to drain Russian coffers while advancing US energy interests in Europe and keeping Moscow preoccupied while the empire orchestrates its next move against China.<\/p>\n<p>Last month The Washington Post\u2019s David Ignatius <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/bnBPy\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote an article<\/a> explaining why westerners shouldn\u2019t \u201cfeel gloomy\u201d about how things are going in Ukraine, writing the following about how much this war is doing to benefit US interests overseas:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cMeanwhile, for the United States and its NATO allies, these 18 months of war have been a strategic windfall, at relatively low cost (other than for the Ukrainians). The West\u2019s most reckless antagonist has been rocked. NATO has grown much stronger with the additions of Sweden and Finland. Germany has weaned itself from dependence on Russian energy and, in many ways, rediscovered its sense of values.
